Credit the power of Betty White! TV Land’s first original series, sitcom Hot in Cleveland, drew 4.8 million viewers in its debut last night, making network history as TV Land’s highest-rated and most-watched telecast ever. For comparison, the premiere of another cable sitcom, TBS’ Are We There Yet?, drew 3.2 million viewers earlier this month. Hot in Cleveland, starring Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves, Wendie Malick and White posted a 1.9 rating and 2.0 million viewers in the network’s target adults 25-54 demographic. The multi-camera comedy is executive produced by Sean Hayes and Todd Milliner of Hazy Mills Prods. and creator/showrunner Suzanne Martin.

Perhaps Hollywood needs to grow up and realize target demos opts for solid entertainment over being pandered to…(cough) CW
Good for them. With that dreaded over-40 cast, I’m sure the big 3 broadcast networks passed on it, yet it got more viewers than “Community” or “Parks and Rec” (on basic cable!). The broadcast networks should spend less time trying to find hip shows (so they can feel hip themselves) and more time trying to find shows that people want to watch.
Hard to compare the two when ‘Hot in Cleveland’ aired in the summer with no real competition while ‘Community’ and ‘Parks’ both aired in prime-time against legitimate competition.
Community and Park and Recs ARE networks shows (NBC). That is where all the local network affiliates are put on cable line ups across the country. “Basic Cable” produces nothing.
I’m glad the numbers were high, but the show itself was pure drivel. I guess I got my hopes up, thinking this could be a re-imagining of my beloved Golden Girls, but the dialogue was flat, and the premise uninspired. Other then Betty White, there was no reason to tune in at all. If the high numbers continue next week, then you’ll have something to write an article about, but if most of those viewers shared my experience, I wouldn’t bet on it.
Great ratings for a show that has a lot of promise – I’ll definitely be tuning in again!
I really doubt this show can retain anything like the number of sample viewing they got last night. Four talented actresses can’t save a show that simply isn’t that funny.
I thought it was hilarious! I love all the actresses except Valerie Bertinelli. I’ve missed Jane Leeves and fell in love with her character. Wendie Malick’s character is just like Nina from Just Shoot Me. Which I simply love.
Loved it! Will hold it’s own against network “comedies” and the competition. I found many good laughs. Can’t bring back the Golden Girls and we need to let Betty move on no matter how much we loved Rose. My Minnesota hero!
Ummm it’s called a Pilot episode ..always is A little off..but it has great potential .. when this was filmed Betty white was just going to guest star in every other episode… I think she is going to be in all now
Okay, I wasn’t sure at first, but the scene in the dive bar TOTALLY had me. I think it’s a good show that could be much better. It just needs stronger, funnier writing and it could be a great show.
LOved the show!!! It will definitely get more & more viewers each week. My coworkers were sitting around talking about how hilarious it was & all admitted they’d watched it twice! All 4 actresses are great! Cheers to the over 50 girls!!! You rocked!
I thought it was hilarious. The scenes in the plane and the bar were so funny, my family was laughing like crazy. It’s that 80′s style of sitcom and I have always loved those. Can’t wait to watch it again. Also, Betty was great, but I really enjoyed the other girls just as much or more.
Love the show. Suzanne Martin is a wonderful writer. It’s going to be a huge hit. Congrats to her. I loved it.
I am a comedy actor and writer and have to say that I enjoyed seeing a comedy that just made me feel good. I admire TV Land for breaking their own mold of reruns and putting on new programming. Now people of a certain age, me included, have a reason to watch television again. If you like Hot In Cleveland, you will like Life Is A Circus! Check out the facebook page of the same name and click that you like it. TV Land, please pick up my show! Thank you.
Pretty pathetic, Derrick. I don’t know a lot about how Hollywood works, but I do know that TV Land is not going to pick up a series based on you begging in the comments section on Niki Finke. God, I am SO SICK of people coming to this town waiting–no, EXPECTING, even DEMANDING–to be discovered! Get off your ass, Derrick, get a manager, schedule a meeting with Larry Jones and PITCH IT, MAN!!!! Good luck.
Loved it!!! Great writing, great acting. I’ve just finished screening all the upcoming sitcoms for this Fall, and other than Mike & Molly, Hot In Cleveland blows them all away. I would put this show up against any new Fall sitcom. You want to know what true drivel is, Cash? Can’t wait to see your reaction to Friends With Benefits, Perfect Couples, Mr. Sunshine and Outsourced…just the most awful writing you can imagine. I think the numbers for HIC will actually go up.
White, as always, was very funny and Bertinelli was very appealing. But did the laugh track bother anyone else?
Whoever planned the laugh track, and whoever operated the equipment to record it, should be incarcerated for, say, 3 years before considered for parole, and the equipment should either be destroyed or placed in a securely-locked,
weighted container and sunk in the deepest part of (since it borders Cleveland) Lake Erie.
Loved the premier. This is just what tv needs instead of the other garbage thats on! So far to me this is kind of like a throwback a make you feel good comedy! I hope its stays on & stays good! Looking forward to tonights. I really like Wendie Malicks character there all great & of course Betty White is the icing on the cake.
I thought this show was very funny…..Not many sitcoms make me bust out laughing….All of them are funny and I love Betty White….Elka (what a perfect name for her) That name came straight from St Olaf!!!
