EXCLUSIVE: Sony’s Columbia Pictures is getting closer to finding its new Spider-Man. I On Friday, studio decision-makers viewed the screen tests of most of the young actors they are seriously considering to play Peter Parker in the Marc Webb-directed relaunch of Spider-Man.
I’m told that nobody has won the job yet. It is possible that more candidates will be added. But there is a strong list of actors who screen tested, and most likely the new Peter Parker is among them. I’m told that the candidates whose screen tests were viewed Friday are: Jamie Bell (the Billy Elliot star who wrapped the Kevin Macdonald-directed The Eagle of the Ninth) , Star Trek’s Anton Yelchin, Kick-Ass’s Aaron Johnson, Andrew Garfield (The Social Network), Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief) and Alden Ehrenreich (Tetro). Frank Dillane (Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince) and Michael Angerano (Lords of Dogtown) are also in the final list that the studio is working from. I’m not sure if Angarano tested. I’ve heard Dillane decided not to because he is likely headed to attend drama school at London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
The studio wants to lock in its superhero soon, so that supporting roles can be cast around him. Production will begin before the year ends and the film has locked a July 3, 2012 release. The script by Jamie Vanderbilt is still being worked on, and (500) Days of Summer director Marc Webb is gearing up for a 3D shoot.
The prep time is useful for Webb, who has no experience in blockbuster or 3D fare. Despite this, the studio and producers Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad sparked to him because (500) Days of Summer convinced them Webb could relate how a young Peter Parker would think and feel, coming to grips with his enormous power while dealing with the usual teenage dilemmas. This was considered as important as the action sequences. Webb emerged as the choice shortly after Sony scrapped plans for a fourth installment of Spider-Man with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire. When Raimi decided not to go forward, the studio turned to a script that Vanderbilt wrote for the Raimi-Maguire franchise. Raimi didn’t love, but Sony did, and the studio used that as the catalyst to re-launch the franchise. The studio had no comment.

It’s so sad that this tiresome dreck keeps getting foisted on the movie-going public awhile good original scripts go unproduced. But this is what happens when profit-seeking corporations run everything. It’s all about bucks and never about the art.
Why has Daniel Henney from “Three Rivers” not being considered. America needs to get over its past racial prejudices. We need Peter Park.
Indeed. If an Asian actor is not cast then that’s proof of this country’s racism. That argument’s air tight!
So let me get this straight. It’s fine if a white character’s race is changed, but it’s a bad idea a black or Asian character is changed to white?
Don’t get me wrong I also look down at white washing. But to me, changing a character’s race to make some kind of statement is just as wrong.
Logan Lerman for the win. Easily the best pick. He was great in 3:10 to Yuma, he is the right age, he looks the part and he has the acting chops to pull it off. He is only 18 so the studio would have to be stupid to choose one of those 27 year old actors over him to play a high schooler.
Logan Lerman is EASILY the best choice to portray spidey.
Can I vote for none of the above?
PS Webb is a lightweight who still has a LOT to prove — remember when there was talk that David Fincher would take over this franchise?
With a true A-list director, which Raimi was at the time of the first movie, the casting process would feel a lot less like a shot in the dark, the way it does now. Sony still has time to pull out of this decision.
Raimi was an A-list director at the time of the first movie? What alternate universe are you living on?
I’m shocked that Aaron Johnson is in the running. The guy just did KickAss, why would he want to do another one? Anton is cool. Jaime Bell I don’t know. This Alden Ehrenreich dude is solid. He was awesome in Tetro. But I think in the end they should go with Logan Lerman. He’s got the look and the wise ass demeanor of a geek suddenly with super powers. The more I think about this reboot the more I agree with it. The Sam Raimi movies missed the music of the comics in my opinion.
Re: “With a true A-list director, which Raimi was at the time of the first movie…”
No, he wasn’t. To studio execs he was an unproven entity. He tried getting some mainstream cred doing ‘For the Love of the Game”, but by and large he was (and remains) that “evil dead guy.”
