A day after Larry King officially announced he will leave his CNN primetime talk show after 25 years, we hear the cable news network is in talks with Joy Behar to replace him. Behar has been one of the strongest internal candidates to succeed King. Her The Joy Behar Show on HLN (formerly known as CNN Headlline News and CNN2) has been the brightest spot on CNN’s mostly grim ratings report. It had the most growth of any primetime CNN show in Q2 among total viewers, up +39%. For comparison, CNN top anchor Anderson Cooper’s ratings were down -30%, King’s down -37%. Behar was also a regular fill-in for King on his show, a stint that led to her getting her own show on HLN.
A deal with Behar would go against King’s wishes. On his show last night, the veteran interviewer reiterated his support for Seacrest as his successor. “He’s curious, he’s interesting, he’s likable,” King said of the American Idol host. “If he has a great interest in politics, I would recommend him. But I’m sure there’s a ton of people who could do it. Come on, it’s Q&A.” Among those people is America’s Got Talent judge Piers Morgan who, according to British papers, had been in talks for King’s job. CBS Evening News host Katie Couric’s name also has been part of the mix, with conflicting reports on whether she is interested or not. Her contract with CBS is up next year.
It is not clear if an upgrade to a tentpole primetime position on CNN would affect Behar’s other full-time job on ABC’s The View. So far, she has successfully juggled both the ABC daytime talk show and her primetime talker on HLN.

Notice how they put it in percentages (39%) that is an increase of ~5 viewers, from 8 to 13. Thye use percentages because they do not want to show how few those viewers are in numbers.

As soon as I saw that statistic, that her ratings were up 39% I thought, “How long has her show even been on???” It would be hard for the ratings to go DOWN significantly, when she didn’t even HAVE a show on HNN 6 months ago! How about having a NON-political host? How about having a host on an ENTERTAINMENT show who understands it’s about ENTERTAINMENT and not about trying to show off how SMART the host is? Great idea to have Joy replace Larry. I would like to see the same format she is doing now. Relaxed, fun and great variety of guests. Not stiff long interviews like LK, with all due respect. Not sure what CNN policy would be on the format, etc. Maybe even a mixture of the two a couple days of each type interviews.
I think her show now is a delight even though they hit some hard subjects.

No. I also watch her. I “found” Joy Behar’s show by accident when I was switching around one night (when I didn’t care for Larry’s guest that evening). I was so pleasantly surprised that I watched the rerun at midnight. Then I found myself watching her every night. I was talking to my brother one night and even he mentioned that he liked Joy Behar. So, there are quite a few of us out here. I’d like to see her replace Larry, although I’d like her to mix it up a little with some serious guests along with the jokey ones.

I don’t think his show did bad in the ratings but it was not his best area. He stated that he preferred to not work long days doing two types of programs. I don’t know how Hannity and Beck do it daily as they must work very long hours.

Joy Behar is totally a joke. Love her but she is not an interviewer and based on her appearances to date, has a Palin-esque command of world politics and rational thought. Keep her for the IDOL shows and for interviewing Queen Noor. Get someone else for whatever’s left of the real-news aspects of LKL.
This would be surprising since Behar’s the linchpin of CNN’s alt network primetme schedule (HLN), which purposely skews female. And there’s a chance that Nancy Grace, the other main puzzle piece on HLN primetime, might leave if her syndicated daytime talk show ever takes off – it would offer her much more $$ and probably a healthy ownership stake. So Behar is critical to their now-established format. The main CNN channel is more balanced between male and female demos. Women might like Behar from The View but she’s the equivalent of nails on a blackboard to men. And that CNN 9pm talkshow has always been part of CNN’s international line-up; Behar doesn’t have that global mass appeal CNNI demands. All of this adds up to it being an odd move but then again, CNN hasn’t been making decisions based on research, knowledge and logic for quite some time.
Oh, dear, surely CNN can find someone better than that harridan to replace King. Ugh.
Joy does do a great job on HLN but I’m not certain that’s the right choice.
The ideal replacement is Jon Stewart. He’s already adept at interviewing presidents, politicians, celebrities, and pretty much anyone… Too bad he’s too smart to take the job.

Never understood her appeal, esp since more than a few comment on how grating her voice is…she’s loud, she doesn’t really listen to her subjects and often has her own mind made up which makes it difficult to be an objective interviewer.

Don’t worry, if Joy Behar gets the gig your teeny weenies won’t get any teenier. Joy Behar in actuality would be great, and certainly much better than the insufferable bland Seacrest. And, former dj Larry King did not have a journalism degree or a college degree, and is far older than so-called “old hag” Behar.

I don’t like the idea of a woman taking over for Larry, unless they can get Sara Palin. I’d nominate Steve Meekus (spelling?) who used to do a radio show in Macon or Jay Leno. Jay is a great interviewer and could do 60 @ 60, similar to his old 10 @ 10, but for a full hour.

No surprise. They’ve been grooming her, Seacrest, and others for years. Jesse Ventura’s guesthosting was quite impressive. I’d watch religiously, if he took over. Too bad CNN doesn’t have the balls.

I don’t watch Larry and I won’t watch Joy. Nobody springs to mind. What I would watch, occasionally, is an open audition like CBS used to replace Craig Kilborn.
Joy Behar does a terrific job on her show and she would be an interesting choice to replace King. My money would be on Katie Couric if she is interested. Couric proved her interviewing prowess with the Sarah Palin interview. She does her homework and asks tough questions but doesn’t intimidate.

CNN has stooped to a new level with this one. She has absolutely no authenticity in political subjects.
“No authenticity”?? Joy Behar has done an incredible job on The View and her own show. The only reason I would exclude her from Larry’s spot is because she’s too left leaning. We need a balance which doesn’t capitalize on the emotional fringes who really do nothing to bridge the divides.
