Jim Fredrick just let his colleagues know he’ll be exiting his post as EVP of marketing at Sony Pictures’ Screen Gems. He left Warner Bros to take the Screen Gems job in late 2008, and oversaw campaigns for films that included Obsessed, Death At A Funeral, Legion and Dear John. I’m told he and Screen Gems president Clint Culpepper didn’t mesh — but the exit is described as amicable.

I think it’s because any relationship between Fredrick and actually having to work doesn’t really mesh.
Jim was way too buttoned up for that job. they need a scrappy creative who can run with traditional marketing as well as broad based knowledge of digital.
Clint was looking for a working boy to do his bidding. Jim has a mind of his own- there’s your ‘mash’ problem
Thank god! He was a total mismatch for the job from day one. No idea how he ever got it in the first place. Any word on his replacement?
Not a shocker. He could never fill Amy Mastriona’s shoes.
Amy, come back!!!!!
He didn’t replace Amy. He replaced Marc Weinstock when he was promoted.
I worked with Jim at WB and he is one of the most talented, smart, no-nonsense and friendly marketing execs in town. He’ll end up somewhere bigger and better.
Screen Gems has always been goodly aggressive when it comes to marketing their pix. And often opening to #1 box office. I’m (ahem) surprised he had issues with Clint…
Didn’t mesh with Culpepper? Shocker! Who does? The guy is impossible to work for.
Hey Leonidas-
are you kidding? Frederick is known across the board as one of the most self centered, least hard working, holier than thou marketing executives who spent more time in Anaheim watching Angel Yankee games at the expense of the vendors them he did at his desk!
Uh, it’s “Fredrick,” you malicious idiot.
Sony was really smart to move up Marc Weinstock to the big time but I bet Clint misses him!
I hear Loren Schwartz is getting the job. What a mistake that is.
Loren can’t create anything worthy of Screen Gems. But failing upwards seems to be a trend in this industry.
worthy of screen gems?
maybe schwartz’s track record for opening movies and managing film maker relationships is the reason he’s, as you call it, “failing upwards.” tommy gargotta and marc weinstock are no fools.
Heard that too. What a joke. Just goes to show lack of talent doesn’t matter as long as you can dodge the bullets long enough. Typical.
No one from Trailer Park would make such a comment
All of us, here at Trailer Park, actually really like both Jim Fredrick and Loren Schwartz, and would never make such an idiotic comment.
Weinstock and Van Gelder represent the hubris and arrogance of the industry.
Funny, I worked with Jim @ WB and he’s a good guy. He’s not a print guy but had no problem taking suggestion and was trusting. Maybe some here know a different Jim than me? Sure, he loved his Angel games but he also realized that this is movie advertising and having a life is a nice balance. Some need to learn that. Joel Wayne did the same thing and somehow, he opened films and is considered a genius (I agree). Screen Gems has little product. Kinda tough to open those kinds of films.
Sorry CM but please don’t mention Jim and Joel in the same sentence. Joel was an old school marketing man who truly earned his reputation.
Maybe internally at WB he seemed like a nice and capable guy, but the real Jim was condescending an self important. And the vendors paid for those baseball games etc. Having a life is one thing, taking advantage is another.
I understand your point in some ways. Jim could be snooty. I know that. Understand that I was a WB person that got free tickets and the like. I was also a vendor for nearly 20 years. Vendors DO pay for those things. Nature of the beast. Like when DeNiro in Casino talked about senators getting free chips and comped rooms. They got in that position to get that.
Still, flaws and all, he (IMO) was a cool cat if you got to understand him. Took time or me but if you bring it the right way, he would be very thankful. I can’t say how he dealt with you or your team and it might have been totally different.
I liked working with the man. I like that he went to games. I like that it wasn’t so damn serious.
I mentioned Joel not in talent. I mentioned him to compare lives outside of work. Joel never wanted to see anything after 5:00PM. GOOD FOR HIM. He got the work done. Most people nowadays work until 11:00 or later because of poor prep, a lack of being ever outside of the studio world (most start off at a studio with no idea what RGB even means) and not expecting what’s possibly coming. They only react and scramble. Not the best way to do quality work.