I’m glad Michael Angerano is a finalist for the role, he’s a good actor and could probably take the role of Spiderman.
Michael Angarano? Are you kidding me? I’m not seeing that movie if that guy plays PP.
My vote is for Anton.
The smart play would have been to never reboot this and pay Joe Gordon-Levitt whatever to do Spidey. Sam Raimi would have to be gone (anyone who’s read Raimi’s take for SM4 would agree. It was awful). The franchise definitely needed new blood, but not sure if this high school reboot was the route. That said, Logan looks like a young Peter Parker while Jamie Bell has the acting chops (but is kinda not a good-looking dude and can’t mask his accent). Anton Yelchin is the best bet (and, arguably, a ‘star’) so I hope they go with Anton. Otherwise, this Marc Webb-led Spidey 4 is gonna feel like a TV pilot. Sony is hedging their bets by allegedly keeping the budget under 80, but we’ll see.
Ideal version? JGL w/ Rupert Fleisher (Zombieland) directing from a David Koepp script. But…oh well…
“this Marc Webb-led Spidey 4 is gonna feel like a TV pilot”
It’s going to feel exactly like Smallville. I expect the audience to get eerie flashbacks to Smallville all through the movie. And if Sony really manages to hold the line at $80 million, I’ll eat my hat. That is a pipe dream number, like Jonah Hex’s original $40 million. Like Hex, once the subpar footage starts rolling in, the studio will panic and start throwing money at it.
I thought it was between Josh Hutcherson/Carter Jenkins and they arent even on the list. Anyway, I hope Lerman gets it. He carried himself well in Percy Jackson. I think Anton is the best contender prior career-wise but I don’t see him having the look for this role.
Peter Parker could become relevant with an actor like Don Glover. Black kids getting teased and beat up for being smart, studious, or “acting white” is a huge problem in contemporary American society. Talk about reinventing the franchise for today!
That list is a yawn. Surprised they are going so far away from “formula”. A-list leads powered Dark Knight, original Spiderman, Wolverine and Iron Man. Try and build a film around a nobody like Brandon Routh and Superman crashes.
Sony has a list of people that basically no one has ever heard of.
You’d be surprised how many people of a certain age know Logan Lerman. And Jamie Bell and Anton Yelchin are fairly well known, too.
Besides, the character’s supposed to be back in high school. How many males under 25 out there are household names? Are you Zac Efron’s publicist or something?
May I remind you that not allot of people knew who Christopher Reeves, Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Tobey Maguire and Robert Downey jr where before they played superheroes! So your argument is completely invalid.
And like Michael said, you would shocked to know how well known these actors are.
If you visit the different tumblr sites, check twitter and other fan blogs, you will be surprised to note that Logan Lerman has a steadily increasing fan base. He’s my top choice for Spidey not so much bec of Percy Jackson which Chris Columbus and the script ruined but his other performances in 3:10 to Yuma, Meet Bill (he can be funny, wise ass), Gamer, and My One and Only.
Choose the right one. I will wait for that big surprise. I don’t have idea who can take the role. But good luck! Keep on posting.
Anton is the ‘star’ choice but I don’t see him doing this since he he just booked ‘Fright Night’. Whoever they pick is probably gonna do months of prep, exercise, and pre-pro so it seems that this movie would conflict with the ‘Fright Night’ schedule. But, I don’t know – maybe not.
Logan Lerman is the safe choice. Ok actor. Good-looking kid. Proved he can handle the action stuff (Percy Jackson). The fact is, Sony doesn’t have to go with a name with this reboot (hence the low-as-hell budget).
I still don’t get the logic behind the reboot move if only to keep the salaries low (No one’s getting paid over 2 million for this movie).
