EXCLUSIVE: Robert Downey Jr. and wife Susan Downey have named their Warner Bros-based production company Team Downey, and hired David Gambino to be president of production. For their first producing project, the Downeys have come aboard Yucatan, a heist film originally crafted by Steve McQueen as a star vehicle for himself. Team Downey will produce with Dan Lin, with whom they worked on Sherlock Holmes.
While Warner Bros tried for several years to find a movie in the nearly 1,700 pages of notes and storyboards compiled by McQueen and discovered in a trunk long after his death, Team Downey and Lin will go back to that source material and start from scratch. The studio made a new rights deal with McQueen’s son, Chad, who’ll be an executive producer with Lance Sloane. Downey is intrigued with the material and will get first crack at starring in it.
Gambino will move over from Silver Pictures and Dark Castle, where he produced Whiteout and the upcoming John Cusack-starrer The Factory. While numerous production execs interviewed for the job, Gambino had the advantage of having worked at Silver Pictures since 2001, including a stint as Susan Downey’s assistant while she was Silver Pictures president.
Deadline revealed in February that the Downeys were making a deal at Warner Bros, where he wrapped the Todd Phillips comedy Due Date. Downey will be engaged in films for the studio for the bulk of this year. He’ll start production on the Alfonso Cuaron-directed 3D space film Gravity, leave to shoot Sherlock Holmes 2, and then return to finish with Cuaron. Team Downey has opened offices in Venice. While a priority is finding a project for Downey Jr. to direct, they intend to go beyond hatching star vehicles for him.

Dan Lin is a great guy and a solid force. This sounds like a fantastic idea.
Wow…Gambino…really? The guy that thought “White Out” was a good idea? This guy has made nothing but bombs. DUMB choice
Gambino is a smart guy and an excellent choice for the job.
Wow, clearly you have never met Gambino, and even more clearly, you know very little about the business. He’s such a good guy, genuine, honest, smart, loyal. He absolutely deserves this new gig.
Great choice! I have worked a little with Gambino and can vouch for both his talent and hard work. Look forward to seeing future work…
I’ve pitched to this man and I will utterly vouch for his abilities. Robert Downey has chosen wisely.
sounds like you lost the job sour grapes.
Gambino did the best he could at that company, Dark Castle made shit bomb after shitbomb, if Whiteout had been made the way he wanted it, it would have been a hit.
I beg to differ but David Gambino is a solid filmmaker and an excellent choice by the Downeys. It’s rare to find an exec who is so smart and at the same time so open to new ideas, his own or others’. Go, David!
Gambino wasn’t responsible for WHITE OUT. Guy is a stand up person and knows the business. Smart move on Downey’s part.
No executive can or should be judged on one project only. Even Alex Young.
David Gambino is a smart decent guy who is very good at his job.
It’s nice to see this sort of person can still be rewarded in Hollywood.
Alex Young was not judged on one project – he’s left a trail of bad movies and bad relationships strewn across his last ten years, beginning at Paramount.
Gambino is a smart, up front guy. And he’s a rare exec who has film knowledge.
David is a sharp guy and a class act. Great choice.
Looking forward to seeing their movies. Seems like some disruptive innovation is about to happen in Hollywood. This announcement along with some others the past few months as hollywood starts to spring back to life after a few rough years. About time.
Likely dead for a while: dull story + big budget + big stars. Eliminate anything that looks, smells, talks or walks like that.
David is a smart, collaborative exec. He’s a great match to work with Susan and Robert.
While David was at Dark Castle, I had the pleasure of working with him to adapt one of my comic book properties into a pitch. He’s an incredible storyteller and a joy to work with.
The Downeys made a great choice.
I don’t know Gambino at all, but judging from that picture his taste is NOT to be trusted…
Stop breathing the aerosol darling.
Gambino is a rare class act in this business with great taste. He also had some great films in the works that weren’t greenlit. Downey’s lucky to have him.
David know the people, their tast, and how to work and play well with others — more people should learn these skills,
David, I couldn’t be happier for you. You’re a great guy who has the eye, and I’m sure the Downeys are going to be proud and prosperous to have you on board. All the best!!!!
Gambino is going to be a great asset to Team Downey, I personally work with the guy on set and I can honestly say that Gambino bring much more then experience to the table. If you are lucky enough to work with him then you would know what a hard working, respectable, and funny guy he is. I have watched him in action and there is no other producer out there that can do what he does. Very down to earth and honest. Great choice!!
You got to LOVE a person who feels you can know a persons talents by a picture. I’m sorry, you must have miss that lesson in first grade, You know about not judging a book by its cover? Classy!! Great choice Downey!
Here’s a sign of what people think of David. We’re using our real names.
…or you’re all brown-nosing suck-ups. (Just sayin’…)
David is a great guy! He will do great!
Susan & Robert + David = The Real A-Team.
Congrats to all.
KC
Great for David. He’s not only good at his job, but he is one of the few genuinely good guys in town. He is a fantastic choice. I will however miss the ice cold glass bottle coca cola everytime I visit… but I’ll be ok.
Awesome! He’s a good dude.
okay David….you can stop posting these compliments! haha JUST KIDDING…..I know David and he is a very solid guy. He actually returns your calls in a timely and pro manner….gotta love that!
Gambino not only “survived” but thrived in an atmosphere most people in this business neither have the brains, attitude or ability to work on the level he did for all those years for Joel Silver. Anyone who thinks this man is not a great executive, they themselves are nowhere near every reaching the top level themselves or working successfully on it.
No, I am not Gambino or even a friend. I have done business with him in the past and understand that he is a top-notch exec on every level. On levels most people, especially the ones writing negative comments about him here do not have the mental acumen to even begin to understand.
One more time, How many years did he work Joel Silver?
What years and what projects were made during the entire time he worked for the man?
You wish you had that resume. I know I wish I did.
David Gambino is solid! Great choise!
