Paramount and Nickelodeon Pictures’ new date of release is now Thursday July 1st for the 3D and 2D versions of M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender. Insiders tell me, “Early tracking is very good. Especially with males. So the studio is moving up to get a head start on the holiday weekend.” Let’s also not forget that the Twilight Saga’s Eclipse will do huge business with women especially on its Wednesday opener. “And while the threequel will definitely win the weekend, the two movies can coexist,” one of my sources said.

I’m wondering if the day early will matter with this economy (?).
The question is when the hell is Adam Goodman gone?…
Paramount is a dump and not really even taken seriously anymore.
I was a HUGE Night fan up to SIGNS. Loved SIGNS; hated that Ron Howard’s daughter piece of shit I can’t muster the energy to actually name. I think history will reveal that Night was undone by a national rag’s Spielberg comparison.
I never miss a Shyamalan film but this one will be my first. I just don’t see him as an action fantasy director. Nothing in the trailer appeals to me or looks original at all. And for the love of god can they stop putting his name above the titles of his movies; it didn’t help with the last three films, so why would it with this one?
M. Night’s name is dirt at the moment and he needs a comeback hit, so he/the studio needs to take a cue from Woody Allen on Match Point or Spike Lee on Inside Man: don’t foreground your name, just market the film.
With that said, I still root for him so I hope the movie turns out well.

yeah he’s got Tyler Perry syndrome… just sounds dumb.
We’re supposed to believe this is tracking well?
I’ve heard from those who have seen it that this
should be the nail in the M.N.S. coffin.
Truly awful stuff.
If he wants to resuscitate his career he’ll go back and direct a small, modestly budgeted piece that has the resonance of The Sixth Sense. And one without a twist gimmick. But Shyamalan is too far gone for that. Agree with the above comment that he started thinking he was Spielberg reincarnated, that’s when the bloat and self-indulgence set in.
so glad they moved it up one day. i definetly had to work the holliday weekend…i am a huge fan of the cartoon
Night is talented and to deny that is foolish. Visually this looks stunning and thematically I think he was a great match to the material and he looks to have applied the earnestness require to evelate it to the big screen. How many studios and filmmakers would have just turned this into another martial arts one off?
Not looking forward to much the rest of the summer except this and Inception alongside Toy Story.
This movie’s selling point is not M. Night, but the tv show which has a huge tween following. Just ask your nieces or nephews. The main comparison to this movie is Big Trouble In Little China which has a huge following among kids today.
Finally, this adult is looking forward to seeing what M. Night can do with a project he didn’t write because let’s face it, the problem with his ouevre is that aside from The Sixth Sense his stories have always been disappointing. His direction and mastery of supense (a skill sorely lacking in today’s camera-tech obssessed directors) is unqiue.
The fact that M. Night keeps slathering his name all over these movies is disgusting… he is taking the work of Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino (almost shot for shot) and calling it his own.
This world was fully flushed out and created, characters given life, plot arcs masterfully written by Konietzko/DiMartino and their team. All M. Night is doing is trying to salvage his career by vampiring the animated series and putting his name everywhere as if he created anything in this world.
… sadly it is working.. everyone seems to think it’s an M. Knight creation…
He even has the audacity to say he wrote it (yes I’m sure he “wrote” the screenplay after cutting and pasting it from the animated scripts).
After I wasted 2 hours of my life ( and admission price) in 2008 to unintentionally laugh out loud at the disgraceful, lazy and stupid The Happening. I swore never again would I sit through an M. Night time waster.
Boy is this going to suck big time.
I feel bad for Night. While he’s got an ego the size of two Titanic’s, he’s still got talent. Hate him all you want, but the man knows how to visually tell a story. Detractors, try all you want, you can’t convince me otherwise. Go back, re-watch “Unbreakable” and/or “Signs” on mute and see for yourself. I won’t excuse “The Happening” (for more reasons that I can count) but playa please….no director has a spotless track record.
Obviously you have not seen the Nick series. To me this is THE “Avatar” movie which is the original name of the series. There is compelling story behind this movie. If Night is able to adapt it to the big screen. It’s going to be big.
Who ever made the comment about AG being gone I do agree but JL green lit this not AG.
Will it make money? Tough call, are the futures trading in play for this movie? I’d like to see where the numbers are then play it from there.
It’s a family film based on a popular cartoon. It will do surprisingly well at the box office, even if it doesn’t deserve to.
In response to the comment about M. Night stealing Konietzko and DiMartino’s work, Shyamalan is very forthright in all his interviews about working closely with those two. They’ve been present in every step of the process. I have a feeling his name being splashed everywhere is a result of producers trying to squeeze dollars off of him than his own ego.
It isn’t tracking well. The source is probably the studio. Twitter is the new barometer on what will hit or not and this movie is barely talked about. Moving it up a day won’t make it compete better with Eclipse. Eclipse is not even in 3D and it will open much bigger. The only winner out of this is Jackson Rathbone because he’s also in Eclipse. The studio head that gave M. Night $250 million to make this is an idiot. Did he not see The Happening? We already saw Kick Ass flop and it actually had buzz.
The movie is gonna be a hit.. no sweating here. And yes, it IS tracking well.. sorry to disappoint those who are hoping to see knight fail. He has the blessing of bryan and mike, and he’s an incredibly talented director, so i know it will be fantastic.. hell, it already looks fantastic! ;o)
