NBC’s The Office without Steve Carell is now a reality. First, he let it slip while promoting Date Night that he was considering an exit when his contract expires at the end of the upcoming 7th season. Now Carell confirmed his plans to reporters while promoting his next feature Despicable Me. No big surprise here, and NBC brass already said at the upfronts that they are making plans for the show in the event of Carell’s departure.
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

Despicable Me – How aptly titled.
Ricky Gervais, the creator of the British “Office”, Had the right idea. The Office was never meant to go beyond a set amount of seasons. We stopped watching the American version around season 2. NBC should take the opportunity to cancel the show. Instead they should focus on Amy Pohlers “parks And Rec” which has gotten better with each season and it probably funnier then the office.

Good time to bail, this show has jumped the shark. They should end it after this year, but NBC has such a pathetic lineup they will try to hold onto this show for as long as they can. Ted McGinley as the new boss in season 8?
He could play a former network head named Jeb Ziker.
“After losing his job as a network president, Jeb’s uncle gets him a job as a manager of a Dunder Mifflin office. But Jeb knows even less about paper than he does about TV.”
How’s Community, Parks and Recreation, The Office and 30 Rock a pathetic line-up…? Granted The Office hasn’t been funny in some time now, the other three a great.
I think The Office should have ended after season three.
The Office cannot/should not exist without Michael Scott.
Agreed. This show died a year ago, time to let it rest in peace after Carell’s departure.
The only “plan” for the show should be to let it have a semi-graceful ending.
Instead, I suspect this will be headed into Laverne-without-Shirley territory (e.g., an atrocity).
“Laverne Without Shirley” territory?
How about “Northern Exposure Without Rob Morrow” territory instead? Large ensemble cast of quirky characters loses anchor character. The show needed to end when Rob Morrow left, but it limped on for another, painful half-season.
Hopefully, the makers of The Office will keep Northern Exposure in mind throughout the new season and head toward ending the show completely in May.

End it now!!! It still ran 3 years too long. Why do networks continue to beat a dead horse. Pam and Jim have been turned from two likable characters to the two I would most like to see gone. Pam is now an unfunny shrew. This show has gone past it’s expiration date.
THE OFFICE lost it season before last, and the whole “Jim and Pam Get Married!” and “Jim and Pam Have a Baby!” subplots weren’t developed at all — it’s like NBC needed Sweeps Stunts to promote the show, so they pushed those episodes at the expense of really utilizing them to comedic worth. The stories weren’t organically grown, they missed a golden chance there to develop those episodes and exploit comedic possibilities therein, but they did NOTHING with them whatsoever except use them as 2-3 episode arcs. And then it was right back to the old formula afterwards.
Carell is smart to leave…the ship has been taking on water creatively for some time. NBC would be wise to end the series next season…but they won’t. And it’ll be less of the same when he’s gone.
The classy thing to do would be to plan the show’s end around Carell’s departure.
However this is Zucker’s NBC. Therefore forget any possibility of a graceful ending for this show.
Yes, please cancel the show. Watching it now is like biting into a lump of stale shit.
How in the world will they go on without Steve Carrell? It will be a disaster. It really is not that good anymore anyway. NBC is loathe to try to come up with something new so they will beat this one into the ground until it’s intolerable. Anyone remember the last season of “Roseanne?” A total mess…
Above posts are correct that NBC is desperate so they will try to keep this going. I’m sure they think (like the rest of Hollywood) that Jim Krasinski is a breakout star – despite the fact that ALL his feature films have bombed – and will turn it into the Jim and Pam Show.
Whereas if they were smart they’d have Angela and Kevin marry – THAT’S a show I’d watch.
The show was an insult to the real Office
And you sir were an insult to England’s world cup dreams!
Maybe its just me, but I think it should turn into a dark comedy, with Pam having an affair with Dwight, Creed killing somebody and hiding the body in the trunk of his car and never being able to get rid of it for some reason, Ryan doing drugs and hallucinating, maybe Angie kidnapping a baby after she is unable to conceive a child for Dwight, etc. You know, hilarious stuff like that. If Michael Scott is going to be gone, they’re really going to have to step it up. Otherwise, they should just end it.
The characters have all become caricatures of their former selves, something that happens often when shows go on longer than they should.
I agree with the majority that this should not continue. End it in its final season with Carell rather than let it limp along for an additional season or two.
While an ensemble show, no doubt that Carell is the main character. Continuing without him will be like “Happy Days” after Ron Howard left. Maybe Ted McGinley can take over for Carell – he’s usually the flying Dutchman of sitcoms anyway (“Married with Children” anyone?).
End the show. Beg Ricky Gervais to do a guest spot before the end.
Dear TheyNeverLearn,
I believe the young man’s name is John Krasinski. Not Jim.
I think all of those actors are good.
I’m just not a huge fan of “Post-Modern Cynicism” and “The Comedy of Discomfort”.
When I watch a comedy, I want the village idiots to show up and
recklessly make asses of themselves.
The whole conceit of actors breaking the fourth wall and looking directly into the camera
is a device that should be used sparingly by writers doing their best work.
As a “go to” device, it loses it’s power quickly.
It devolves into:
“Hey. We both know I’m not really this asshole in these imaginary circumstances.
I’m really a very smart guy who went to a great college and I’m also one of the writers.
Just saying.” ( nod nod wink wink )
It’s something that turns clowns into people who are too cool for the room, and I can’t use that.

The whole laughter is the best medicine thing is true.
It’s therapeutic.
When I get teased by a show like this, there’s no release.
It turns into work.
Like doing a lot of vigorous fucking without an orgasm.
Not a fan.
