EXCLUSIVE: Sony’s Columbia Pictures is getting closer to finding its new Spider-Man. I On Friday, studio decision-makers viewed the screen tests of most of the young actors they are seriously considering to play Peter Parker in the Marc Webb-directed relaunch of Spider-Man.
I’m told that nobody has won the job yet. It is possible that more candidates will be added. But there is a strong list of actors who screen tested, and most likely the new Peter Parker is among them. I’m told that the candidates whose screen tests were viewed Friday are: Jamie Bell (the Billy Elliot star who wrapped the Kevin Macdonald-directed The Eagle of the Ninth) , Star Trek’s Anton Yelchin, Kick-Ass’s Aaron Johnson, Andrew Garfield (The Social Network), Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief) and Alden Ehrenreich (Tetro). Frank Dillane (Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince) and Michael Angerano (Lords of Dogtown) are also in the final list that the studio is working from. I’m not sure if Angarano tested. I’ve heard Dillane decided not to because he is likely headed to attend drama school at London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
The studio wants to lock in its superhero soon, so that supporting roles can be cast around him. Production will begin before the year ends and the film has locked a July 3, 2012 release. The script by Jamie Vanderbilt is still being worked on, and (500) Days of Summer director Marc Webb is gearing up for a 3D shoot.
The prep time is useful for Webb, who has no experience in blockbuster or 3D fare. Despite this, the studio and producers Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad sparked to him because (500) Days of Summer convinced them Webb could relate how a young Peter Parker would think and feel, coming to grips with his enormous power while dealing with the usual teenage dilemmas. This was considered as important as the action sequences. Webb emerged as the choice shortly after Sony scrapped plans for a fourth installment of Spider-Man with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire. When Raimi decided not to go forward, the studio turned to a script that Vanderbilt wrote for the Raimi-Maguire franchise. Raimi didn’t love, but Sony did, and the studio used that as the catalyst to re-launch the franchise. The studio had no comment.

Say what you will about this story by everyone and their mother posting, but this is exciting stuff.
It’s what you grow up in awe of–Hollywood. The making of a star, the greenlighting of a movie, etc..
not feeling snarky today.
Not very impressed with the candidates for Spiderman so I’m hoping for a surprise.
let’s hope they get it right this time….this is supposed to be about Spider-Man, not Peter Parker and his relationship angst
…so, I take it you haven’t read a lot of Spider-Man comics, then?
Because at least half of them — depending on the year, sometimes a lot more — are about Peter Parker’s doomed-to-fail attempts to sustain a normal life despite the constant pressure of his role as Spider-Man. He got relationship angst galore, plus poverty angst, schoolwork angst, and any other kind of teenage angst they could lay on the poor bastard.
Sometimes even angst over how much angst he had. Spidey was a critical figure in 60s comics for exactly that reason: he was the first big, Marvel character to be contrasted to DC characters in that he had a real (read: problem-filled) life.
I concur with your critic above me, Spider-man is about Peter Parker. Always has been and always will be. The books are about 60% thought balloons of Peter just worrying to himself about his problems. It was the first hybrid between soap opera and superhero. If you want a guy in costume with no personal life, that’s Batman.. Bruce Wayne is just a cover he uses.
I remember when the 1st Spider-Man movie was in production and a friend was upset that they chose Toby… He thought it should be Jean-Claude Van Damme. I really wondered what his (and now your) exposure to the character was. Did your dad have a Spider-Man airbrushed on his Trans Am?
It’s kind of like being pissed off there isn’t any acting on 90210 or expecting originality on American Idol. You’re in the wrong place for what you seek brother.
No matter who they cast and 3D or not, I just don’t see this one living up to the hype and grosses of the other 3. You can call it a “reboot” but it still comes across as the 4th movie of its exact type in 10 years. I just don’t think audiences are going to be drawn to it.
Franchise fatigue has got to be a huge concern, and with a big budget and heavy P&A, I see this one as a misfire.
I still feel this reboot is premature and not needed-this rebooting thing has gone way overboard and I hate it, I knew it would happen though from the moment Batman Begins prepped because it’s too easy an idea for Hollywood not to do to death to everything.
Count the number of different versions of Spiderman that you can buy in any comic book store at any given time. Future Spiderman, past Spiderman, 6 different flavors of alternate reality Spiderman – comic books stopped doing reboots decades ago and switched over to running multiple versions of the character and the story at any given time. There’s a brilliant graphic novel by Neil Gaiman with Peter Parqua set in 1604; there’s Venom pretending to be Spiderman in the Dark Avengers; there’s Spiderman being Spiderman for grownups and teen Spiderman versions for kids. Continuity makes no difference at all here. Besides, Spider-Man 3 was such a fucking horrible movie that it’s a reboot or nothing. Nobody would go to see a movie that built on that legacy.
It’s not about artistic integrity or thoughtfully avoiding market saturation..
