20th Century Fox and Walden Media have released the first trailer for The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, the third installment of the CS Lewis The Chronicles of Narnia series. What is interesting about this trailer is how much the Michael Apted-directed film seems in the wheelhouse of the family film platform now being followed by Disney picture chief Rich Ross. After the last film disappointed–its battle theme didn’t turn on the family crowd the way the original film did–the last regime at Disney punted the project. The filmmakers overhauled the series to trim the budget and tried to return to the magical themes of the first hit film. The film opens December 10. It was shot in 2D and converted to 3D.

If they managed those great looking effects on a “trimmed” budget than they did a fantastic job. Looks pretty good.
Not entirely the fault of the film – “Prince Caspian” was a difficult book to get through, and my least favorite in the series. “Dawn Treader” is my favorite, and the favorite of a lot of readers. They should make their money back on this one…
Oh, dear lord. How much longer do we have to suffer through 3D? Okay guys, it was fun and novel now lets just get back to making good movies people want to see and not relying on gimmicks.
Totally agree!
This looks really good. Better than the Potter trailer did. Maybe the Narnia franchise finally has a studio and director that understands and supports it, as opposed to the half-hearted, half-assed way with which Disney always treated it. Your loss, Disney – I hope.
I suppose every film has to be 3D to matter these days, even if you have to convert a 2D one into 3D. Pretty soon every movie will be $20 just to put on those stupid glasses. I think I’m going to start my own polarized glasses business.
Disney grossly mis-managed the release of Prince Caspian, bringing it out in the middle of May between two blockbusters (Iron Man and the new Indiana Jones). In fact, since Indy opened the following Wednesday, Caspian didn’t even have a full week of breathing space between it and the mega-hyped Lucas/Spielberg juggernaut. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
Add to that a mediocre marketing campaign — some fans didn’t even realize the movie was opening that month — and Caspian’s fate was sealed. I’m glad to see this series out of Disney’s fumbling hands, and hope it has better luck with Fox.
Lev – yes, “Prince Caspian” has always been the “dud” of the Narnia chronicles. Not a bad book, but by no means as cinematic as the rest.
This trailer looks good.
I have to say, what impressed me most about the trailer was the sense of environment and that’s important for a movie with VOYAGE in the title. I saw it in front of Toy Story in 3D but not in Imax. The article says that it’s a 3D conversion but it looked WAAAY better than Clash of the Titans. Either the software’s getting better or the people using it are finding their mojo.
What I’ll never understand is why Disney wanted to push it to a summer release. And not just that, but a May release, when kids aren’t out of school yet. And then insisted on that for future films even after Caspian disappointed. That’s one of the reasons Walden Media liked Fox, they agreed to move it back to Christmas. Hope this succeeds.
I’m gonna say this will be a success. It seems to me that the director on this one seems to know what he’s doing. Those 3D effects were GOOD. The special effects (trimmed budget?) are totally convincing, and most importantly, it feels like Narnia to me.
It feels wintry, magical, strange, and it focuses more on the kids and the environment, which is what we always wanted. We didn’t want to see swarms of grown up half human animal things, at least, not until the very end, or on brief occasions. This one, I hope, will be up close and personal in the lives of the Pevensie children.
i think its beautiful……………….
although only 2 of the pevensies are there
