The new TNT original series Memphis Beat got off to a solid start last night, drawing 4.3 million viewers. It built on its lead-in, the second-season premiere of HawthoRNe, which opened with 3.4 million viewers. Both shows outperformed HawthoRNe‘s series debut last year. While the Jason Lee-starring Memphis Beat couldn’t beat the debut of Betty White’s Hot in Cleveland on TV Land last week (4.8 million), the TNT premiere performance is still impressive.

won’t last..
Who writes Hawthorne? I SO want to like this show (I like Jada Pinkett Smith and Michael Vartan), but the show feels like melodramatic crap. The idea is good (not as over-the-top as Nurse Jackie, although I love that show) but the execution just… isn’t.
Why can’t Jada and Michael get better projects than this? And shouldn’t Michael be at the point where he’s starring in his own shows anyway?
I’ll be surprised if MEMPHIS BEAT holds its audience. If you think the idea of an Asian Elvis is still funny, this is the show for you. All the elements were enticing but the show itself lacked any spark. Lee was working outside his range and I thought the story was poor.
I thought Memphis Beat was pretty enjoyable. I agree with Lesley though. Jada is an interesting person to watch but Hawthorne is dreadful. It feels more like a Lifetime special than a series. The writing is horrible. It’s appropriate that it takes place in a hospital as the show is flat-lining.
On another note, what’s with the copycat naming of doctor show’s after the title character like Fox’s “House”. You’d think Hawthorne was about a hospital in Hawthorne, not a character named “Hawthorne.”
That’s true. When House premiered, I thought it was gonna be about a domicile! Boy, was I ever wrong!
I am so disappointed in Memphis Beat. I have never heard such pitiful attempts to sound like a Memphian. The characters belong in a small southern town not a large metro police department like Memphis. Dialog about a “ward” – come on – Memphis isn’t in Louisiana. It wouldn’t hurt for the writers to do a little homework and how hard is it to find actors who can actual stay in character with a southern accent for more than 3 words? The only charcters who are belivable are the detective’s Mom and the little girl in the tree house.
Wards are how the Memphis police department refer to their neighborhoods. There are nine wards in Memphis. Research done, Bucko! Ward. Word.
Where’s the 67 SS Chevelle that was in all the promos????
All through the show he was toolin’ around in a 60′s GTO. I only watched the crummy show because I THOUGHT it was going to be the first cop show to feature the 67 SS as the star’s main ride..
It would have been the only thing about the show that you could consider an original concept.
I have no reason to watch without the Chevelle.
I agree. I saw the Chevelle in the previews and thought cool beans I think I will start watching this. Then the guy is running around in some piece of crap Pontiac! I hate it when producers think viewers are so stupid that we wouldn’t notice this.
I agree
No Chevelle, no Memphis Beat for me
This is just the latest addition to the TNT’s cringe-worthy drama slate. Some of these ideas are so over the top they literally sound like SNL sketches.
As a point of fact “both shows” did not outperformed HawthoRNe’s series debut last year. Last June, the premiere of HawthoRNe averaged 3.83 million viewers. Tuesday night, the season 2 premiere averaged 3.42 million viewers a decline of -10.7%.
HawthoRNe was also down across all adult and female demos despite a stronger lead-in from Bones this year.
So it was not both shows, just Memhis Beat that outperformed last season’s HawthoRNe premiere.
I wonder if TNT is hoping for something to take over as the network’s tentpole if The Closer wraps this year.
Wanted to like Memphis Beat more than I did. It’s an interesting city, too bad they’re not shooting it on location.
OK, let me just say I’ve lived in the south all my life. In TN and GA mainly. Only a yankee would care a fig about the accents. It is really a nitpicking complaint. I guess the prospect of being right about that really made some people feel important. This show is great. The acting is good and it is not a formula detective show. It is unique in many ways. Guess some people felt important about that one too. Let’s face it, opinions should somehow correspond to reality folks. Oh I guess it trespasses on their willful suspension of disbelief, since they don’t believe in anything.
I enjoy this show very much … guess I like the laid-back easy-going pace of it … and I love the music! Impersonating Elvis or not, Jason Lee is fun to listen to.
I thought it was a good start and hopefully will get better. Wish they had more humor. I especially liked the supporting cast…some very interesting choices.
In this day and age of REALITY tv shows I find that programs like Hawthorne, House, and Memphis Beat are much more enjoyable than Amazing Race, Survivor, or the numerous Bachelor/Bachelorette programs.
Really wanted to like it. Jason Lee is a really enjoyable actor but this show is just crap.
