EXCLUSIVE: Starz has decided not to renew comedy series Party Down and Gravity. I hear the pay cable network may make the announcement later today. Both shows were developed and launched by Starz’s previous regime, but new president and CEO Chris Albrecht has stated
repeatedly that he is big fan of Party Down. While the off-beat comedy has become an instant cult classic, I hear at the end of the day its appeal was deemed not wide enough to keep the show beyond its recently concluded Season 2. Consider this: The Season 2 finale of Party Down and Season one close of Gravity last week drew a 0.0 rating in adults 18-49 each and total audiences of 74,000 and 54,000, respectively. That is miniscule even for pay cable standards. And the writing has been on the wall: some of the actors on Party Down have already taken other jobs, like Adam Scott, who recently joined NBC’s Parks & Recreation. Starz’s slate has evolved following the breakout success of period drama Spartacus. The pay cable network has focused on dramas with big, recognizable title like the upcoming series Camelot, Torchwood and the Spartacus prqeuel as well as limited series The Pillars of the Earth. Additionally, Starz is developing an U.S. version of the hit Australian mob drama Underbelly.
UPDATE 12PM: Stephan Shelanski, executive vp programming for Starz Entertainment, issued a statement confirming the cancellations. ”After careful consideration, we’ve decided not to continue on with subsequent seasons of Party Down and Gravity,” he said. ”Starz remains committed to aggressively expanding our original programming lineup.”
Party Down follows six actors and writers as they do their gigs and try for their first big break. The cast of the show, created and primarily written by John Enbom, Rob Thomas, Dan Etheridge and Paul Rudd, included Adam Scott, Ken Marino, Megan Mullally, Ryan Hansen, Martin Starr and Lizzy Caplan. Gravity focused on an out-patient program for suicide survivors and starred Krysten Ritter, Ivan Sergei and Ving Rhames.

This is just terrible..I watched the entire first and second seasons on Netflix a week ago and now they’re canceling it. Outstanding show, but with the absence of Adam Scott I really don’t know if a third season would be as strong as the first two seasons.
0.0 rating?
How about all the views on Starz play/Netflix? Starz was really on its way to quality original programing to populate an web-based platform, not just traditional pay cable. Its too bad they are canceling Party Down- one of the best shows out. Just like JWB, I watch online every week.
PARTY DOWN decision SUCKS! With such buzz and critical acclaim, they should renew and do some marketing and publicity to get the numbers up. When people see it, the friggin’ love it. It’s STARZ job to make this gem work. Look at Entourage.
Since when do ratings matter on pay stations anyway? The funny thing here is that the ONLY reason I even know about Starz is because of Party Down! Talk about throwing the baby out with the bathwater! I thought Albrecht was smarter than that. Guess not.
That was one of the most consistently entertaining comedies on cable.
If Starz was concerned with the ratings, then they should have promoted the show.
I’ll make sure to spread the word around the various screenwriter message boards.
Starz just blew any credibility they’d earned over the last couple of years. Can’t imagine
anyone pitching them anything of substance if this is the way they treat a great show
in need of some TLC.
Just sad news. Great show. Do Netflix Starz downloads count for anything? I don’t trust those ratings. Party Down is the cult comedy status The Ben Still Show always gets cred for being. If Hollywood doesn’t like this show it’s over. It was real cheap to make, funny, no huge starts to cater to. What’s the problem? It’s Starz not Party Down!
That’s just stupid. It’s not like “Party Down” was that expensive to make. And it’s on a channel no one gets. AND it wasn’t even promoted until half-way through it’s 2nd season, and that was probably in L.A. Only. It’s also clear they’re not paying attention to streaming on Netflix. Everyone I know who watches it gets it from there. It’s a shame they’re letting go of a show that could help define them in a new direction. If NBC can hold onto “Friday Night Lights”, I think they should try at least one more season. Seriously.
Starz is still a network?
Doesn’t help that 0.0 people 18-49 pay for their shit network. If they want success, Starz needs to stick it out with good shows, develop more so they have a larger catalog and therefore present a reason for people to purchase. Then they can begin to compare numbers. FX is building a larger film catalog in addition to amazing original programming and it’s FREE. Figure it out guys. You’re a high maintenance basic cable station. You’re the girl at the party who looks sexy from far away because you’re hanging out with HBO and Showtime, but when subscribers realize you have no substance and that you expect nice dinners and jewelry, they never call back. A bit thin I know, but you get the idea.
Wow Starz, Party Down is the only reason I’ve been keeping their crummy network. Sparticus is okay, but I can wait for DVD. Here’s a big hint Starz, when you put the season finale ON DEMAND a week or two before it airs, don’t be surprised when people don’t stay home to tune in on that Friday. It’s the curse, any genuinely funny program must be taken off the air b/c they reveal what pieces of crap the majority of other tv comedies are. Sorry it wasn’t 2.5 Men zany, guess they should have put in a laugh track so worthless pukes would know it was funny.
