EXCLUSIVE: Spartacus star Andy Whitfield has been given a clean bill of health and is already training for his return to the set of the Starz drama series. “I’m raring to go,” Whitfiled said in a phone interview from New Zealand. Fans will be able to meet the actor at next month’s Comic Con where Whitfield will make an appearance along with other actors and producers from Starz’s breakout series Spartacus: Blood and Sand.
Welsh-born Whitfield was diagnosed with treatable Stage 1 non-Hodgkin lymphoma in early March during a routine checkup just as the show was about to start shooting Season 2. He began treatment immediately while production was put on hold. About five weeks ago, tests revealed that Whitfield was clear of cancer and three weeks ago, he completed his treatment. Whitfield, who thanked Starz executives for sticking with him and supporting him through his ordeal, has already started his own training for what is a very physically demanding role and will start vigorous boot camp training at the end of July.
While Whitfield was undergoing treatment, Starz announced a six-episode Spartacus prequel focused on two other characters from the series, played by Lucy Lawless and John Hannah. Whitfield will appear in two of the episodes and is expected to get in front of the camera sometime in October, giving him plenty of time to get in shape. (He notes that for the first season, he only had a month to prepare.) Upon wrapping the prequel, the cast and crew are expected to segue directly into filming Season 2 of the original series.
Whitfield shaved his head after starting to lose his hair during chemo but it is already growing back and he will have his trademark Spartacus hairdo shortly.
For 35-year-old Whitfield, the news of his cancer diagnosis came out of the blue just as the first season of Spartacus was breaking ratings records for Starz week after week and production on Season 2 was about to begin.
“After the initial shock – I was a healthy young man and had no idea that this could happen — it was frustrating that the first season was ending on such a high note and we could’ve been rolling into season 2.” But after that initial shock came “time to heal, figure things out and spend time with my family,” he said. And the experience has thought him some important lessons, like: “Stay in the now and enjoy every moment.”

Congrats Andy. Hopefully it stays gone.
AWESOME!
I’m so thrilled to hear the great new about Andy!! After watching the first episode I knew this was going to be a smash hit. Andy brought such passion to his role as Spartacus, a fantastic actor! My best wishes to Andy and I can’t wait to see him once again as SPARTACUS…love him!
The world of fantasy has been made better by your acting abilities Andy. We here in the deep south ae looking forward to following your long and flourising career. You have set the bar so high, I just could not imagine anyone else being Spartacus. So, cudos to you man, and may the worst be behind you and the future greet you with open arms!
I am so happy you are feeling better! Can’t wait for the new season. Rest and continue to heal.
Without Andy there would be no season 2.. he is spartacus….long live spartacus..
Actually season 2 is going to be about before they brought Spartacus into the series. This season is actually going to be about how Batiatus evolved into the lanista that he became and you’ll see how all the other gladiators evolved as well. Like they did with star wars we saw chapter 2 in the beginning now we’re rewinding to chapter 1 then to 3 for the thrid season.
Actually, season 2 will be a continuation, with a 6 episode “prequel” called Spartacus: Gods of the Arena which will air on Starz in January.
Yes is there is only one Spartacus. Come back soon Andy!
Says he has a clean bill of health and cancer free so healing is done now please continue the fantastic work on this awesome show as i’m so anxious to see the new season! SO happy you’re cured Andy and good luck on the new season keep up the great work!
yay for him and his family. I am glad he is doing well and can’t wait to see the 2nd installment!!!!
Much love from,
Charleston, SC
God Bless you Andy.
Yay! Andy
I pray you remain in good health
Andy Whitfield is an incredible actor and it is wonderful news that he is in good health once again, we are looking forward to the continuation of “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” The show is absolutely terrific and captivating. God Bless you and your family Andy!
Excellent news!
Well done Andy.
I absolutely LOVE the Spartacus series and have enjoyed Andy Whitfield in each and every performance I’ve been blessed to see him. But, as a mother to a daughter Andy’s age, I was dumb-founded with his diagnosis. I cannot fathom even the idea of a diagnosis like this for my child. However, on the other hand, as a cancer survivor myself (thyroid/50% chance/7 yrs. ago/treatments/cancer-free now/shaved my head too), I know Andy will see life thru wonderfully enlightened eyes from this day forward. His wife, children, parents, sister, and all of the other important people in his life will appreciate the changes that he will exhibit. I look so forward to the next Spartacus series and happiness does not describe the feelings that I have for Andy and his “new” diagnosis. Love to Andy, his family and all the Spartacus cast. Deb
Woot! You are a toughie Babe.. Congradulations to you!!! AND – bring on my Spartacus Hero once again. Can’t wait!
Take care though while training and pace yourself.
Lots of well wishes and hugs from me and my family in Colorado
I am so happy that Andy has made it through his tough fight.
hopefully it stays gone for good…God Bless
its good to know that you are free from cancer, really can’t wait to see you back in ARENA.. Youre still the Champion not only in CAPULA but in every person who believe’s that they will get their freedom because of you.. Love you Andy See you on the next season godbless..