The only reason SONY is making more Spider-Man films (other than the heap of money they have made already) is to keep the license. If they stop making them, the rights revert to Marvel /Disney and then they will incorporate him into their universe.
Fox has the same issues with Fantastic Four/DareDevil/X-Men.. so expect them all to keep churning out movies with these characters just to keep the rights. At least until they stop making money..
I just don’t understand how this can be successfully rebooted. The original franchise is less than ten years old, was amazingly profitable, and told a terrific origin story. Now they’re going to retell the story AGAIN?
I’m not sure that audiences will accept this film simply because it says SPIDERMAN on the marquee. Have the boys in Hollywood not been paying attention to the box office disasters this summer??
I’m hoping that Logan Lerman gets the role, he seems like the perfect choice for a nerdy ‘younger’ Peter Parker. My second choice would be Anton Yelchin, but if he gets the role then someone else will take his spot in the remake of Fright Night and I would rather him in that.
I honestly can’t wait too find out who they pick for not only Peter Parker but the whole cast and to eventually see this!
They should be considering Donald Glover.
A Black Spider-Man is so overrated, we need a Korean Spider-Man: Peter Park!
I’d rather it be Crispin Glover.
Don Glover? How’s he doing? He’s a winner
Yeah. Actually I’m with you on that one. Maybe we’re finally going to start getting a few high quality films again – that will act as the ET and Star Wars of a new generation.
The fact that Donald Glover is not on this list is ridiculous.
Seriously. I saw Mystery Team the other day…Donald was hillarious in it! He definitely has some acting chops.
If not Peter Parker, I’d love to see him as a villian though.
Boring… It’s time we had a Korean Spider-Man! PETER PARK! PETER PARK!
I agree. The only way to have potential success with this is to go in a completely different direction. Anything will be stale / leftover-like. Glover would set a great tone in that perspective.
Hey that gives me a great idea Tyler Perry’s Spiderman.
Spiderman in drag. Cut the checks now!
Donald should get his own, original franchise. Something tailored to his amazing talent. Not some stale 40+ y/o comic franchise that’s obviously seen better days. As much as I despise John “strike scab” Ridley, he & his new partner George Lucas (“Red Tails”) should create something amazing especially for Donald.
Logan Lerman out of that list seems to make the most sense. I’d pick him if I was making the choice.
I think this is ridiculous, they wanna focus on Peter’s high-school years……those have been already covered in the first film.
BUT
if they insist on doing this (I think it’s stupid, though, they should have fought for the Raimi-Maguire duo, they made them a lot of money, the studio should have honored their wishes….it’s still not too late, just saying), they should at least try to be authentic…they want a teenage-Spidey-film, fine but why is only ONE candidate a teenager, then ? The others are in their early to mid twenties (20-27) NOW, even the youngest (18) will be 20 when the FIRST film comes out.
Yeah I know, Maguire was old for the role, too, but the concept back then wasn’t built on ‘Peter Parker’s high school years’…
Forget this “rebooting an 8-year-old franchise with 3-year-old third part” nonsense and get back the Raimi-Maguire-Dunst trio already!!!
what happened to josh hutcherson? is he still in the running?
C’mon.
It really oughtta be Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
I TOTALLY AGREE FOR JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT PLUS HE HAS ALREADY WORKED WITH THE DIRECTOR THE ONLY TRUE CHOICE!!
The new costume must appear handmade, like the true creation of an amateur teen sewer. Freakier cartoon eyes also.
The truth is, these actors are all pretty flat and interchangeable.
Bell, Angarano and Lerman would have to be the three front runners. They’ve all proven they can carry a movie.
WHEN did Angarano prove he can carry a movie
WTF cares? This is a bomb seen from two years out. Sony is run by idiots. If I was Disney, I’d buy them out. What a disaster.
hmmm maybe Sony is trying to torpedo the franchise so it’s wrecked by the time Disney gets its hands on it.
Scout Taylor-Compton Could Be Marry Jane Watson.
Andrew Garfield is the only person on the list with the chops to elevate it to a Raimi level film. He is best both aesthically, and technically the best person for the job. if you have not seen BOY A, watch it and you will realize how right he is.
Lerman is a horrible actor. Love Jamie Bell. Also think Anton is like a mini-Tobey.
I tend to agree on your first 2 points. Not in huge favor of Anton either, though. I’ve been following a young actor Tony Oller for awhile and thought he’d make a good Spiderman. Con: he was a Disney kid Pro: he’s got a new series coming out that will give him major exposure and it’s edgier fare. Have never heard he’s in the running for Spiderman but I think he’d make a good superhero.
Jamie Bell seems the best and most edgy choice. Others are a little bland.
Aaron Johnson’s the winner for me. He’s a great young actor with a huge career ahead of him.
Good thing the fan favourite and most believable as a teen spidey logan lerman is still in contention.if he’s cas as parker with yelchin as harry then there’s hope for the franchise
Logan lerman best suited as a usm teenage parker n spidey.finally the studio took notice of the fan polls.cast him already