Party Down is a victim of its own quality. Season One was fantastic and so Jane Lynch is quickly scooped up by FOX. The character of Constance is one of the all-time comedy greats and replacing her with an idiotic Sarah Palin character (still love Megan Mullaly) was a really bad choice. Losing Adam Scott as well is a death blow, no way around it. Entourage has stayed strong on HBO since its star didn’t jump at offers to leave HBO but if FOX or NBC offers you good money to leave STARZ…
well that’s perfect. nbc should just cancel parks and rec already to make a trifecta of brilliant yet short-lived comedies (the third being the life and times of tim)
I’m one of the lucky ones that was browsing Netflix the day it was added and got into it early. I have spread it to over a dozen other people and I think that’s par for the course for other fans. I wish they had just moved it back. I wouldn’t mind a year and a half delay if it meant more episodes. In the meantime, they might have justified it’s continuation by DVD sales. That said, since it has likely wrapped up permanently, it was fun while it lasted.
Bet Lizzy Kaplan is regretting not taking that CBS/Sony deal for Mad Love now!
I was wondering about that… have they re-cast that role yet? I haven’t heard that yet…
You have no fucking idea what you’re talking about.
Great career move. Suck it, Lizzy Caplan!
yeah ’cause I’m sure Mad Love is the next Friends. I think Lizzy Caplan will be fine.
maybe Lizzy has other offers you don’t know about.
Party Down needed a network with a bigger viewership like HBO or Showtime. It would’ve easily found a home following something like Curb Your Enthusiasm or Flight of Conchords
HBO passed on it, which is how Starz got it in the first place.
I wasn’t implying that they ended up on Starz by choice. I’m saying HBO has the lineup/audience the show needed. Shame that the better network never gave them the chance they deserved.
Adam Scott though… that guy’s gonna be huge
They passed on it? No surprise there, can’t remember the last time I watched HBO for comedy, maybe the early seasons of Curb.
Eff you Starz! I’m cancelling my subscription. Party Down is one of the best comedies in years!
Oh STARZ… what are you doing??? As many people have stated already, you have a gem of a show in PARTY DOWN. The ratings may not be there yet and the contracts with the stars were ridiculous (1yr really?), but if there was ever a show that had legs – this one is it! Take a moment and see it’s capability, even if you took a year off and recasted it with stronger development – I promise you will have a show-runner on your hand that will give you 5-8 profitable seasons (at least) at half the production cost. Think about it! Otherwise, please remember the redonkulous decision of past ABC executives to kill a little show called MY SO CALLED LIFE – which turned out to be a huge mistake (lost them an entire viewership for years) and is still talked about today as one of the greatest blunders in TV history. Act like you got a pair and figure out a way to make this show happen. Thank you STARZ!
I have yet to encounter anyone who watched Party Down and didn’t become hooked on it.
The numbers may be small, but clearly people loved this show.
Someone needs to pick it up and help it find a larger audience.
HBO passed on it? Well, they need to wake up and realize they are sitting on a bomb (Entourage)
and pick up PARTY DOWN and re-assemble the full cast.
I hope the agents representing the show are checking out the outpouring of PARTY DOWN love in the Deadline comments today. Find a way to save this show, guys.
I would take Party Down over Entourage any day!
entourage has been on for 6-7 years and party down was lucky to have 2. i’d say HBO execs are sleeping nicely.
tv shows don’t go from one network to the next as often as you think.
Party Down is so fantastic, while Entourage is the worst show that I still watch.
Entourage blows nowadays. The only reason it floats is b/c of celebrity guest appearances and occasional nudity. Cast is still top-notch, the writing just went down the tube at some point.
And today is Lizzy Caplan’s birthday. Nothing like a day such as that to break such grreat news, yes? I feel bad for her the most. She turned down Mad Love out of loyalty for PD and now she’s got squat. And as Martin Starr’s Roman said, fuck Entourage. It’s an abortion of a series which was foisted on the American public once Albrecht turned down Rob Thomas’ pitch for PD. And that piece of shit HBO show keeps getting nominated for Emmys year in and out.
Don’t worry about Lizzy… the networks are gonna be throwing money at her and now she’s got some time for feature stuff.
Huge mistake to cancel Party Down….
Party Down is THE funniest show on TV…
The reason why people aren’t watching is because…IT DOESN’T GET ANY PROMOTION!!!
MAYBE NEVINS AT SHOWTIME??
This blows! I’m not having fun now!
“do you know how to pop a lock?”
best fucking moment on party down… i nearly pissed myself at that one!!!
DAMN! I loved Party Down…
What?! Party Down was hilarious! Funnier than most of the other comedies on tv right now…