Glad u can start filming again, your character is awesome…..
I beleave it would tank if andy will not appear as spartacus. The reson why i beleave this is because the passion and perfprmance that this man gave was his all,so intense that noone will be able to accomplish . i am very sorry because the ratings as i know will fail. This i know cause of all my friends and there friends comments on this topic. i wish him ,family and kids my prayers.
I’m huge fan in Korea. I really hope that he get well soon.
Wonderful news. Good for him!
I watched the season 1 and you know what i finished the whole season in one night which takes approximately 12/13 hours. But most important thing is that i couldn’t pull me put of this extraordinary series. Its really great news that we are having him back for the second season.
YES!!!!!!!!
Does IT mean that they can shoot the 2nd Season Now?
Good for him, and I hope he stays healthy.

seems like a nice guy, happy for him.
Too bad the show was total insulting crap.
If it’s so insulting don’t watch it. It warns you of graphic content at the beginning of each episode.
This is about Andy Whitfield’s health- if you don’t like the show change the channel. I’m sending only positive thoughts for Andy-so glad to hear the good news
I’m with you. I think Spartacus is the best show on tv. I prayed for Andy, and I’m so happy that my prayers were answered. I can’t wait for Season 2!!!!!
So if the shows so insulting and you don’t watch it, what bring you to this page? Damn some ppl just have to open there mouth. Good for you Andy!
That’s what channel remotes are for. Change the channel and leave the show for us who really enjoy it.
why make a comment about the show this is about a young actors life changing illness you clown no need.
Brilliant work!! Excellent team. We know that the 2nd season will be even better!
So happy for Andy and his family. You’re a legend in many people’s lifes. Started crying when I heard that he was diagnosed. My stepmom would have loved the series.
Keep up the good work everyone!!
I sorry to have to say this but its obvious the guy who wrote this post is a (vegan-liberal) and you know what that means, as Arnold would say, He’s just a little GIRLY MON for not liking SPARTACUS. I’m glad your feeling better Andy now get those new season rolling out
Spartacus is a great show!! If you were offended by it then why did you watch it?? There is a warning before each show…this show is a part of Roman history. Next time check your TV guide and don’t go to that channel!!!
Great News!
Fantastic news – So pleased to hear Andy’s got a clean bill of health.
Big fan of Spartacus Blood and Sand and Andy, here in the UK
First, i’m so glad he is cancer free and returning to good health!!! Second, bring on season 2!!!!!
Fabulous news!!! I love this series so frakking much and Mr. Whitfield is perfect in the role. Thank goodness he’s healthy and the show can continue.
He’ll be covered in baby oil and dry humping in no time.
Good for him!
Congratulations, Andy – doubtful Sparticus himself could defeat something like that. It’s a great show, no small part due to Andy’s incredible acting.
? ??? ?? ???? ? ????? ??? ????????.
Welcome back Andy! You are going to do terrific things for SPARTACUS and have a fabulous career!!
What amazing news to hear! I think we all were nervous that there would be some sort of setback with Andy’s health. Modern medicine wins one!!
SO happy to hear this news! And happy to have Andy back as Spartacus!
This show started off terribly, but the end of the season was the best. Can’t wait for the new season and happy that Andy is back. Does this mean that the prequel is not happening?
The prequel series is still happening, with Whitfield doing a cameo appearance. After the miniseries is finished, Starz is immediately starting production of Season 2.
Good for him. The show still blows goats and has some of the worst writing EVER.
You are obviously as clueless as it comes to the clever Shakespearean machinations in the story lines, so enjoy your goats – the acting and writing are top-notch across the board. Agreed, however, good for Andy! Rock on!
Maybe you should go back to watching Harry Potter then.
AMAZING SHOW!! screw all of u who disagree this show depicts grately of how life was in during the Roman republic and all the corruption that may have actually taken place.
Hmmm maybe you should stick with the comic books youve been reading. Glad you’re back Andy!!! The show wouldve been nothing without you.
meow he is hot! and of course the series is awesome – great writing and production!
thilalife: the prequel is still happening. It should get going in the next few weeks, to be shot over the (northern hemisphere’s) summer. As soon as it wraps, production will move directly into season two, which will also air directly after the prequels are completed airing in the United States. In essence, it’s as if in 2011 there will be 18 episodes rather than a mere 12, which is what was originally planned, with the first six being the prequels and the next 12 taking place after the events of season one.
GREAT NEWS! SO HAPPY FOR YOU ANDY! You have a wonderful talent, and it’s so good that you’ll be able to share more of it with us. My warmest wishes to you and your family.
Woot! Fan of the show happy to hear Andy is just fine.
Awesome news! Spartacus is the best thing I’ve seen all year thus far. Looking forward to season two with great anticipation. I have told countless friends about this series.
