Here’s the latest trailer for HBO’s new period drama Boardwalk Empire, which will air before Sunday’s season premiere of True Blood. Executive producer Martin Scorsese directed the pilot, and the show has the look and the feel of a classic gangster movie like The Godfather, Once Upon a Time In America, The Untouchables, and Scorese’s own Goodfellas. Written by The Sopranos scribe Terence Winter, Boardwalk Empire premieres in September. Also among the trailers before True Blood tonight – a preview of new drama Game of Thrones.

looks good
Yawn. How many times have we seen this story. The dialogue is awful – “how i do business” “show your face again” – did Terrence Winter watch every mob movie and steal the dialogue? It looks like every old mob movie ever made. Why would Scorsese direct this pilot? Of I forgot, he also directed Shutter Island. Money. No one cares about old school mob and their greasy hair. Do some reinvention of the genre like True Blood.
maybe some people are entertained watching old fasion gangster type flicks.but vampires and warewolves come on bro.
Boardwalk Empire, True Blood and Treme are putting HBO back on the map.
Looks beautifully shot, but boring and a bit self-important.
Couldn’t agree more. And I don’t buy Buscemi at all. Looks like another underperforming HBO series to me.
Boardwalk Empire looks great! True blood is hands down the best show on TV! HBO has the best shows!
Felt dull. Flat. Beautifully shot and designed. Are women only whores on the show?
now this i’m excited about!
Steve Buscemi is running Atlantic City? Umm… no.
I have a feeling this will be light on drama and heavy on Scorsesesque gangster talk:
“You tell Mickey the Mick that Frankie FourFinger said Philly Phil is coming to town and if he knows what’s good for him he’ll be here tonight with the money or you and your brother Sal are gonna wake up tomorrow morning saying, what’s that sound?, and it’ll be your goddamn skulls getting played like a couple of fucking maracas…”
Hmm
That was too funny. Even though uys been done yours made me laugh, after the first few words.
haha hilarious
Read the pilot script and it was awesome. Casting? Well, Buscemi’s creepy, but he’s not a “tough guy”. Sopranos proved this. Couldn’t imagine him in this role at all, but I’ll wait and see if a fine actor can prove me wrong.
And Marty – please, another gangster story? Yawn…
Why do the greats debase themselves on TV? (Except for Spielberg, he’s not great)
Very easy answer: They direct the pilot episode and if the show hits, they get a piece of the pie with every episode aired and then some. It is FAR more complicated than that, but that’s it in a nutshell. Ask Ridley Scott, etc.
indrid, i think you and i are the only ones who liked mothman prophecies …
Yawn, I respectfully disagree with you. The trailer makes Boardwalk Empire look like the Untouchables with Kevin Costner. It could be the next Sopranos or Mad Men, it looks that good. Boring? Not with Martin Scorsese directing and Terence Winter. I mean we’re a writer who wrote for The Sopranos.
Obviously a lot of work has gone into this, but THE PHONES are gonna be a problem. They’re using them like cellphones, and it looks weird. Buscemi rocks.
This will definitely be the next Sopranos and Mad Men.
$50 million for the damn pilot and this is the best trailer they can come up with? Something’s wrong with the show then…
This trailer feels like an off day in the cutting room. All the line readings feel the same. No stakes in the story. Women seem superfluous to the story telling. Lots of money to build sets though.
Boardwalk Empire will be the next Deadwood. It’ll win a ton of awards. The naysayers have it wrong.
Agreed, I was thinking it looked more like Deadwood than Sopranos. Which is a good thing in my book. I bet this show will be great.
Unfortunately, though, it’s not being written by Milch. The dialogue sounds awful.
Maybe it’s only outside the US, but the only thing I can see is:
We’re sorry this video is no longer available.
Can’t wait for this! Please keep Deadline’s coverage on this exciting new series coming.
Really want to see this. Except I fear the casting of Steve Buschemi is a mistake. Prefer to watch him in supporting roles. Doesn’t convey enough heart to make me want to tune i` They should have cast AGAINST type like, Jeff Bridges or Tim Robbins.
Remember what a revelation he was as a romantic lead, of all things, in Ghost World? Don’t count him out yet.
Love it, but have seen it many times before. Buscemi can do anything, but dunno….will definitely watch it…It will fill the Deadwood/Sopranos Void that’s been the black hole at HBO. Good luck.
@Carlton, it’s OBVIOUS. You have IDEAS. You’re GREAT. Please tell us MORE. About YOURSELF. Please please please. YOU rock! (as in “You moron”.)
chillax buckaroo. he was giving his opinion.
threatened much?
Don’t you just love the posters on here that are not so much “posting” as they are “pitching” for that ODA/OWA!
“You know what… I bet if I sound super smart some CE or VP will open a dialogue with me about their problem project then ask for a writing sample which will SURELY lead to a gig!!!
The poster gave their opinion, like nearly everybody here does. What’s your problem?
Carlton, don’t worry about casting Buschemi. They did the good job, they hired Buscemi.
All the money saved on lighting paid for the rare Jimi Hendrix 78′s, played on a victrola — yes?
I don’t think that’s Jimi, I think that’s The Dead Weather’s “60 Feet Tall”.
Deadwood won a ton of awards? What the Dead Wood award?
Trailer does it’s job of selling, I just don’t think the audience who watches True Blood will watch Boardwalk Empire. And man, sometimes I think the negative nancies on here are worse than the ones on AICN and CHUD. Looking at you, Peggy!
Actually, if this were like AICN everyone would think everything was GREAT and the BEST THAT EVER WAS OR WILL BE!
No, Deadwood also won the Inappropriate and Historically Inaccurate Bullshit Profanity Award given out by Merriam-Webster. Other than that, I can’t think of any major awards it won.
No, miners didn’t typically speak with those types of profanities in the 1870′s. However, David Milch used them to show what type of people were living in towns like Deadwood at the time. It’s a television show (and one of the best I’ve ever seen, easily). Oh, and Ian McShane won a Golden Globe, and the show took a couple Emmy’s a few years ago.
Boring? There is something fundamentally wrong with you if you think that looks boring. You are a person that is never pleased in your own life and as you read this, you come to the stark realization that I’m right and you should be on some sort of intense medication. WTF have you people ever done in your lives LOL?
You people do realize that Steve Buscemi was nominated twice for the Sopranos? Once for directing a 2001 episode and the other for his role in 2004. So, obviously the Emmys thought he was pretty good as a gangster. Besides, he’s perfect for the mob boss.
Looks neat…but It’s A Game of Thrones that’s gonna be the one to watch ( Were’s that trailer HBO!)
