The buzz has been “it’s not working” on this pic in recent weeks. Now Paramount, DreamWorks, and Spyglass have delayed Dinner For Schmucks originally scheduled for release on July 23 to July 30. UPDATE: An insider just told me the reasoning: “It looks like a much less competitive weekend. July 30 is Cats & Dogs 2 which is very young. Right now, July 16 and 23 are Inception, Sorcerer’s Apprentice, and Salt. July 30 used to be Meet The Fockers and Morning Glory which moved back to year end. This moved into that opening.”

It was a lousy title for a French comedy which also wasn’t so great.
Yeah, this movie looks like bullshit.. I don’t understand why they are doing this. no one will see it.
“It’s not working” buzz…what? It just been delayed a week. Look at “Wall Street…,” delayed a couple of months. No a big deal.
good idea- someone should be able to see this coming. in joke for people who dont get sleep. reminds me of cant stop the music
Eclipse and Grown Ups come out a full month before Schmucks.
It sucks. I saw a trailer a few weeks back. The audience was like, “What the fuck is that?”
the trailer and spots have no been impressive, though to be fair, I saw a spot last night that seemed better. No, i havent seen the original or read the script for the remake, but seemingly mean spirited french farces don’t scream box office hit!
I heard this did not test well at all and needed to be cut down a lot. Paul rudd has been in a lot Of good comedies and Steve carell is still great.
More like … “Movie For Schmucks”
Horrible trailer, just horrible. Saw it attached to Get Him ToThe Greek, and no reaction at all (except a whispered “what the fuck?” from behind me) from a large, ready to laugh audience. Bad sign.
Trailer for this looks awful. Love Paul Rudd, but Carrell looks way over the top and out of place here.I’m not expecting this to do well at all, i expect it to go the way of School for Scoundrels.
Hmm. Looks like by doing this “Dinner for Schmucks” will likely take a heavier hit in week #2 going up against direct competition “The Other Guys” on Aug 6.
Unsurprising — you wonder if they’re not going to try to tweak the film any more because it just looks SO bad. I’ve seen two different trailers which took entirely contrasting approaches to trying to sell the film — neither one of them was remotely funny.
Even with Rudd and Carell (who looks like he’s doing Michael Scott one more time), this one has “bomb” written all over it.
This movie looks AWFUL
Sometimes those comedies that people think “don’t work” end up being classics — it just takes a little while to catch on. They should officially call that phenomenon ‘The Office Space Effect’ or something. I haven’t heard or read any buzz on this but the trailers look really funny, I have to say.
Good. This movie should be moved back to never. It looks awful. Less competition for Salt though, which is good. Either way it is going to bomb.
I saw the trailer for this ahead of “greek” the other night and can’t for the life of me figure out why they deviated so much from the original french film.
Oh, that’s right – because “bigger, louder and more” = “funnier” in Hollywood.
Not a toothpick in sight.
I’ve seen 2 screenings of Schmucks and it’s funny. There are problems, but it still made me laugh outloud numerous times, and thats what i really want from a comedy. The original, it is not, but its one ill watch over and over on cable…i think they fixes they made were a dramatic improvement, and though the temptation was there, it was probably a wise move not to rename the movie Dinner at the Glickmans.
Dear Dreamworks and Paramount,
The reason it’s not working is because it’s impossible to tell what this movie is about by any trailer or TV ad I’ve seen. The trailer played in front of Get Him To The Greek and didn’t get one laugh — I just read a synopsis of the film and finally get it (sorta — still a ridiculous concept though). If you want people to understand what the film is, you’ve got to set up Paul Rudd’s character better and the reason behind the dinner and the hunt for a schmuck, otherwise it’s impossible to understand. You’ve got funny lines (like the Morgan Freeman line) but it comes out of context… my two cents. Good luck.
The entire plot is practically sold in the first trailer.
Not working? This has been the only movie I’ve been looking forward to this summer.
If this is the only movie you’ve been looking forward to this summer, then I feel sorry for you.
as a response to the original post of this being the only thing looking forward to…
Jay “point-and-shoot” Roach???? SHOCKER!!!
Making it look effortless is part of Jay’s great talent as a director. Joe DiMaggio made playing centerfield look effortless too.
I wouldn’t refer to this as the film being delayed, which generally implies the studio doesn’t believe in it and plans to reschedule it in a less competitive season. This is simply moving it from one summer date to just a week later. Would you consider a film “delayed” if it moved from a Wednesday opening to two days later?
Nikki, you are being spun. The only reason they announced Les Grossman today was to deflect attention away from Schmucks move, which is 100% because it is a mess. I work with them and know this is true. You beat up everyone but Paramount, just thought I’d try to level the field with the truth.
I feel like I’m taking crazy pills. This and KNIGHT AND DAY, to me, both look pretty good. Maybe even quite good. And I consider myself a pretty harsh critic.
Meanwhile, I look at the TWILIGHT “advertising” around LA and wince (though i realize the phenomenon is what it is, i’m just saying…does it have to look so Spencer Gifts-y?); i think the GROWN UPS trailer looks lazy and unfunny, even by the modest standards of such a film; SORCERER’S APPRENTICE feels like a movie hatched out of a “pick a Disney project to remake/fan film” contest; and I haven’t seen a major motion picture in the theater in 6 weeks, which has to be the longest I’ve ever gone without doing so.
But, never underestimate the power of crap, i guess…
Just because you consider yourself a harsh critic doesn’t mean that other so-called harsh critics have the same taste as you do and will share your opinions.
Now, I, myself, do not consider myself a harsh critic. I laugh at a lot of comedies, sophisticated and dumb, but the trailers for this have really put me off. And I like Carell, Rudd, Galifianakis, and Roach. In my honest opinion, this makes Grown Ups look watchable by comparison.
I saw this trailer today when I went to see “Splice.” I love Carell, but this looks like crap.
Rudd,Carrell & Zach Galinkfus (?),hey how could that FAIL? A long time ago, a movie was made with some top funny men called “1941″.
This movie makes you wonder how this crap gets greenlit. Who is running things over there? A group of 8 year olds would not have green lighted this crap.
