EXCLUSIVE: Starz has decided not to renew comedy series Party Down and Gravity. I hear the pay cable network may make the announcement later today. Both shows were developed and launched by Starz’s previous regime, but new president and CEO Chris Albrecht has stated
repeatedly that he is big fan of Party Down. While the off-beat comedy has become an instant cult classic, I hear at the end of the day its appeal was deemed not wide enough to keep the show beyond its recently concluded Season 2. Consider this: The Season 2 finale of Party Down and Season one close of Gravity last week drew a 0.0 rating in adults 18-49 each and total audiences of 74,000 and 54,000, respectively. That is miniscule even for pay cable standards. And the writing has been on the wall: some of the actors on Party Down have already taken other jobs, like Adam Scott, who recently joined NBC’s Parks & Recreation. Starz’s slate has evolved following the breakout success of period drama Spartacus. The pay cable network has focused on dramas with big, recognizable title like the upcoming series Camelot, Torchwood and the Spartacus prqeuel as well as limited series The Pillars of the Earth. Additionally, Starz is developing an U.S. version of the hit Australian mob drama Underbelly.
UPDATE 12PM: Stephan Shelanski, executive vp programming for Starz Entertainment, issued a statement confirming the cancellations. ”After careful consideration, we’ve decided not to continue on with subsequent seasons of Party Down and Gravity,” he said. ”Starz remains committed to aggressively expanding our original programming lineup.”
Party Down follows six actors and writers as they do their gigs and try for their first big break. The cast of the show, created and primarily written by John Enbom, Rob Thomas, Dan Etheridge and Paul Rudd, included Adam Scott, Ken Marino, Megan Mullally, Ryan Hansen, Martin Starr and Lizzy Caplan. Gravity focused on an out-patient program for suicide survivors and starred Krysten Ritter, Ivan Sergei and Ving Rhames.

Wish Party Down series finale would have gone out on a better note. Not one of their best episodes.
Agreed – it was great seeing Jane Lynch’s Constance character again, but the rest of it seemed a little weak. In the end, however, without Adam Scott’s character, the show shouldn’t exist. And that’s too bad, because I like his Party Down character far more than his Parks and Rec persona. In the end, if it’s gotta go, at least it was a really satisfying run.
I hate Adam Scott on Parks & Rec! I blame his and Rob Lowe’s characters on why Parks & Rec became a midseason replacement.
That’s kind of dumb, seeing as their characters had absolutely 0 to do with said decision.
Parks & Rec is mid-season because Amy Poehler is having a baby. Not for Tina Fey…this time. Sorry, couldn’t help it.
DAMN! Party Down is one of my favorites. Can we get a fan petition going or something. Executives like petitions right?
Let Starz know: http://www.twitter.com/starz_channel
god damn it.
That sucks. Party Down has some of the greatest comedic talent in Hollwood. Can’t wait to see what all these people do next, but this show will be missed.
I just caught up on the first season of Gravity and it sucks that we are left with such a cliff hanger. This show was vastly improving with every epsiode.
that is literally one of the dumbest moves ever.
“party down” is their only comedy that has ever gotten any attention for the network — a PAY cable channel that makes profit off of subscriptions/buzz. not to mention dvd sales (this is starz owned, right?) look at another example — the far less awesome, “entourage,” wasn’t built in a day. it had devastating ratings.
with a stronger, more creative marketing campaign “party down” dvds could have flown off the shelf. “spartacus” isn’t a big enough hit to carry that network alone… seems to me albrecht’s off to a poor start there.
I agree. I’m in the exact target audience for Party Down and I hadn’t even heard of it until last week. I caught an episode and liked it a lot; now it turns out that was the last episode. It’s a shame…seems like marketing could’ve done a better job letting people know it existed and waiting for the audience to build.
Such a great series that should be recognized as a classic in years to come. The Season 2 opener and Steve Gutenberg Episode are reason enough. The entire cast should go on to have amazing careers and can’t wait to see what they all do next.
Party Down was cancelled and for what? Some moronic costume drama? Chris Albrecht ought to go back to what he does best—sexually harassing his employees.
no, it was cancelled because NOBODY watched it. less than 100K people.
NO! Party Down and Gravity (especially Gravity) were just… great. Awesome TV. So… HBO/SHOWTIME… please swoop in and save the day?
dismal ratings = cancel. no surprise here. the party down finale had 74.000 viewers, and 0.1/0 rating, in 18-49 0.0/0
It’s obvious that the people who are watching this show don’t have a subscription to Starz, because they are not in the viewership totals.
Watching streamed versions of a show like Party Down doesn’t help it in the long run. Start watching tv if you want shows like this to last.
74 thousand viewers for a finale is pathetic.
That’s because they don’t know how to promote to the damned thing. It would have caught on. Whoever’s in charge of promotion should be kicked in the @$$.
I wish there was a “Like” button for this.
spartacus kicked ass in the ratings, so you’re wrong.