Lermann was born for the role of Peter Parker
I like Angarano, but I’m surprised nobody has mentioned that Jimmy Wolk guy. He looks like a Peter Parker
Joe Gordon Levitt is obviously an excellent choice but remember he might star in the third Batman movie…
Of those choices, I’d go with Ehrenreich or Yelchin, both of whom have proven to have acting chops. Aaron Johnson already played a similar role in Kick-Ass – and well – but it’s also cause of that that I’d like to just see a completely new take on this. Angarano was good in Snow Angels (and Almost Famous!) but I’m not sure I can see a big-budget franchise around him. I’ve heard great things about Andrew Garfield in Boy A and the fact that he’s in the new Fincher drama counts for something but I’ve only seen him in Imaginarium and I can’t picture him as Parker from that role. Ditto with Bell who is generally great. The only one I’d stay away from is Logan Lerman. I can see how he might have the look and vibe but based on his stilted work in Percy Jackson, he doesn’t have the chops to anchor a movie like this. I haven’t seen enough of Frank Dillane to speak either way about him.
First of all, Percy Jackson may have been a bad movie, but it wasn’t Lerman’s fault. It had extremely talented actors, but all that talent was completely wasted thanks to Chris Columbus who completely ignored the book it was based on.
Second, Lerman might not be the most talented actor on that list (In my opinion, that honor belongs to Andrew Garfield, but I can’t see him as Peter Parker ether.) but he does have the chops to anchor a movie like this on his own. If you don’t believe me, go watch 3:10 to Yuma, My One and Only or the TV-series Jack and Bobby.
yup, i agree, Garfield has the most depth but the guy’s turning 27 and may not age well with a franchise starting in HS. Lerman has proven his range in indie movies and played the outsider, geeky kid well in Jack and Bobby and teen angst in My One and Only.He can even do cheeky humor in Meet Bill. Plus he’s worked with A-List actors, Bale, Crowe, Carrey, Zellweger, and character thesps like Aaron Eckhart, the kid can hold his own
I agree that Jamie Bell does have potential. I do hope that he gets hired for the job, it would put an interesting “twist” into the movie.
I think what a lot of people here don’t realize is that the first Spider Man movie was okay. It wasn’t great and they went downhill drastically from there. That last movie was simply terrible. A reboot of the franchise is a good idea because comic book fans WANT to see this done right, they’re dying to see more well crafted comicbook movies. Raimi didn’t do a good job with the movies and frankly I’m sure many people are delighted that he’s gone as am I. The only way to go here is a reboot and if they do this right, if they get a good main cast this time, and if they pull off the amazing villains then we could really get phenomenal movie. If they botch it well…then we get another crappy movie to toss on the pile of failures.
The bulk of the posters above are obviously not real fans. A select few got the correct spelling of the character. It’s Spider-Man (with a hyphen), not Spiderman (one word).
You are a very silly person. very silly..
For the most part, I agree with you. Allot of these people who are posting are not true fans of the character. But if you read through allot of these posts you will also see that allot of people haven’t even mentioned Spider-Man. Why? To them anyone with a sarcastic and witty personality can play Spider-Man, but very few of them can master playing Peter Parker.
Whoooooooo-cares?!?
It’s funny to see people not use the hyphen, but I don’t think I ever noticed it until I was over 18. True fans enjoy stories, not hyphens!
And, they aren’t called true fans. They’re called true believers. Excelsior!
‘Nuff said!
Logan Lerman = best choice for a teenage Spiderman/Peter Parker
Alden Ehrenreich = Harry Osborn (Yelchin could also be Harry but he has too much on his plate already)
Lerman out of all ticks most of the boxes: young enough, not that expensive yet, growing fan base, good-looking kid, has done CGI, wire work, will be shooting in 3D from Aug to Sept for 3 Musketeers, doesn’t need too much prep for the action/CGI/3D, has the acting range, more importantly he’s the most believable as a teenage spidey. I’m personally tired of seeing 20/30 yr olds playing teens.
