USA Network has given a cast-contingent pilot order to Common Law, a comedic buddy cop drama from producer Jon Turteltaub. The project, written by Cormac & Marianne Wibberley, centers on cops Wes Mitchell and Travis Marks, partners at LAPD. The problem is Wes, a methodical former lawyer with a passion for cars, gardening and his ex-wife, and Travis, a maverick ladies’ man who served time in juvie, can’t stand each other. To revive their flagging professional relationship, their Captain sends them to couples therapy.
CBS TV Studios and Turteltaub’s Junction Entertainment are producing with Cormac & Marianne Wibberley and Turteltaub executive producing. Dan Shotz and Karim Zreik will serve as co-executive producers.
“If you’re going to do a cop show, it better be something special – and we believe this one is,” USA’s president of original programming Jeff Wachtel said. “It’s funny, it’s fresh, and the writing is just fantastic.”
Common Law joins two other pilots recently greenlighted by USA, Necessary Roughness and A Legal Mind. The buddy cop show genre is back this year with the order for Common Law, Fox’s new series The Good Guys and, to some extent (it’s about P.I. buddies), FX’s Terriers.

Now that’s clever…
Buddy cop show. What will they think of next?
I would watch this.
There are just not enough buddy cop shows on the air! This is truly needed to help satisfy the unsatiable appetite America has for our men in blue. I say there should be a COP TV network 24/7 followed by DETECTIVE TV followed by COURT TV – oh, there already is one.
Yes, because The Good Guys is such a smash. Sounds lame and based on the pedigree, will be lame.
In fact this isn’t so generic as it sounds. I for one can’t think of a good and long running buddy cop show in the last 10 years or so. Judging Fox’s Good Guys after 2 episodes it will be neither good nor long running.
That being said…I don’t think this will be good either because I didn’t like 1 single USA show. FX’s Terriers sounds a lot more promising.
Partners who can’t stand one another? So original…

Really, couples therapy?
Yawn.
Is USA one of the cable networks that is considering Larry Charles’ sci-fi pilot?
And the USA hot streak continues …
The Wibberly’s are hacks plain and simple. Go thru there movies and history. They will be out of the business in 5 years (rich) but out anyone who has worked with the agoraphobics will tell you they are middling writers that is why they are chasing after TV.
Why did they fire UTA. They took mediocre writers and sold them as stars and made them multi-millionaires. Only problem with treating them as stars is the Wibberly’s believed they are stars and they are not even close. Hack Hack Hacks.
Agree with everything you say, but come on- everyone fires UTA at some point. It’s how you know you’ve arrived.
Married With Handguns
I really hope that they are not too busy doing this to revive Jericho!
Funny Wibberly story I worked at an agency as a temp. The husband Wibberly needed to cancel a meeting that locked up a $750,000 job and he they said he wouldn’t leave his house. They actually got the studio exec to come to them somewhere in Redondo Beach at there compound. He hired them in the room and they never went to the studio.
Heard Bruckheimer will never work with these writers after getting burned by Marianne Wibberly. And noone messes with Jerry Bruckheimer and lives to talk about it.
Agoraphobic writers..is this a joke? Well, at least they picked the right profession for a stay-at-home gig.!
As for this concept,it fits neatly into the pattern of all USA shows– Psych,Burn Notice, In Plain Sight, Royal Pains, White Collar–all are procedurals with a bickering male odd couple at the center .(exept in Burn you’ve got the hot chick in the middle, and in Sight it’s a male female–but lets face it,Mary’s pretty butch)
I think it all comes down to one simple thing –HOW LIKABLE IS YOUR CAST?
If we love the characters, we will tune in to see them knitting a sweater. Just give us really good actors with dynamite appeal. Done. I’m yours
I love Michael Ealy already
Love this show. Look forward to it every week. Please, give us more than 11 episodes. No one could play these roles better than Warren Cole and Michael Ealy.
I loved Michael ealy in the good wife. This show is just not believeable. BRING BACK SOUTHLAND PLEASE!!!!!