Spartacus had a huge ad campaign, including subway posters in many, many stations. I only ever saw one outdoor ad for Party Down.
Party Down is so good! WHyyyyyyyyyyyyy
The appeal of Party Down wasn’t “wide enough” simply because it airs on Starz. Period.
Everyone I know who watched it did so on Netflix or downloaded torrents. Shame, because it was a great show. Very well-written and acted.
Loved Party down. I watched it every week online. Season 1 was better.
Does anyone subscribe to Starz?
I think that’s the problem.
Here’s the ratings for the last episode
Party Down (10pm, 30 minutes)
- 0.074 million viewers
- 0.1/0 HH
- 0.0/0 A18-49
spartacus has over 1 million viewers
starz has, i think, 24 million subscribers
Ha-ha, that means the hack Rob Thomas is out of work again. I wounder which one of his or someone else’s old ideas he’ll try to regurgitate next… a dollar says he’ll reach out to Ausiello about lobbying for a “Veronica Mars” movie again within the next week.
Ari Greenburg, still upset that RT left you for UTA?
Hi Rob! Still getting off on reading televisionwithoutpity posts about your “genius?”
If enough people want to see it, write to Chris or to Starz. Reality, Chris, fired the person who put Starz ptv on the map, Bill Hamm, he found Spartacus . The guy better do something amazing for Starz… Starz is far from HBO. Get going Chris A, show us what you’ve got… But firing the guy who brought the ptv channel something amazing like Spartacus, was stupid. Love Corp mentality.
Really too bad. Party Down was on it’s way to becoming a classic comedy. Great cast, funny dialog. Will miss it. To the cast and crew–great job, guys. Top-notch comedy.
I love Krysten Ritter and hope she gets a WAY BETTER show and fast I need her weekly!!! Same with Lizzy Caplan and Adam Scott!!! Great actors on both shows and they should be on shows that actually get SEEN! Party Down is a fun show and Gravity was getting better and better every weekend and there was a pretty great season (well, series) finale. What a cliffhanger indeed!
Party Down was great and was just starting to get some traction from people like me who caught it on Netflix. Someone else needs to pick it up and break it big.
Starz is smart to stream all their shows on netflix. That’s how I watch Spartacus and Party Down. Wonder if they take these numbers into consideration.
I watched Party Down on Netflix too. What gives with Chris Albrecht and Starz?
Yo HBO, Part Down!
The ratings were indeed terrible — but it’s Starz, so what are we expecting?
But that’s not the real issue.
How about the old executives of STARZ signing the actors to 1-year deals??? THEY DIDN’T LOCK THEM UP, and that’s the real reason PARTY DOWN is going away. Ask anyone associated with the creation of the show, and they’ll tell you (privately) that the STARZ people screwed up. Of course the actors were going to sign onto bigger projects — PARTY DOWN reinvigorated the fantastic Lizzy Caplan and gave Adam Scott (already moving up fast) a weekly buzz. Jane Lynch was already out end of Season 1 due to GLEE and I bet even Ken Marino was going to grab something soon.
So Albrecht comes in and cleans house, as he should, but the only way to keep PARTY DOWN going was to recast nearly every role. For a show which has the best casting dept on TV (look at every small bit in that show – it’s genius casting), maybe they could have pulled it off, but it was too little, too late.
Blame the earlier STARZ execs for screwing this up, not Albrecht. You can just blame him for beating his girlfriend.
I LOVE Party Down. It doesnt get ratings because everyone watches it on demand or netflix/roku. The ratings system is antiquated-
has there ever been a funnier half hour of TV than Steven Weber playing the Russian mobster Ricky (season one, episode 8)?
Honestly, Steven Weber was hilarious, best role ever.
Arg! While Gravity deserves the axe, Party Down was just a killer comedy. It will be missed!
Citing the ratings as the only reason for cancellation seems like a cop-out to me. Pay cable stations don’t run strictly on ratings the way ad-supported networks do. Their business model is based on having a rotating series of great programming that continually urges people to subscribe. I got Starz strictly for Party Down season 2, and I bet a lot of those 74,000 viewers were in the same boat. If they kept the show on for another season, they could have grown their subscriber base, but having canceled it, they’ll have to rebuild it from scratch. Speaking personally, if Party Down is the type of show Albrecht *doesn’t* want on his network, I’m not very likely to tune in to whatever he decides *is* worthy.
Party Down was a great show. IT’s too bad it went off the air. But the numbers don’t lie. That’s pretty low. The ep. wasn’t the funniest, but it summed up the show nicely. It will live on on DVD. Plus, I’m sure TV GUide or G4 will pick it up. –hint, hint
One of the only reasons anyone has ever heard of Starz is that people talk about Party Down. It’s the only TV show I have ever watched all at once (courtesy of netflix) and I watched the second season religiously. I am really disappointed. I wish they had stuck with it.
