Jairo Alvarado, who stepped right out UCLA and stepped into a job as a Warner Bros creative exec 18 months ago, is leaving next month to become a manager at 3 Arts. The 24-year old Alvarado said he wasn’t thinking of a career change before a general meeting with 3 Arts’ Tom Lassally, another Warner Bros exec who made the career transition after he exited the studio. “We discussed all the short films I advocated and spread around to agents, and it turned into a three-hour conversation with Tom saying, `You’ve got to meet Erwin,” Alvarado said. He spent another two hours with 3 Arts chief Erwin Stoff, and walked out with a job offer.
Alvarado traveled a charmed path to get to Warner Bros. He’s a local kid who was recruited in high school by the studio, which provided a scholarship that included summer industry internships. After graduation, he met with former production president Kevin McCormick, and got the job offer for a CE position. While there isn’t much glamour in those entry level executive posts, Alvarado said he said he’s helped about a dozen young directors get signed during his 18 month Warner Bros stint. He was an early advocate of Fede Alvarez’s short Panic Attack, which was acquired by Sam Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures, and Ricardo De Montreuil’s The Raven, which is also in deal talks. “I’ve discovered I like finding new talent the town responds to,” he said. Stoff said the management company has made it a priority to find fresh voices, and Alvarez has a nose for it. “In his new career as a manager, he will have the opportunity to build lasting and nurturing relationships with the kind of talent he has successfully advocated in he past,” Stoff said. Alvarado starts the new career track July 19.

I HAVE KNOWN JAIRO FOR OVER 15 YEARS. WE WENT TO THE SAME SCHOOL ALL THE WAY UP TO SENIOR YEAR IN HIGH SCHOOL. HE WAS ALWAYS AN ”
A” STUDENT AND WORKED VERY HARD IN EVERYTHING HE DID! HAS ALWAYS BEEN INTERESTED IN FILM, AND VERY GOOD AT IT TOO! I AM VERY PROUD OF ALL HIS ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND I KNOW THERE ARE MANY MORE TO COME. WE ARE FROM THE SAME HUMBLE NEIGHBORHOOD WHICH MEANS THAT HE IS NOT RELATED TO ANYONE AT WB, THEREFORE, CONFIRMING THAT HE DID EVERYTHINGON HIS OWN!! GOOD JOB JAIRO!! KEEP IT UP!!!
After having known the guy for almost 6 years now, I can tell you that this job didn’t just fall in his lap. Look through his bio, past accomplishments, and the talent he’s helped WB find over the past few years, and it becomes pretty apparent that it was his work ethic and talent that got him where he is. I remember many times when he spent several days without sleeping to make the impossible happen. The guy’s talented and determined; 3Arts is lucky to have him. It’s an incredible story to be sure, but don’t tear the kid down simply because he’s earned an opportunity that hasn’t been presented to some of the critics on this page…
PS: For all intents and purposes, we should probably throw the “who did he sleep with” card out the window; he’s too hairy to pick up an exec.
AMAZING. And so true. Jairo is far too hairy. To anyone that has every been lucky enough to meet or talk to Jairo, it is clear that he is driven and incredibly bright. He really knows his stuff. Not only does he rely on commons sense decision-making, but he has also done his homework and knows the industry inside and out. I have no doubt that he will succeed in any film-related job that he comes across.
KEEP IT UP, JAIRO!!
FOR ALL YOU PEOPLE THAT have negative comments to say… YOU ARE ALL WRONG!!! This 24 year old had been in this industry since he was 9 years old.. He has always loved film.. And Yes he worked his ASS off!! He has a great mind and attitude and is respected by lots of executives in the industry. His parents have always told him SI SE PUEDE!!! and to hold his head high when there are humans out there that want to put him down. He learned that hard work pays off! Its not whether you know someone or have connections Believe it or not there are people out there that work hard and are great achievers and never give up on their dream!! Jairo keep believing in yourself and you will achieve!!! CONGRATS!!!
Oh my god, you guys are all the most pathetic losers I’ve ever seen in my life. This poor kid. I don’t know this guy. I don’t care about this guy, but everyone on this chain needs to really get a life.
How about the 40 year old writer guy. Oh my god. Almost lost it.
I don’t know Jairo either, but for the sake of a few highly talented writers-I-know-who-need-a-break I now WANT to, and soon. Sounds like the guy’s got his act together, which is always a good quality but is especially rare in someone so young. Hopefully he can grow to be a wise old fart and retain some of whatever he has that has landed him in these positions NOW without succumbing to embitterment or complete douchbaggery along the way; fingers crossed.
And I’m in agreement with everyone who pointed out that merely having connections isn’t the end game but is just a starting point; regardless of where you enter the fray, to actually move forward and succeed at some point most of us need to actually do the WORK – and it seems like he has, so cheers to that.
I know Jairo professionally. He’s a great guy & people should be happy he got a shot at Warner Bros & this opportunity at 3 Arts. He was given a scholarship out of HS that Warner Bros. sponsored. During his time at UClA he interned in a bunch of departments at WB. He made a tremendous impression, got to sit down with some very high ranking executives, & was able to get a CE job at a very young age. He was given a shot & didn’t have to be an assistant. He didn’t have some magic hookup, he wasn’t someone’s kid, & didn’t have to endure being an assistant. Let’s be honest, there are no real training programs for the most part & doing the CE job at 24 or 34 doesn’t make a difference. The only difference are the relationships you make, which don’t matter much when you work at WB b/c every agent/manager is your best friend anyway. The guy was given an opportunity, impressed the right people, & made the most of it. He has a passion for the business & I’m sure he’ll have an interesting transition from CE to Manager.
For all the people hating on this guy, realize that this industry on the development side is not about talent. It’s very subjective. Sitting there as an assistant isn’t really building any skill sets. It’s about building trust with the execs, that’s it. Life isn’t fair, especially in this industry. This guy got a shot, took the ball, & ran with it. It doesn’t take a genius to make fing CLASH OF THE TITANS, JONAH HEX, or the 20 other bombs out there. Some other guy got a shot b/c he answered a phone well, fed his boss’s ego, & played the game. So people hating on Jairo should just be happy a person got a shot without having to endure 8 years of being an asst. He obviously didn’t make it to the top of WB, but guess what, very few do. Now he can do something more entrepreneurial & hopefully grow talent he has an investment in.
first off, this kid did not go to film school. He has a degree in history. He has be been working toward this since grade school. Everyone he has meet, he did by himself. If you want a back story google him. You will find everything he has worked for he did on his own.
I know Jairo personally, from back when he was in college. Trust me, he did not “know” anyone, he’s just a very talented and likable guy that WB felt that they could give him the job
Sometimes the system works… A scholarship kid has early success. The bitterness here is wasted energy.
I’d guess that he works hard and is clearly smart, incisive and impressive in person.
Reminds me of De Luca. Look forward to his continued success and to meeting this manchild myself.
This is one of the great paradoxes of Hollywood: Everyone tries so hard to work within the established channels of “making it” (even at the expense of taking some great opportunities), yet still has this bullshit sense of entitlement.
I entered the business at 23 and was an agent by 25. This is attributable to two things:
I have little enough respect for this industry that I didn’t care about following the proper protocols and formula and I never failed to capitalize on a significant opportunity when it came my way, even if on its face it didn’t appear to be such.
As someone who knows Jairo I can confidently tell you there’s no back story. He earned it. As an intern, he was curious and ambitious and people recognized his drive was worth the investment. He didn’t have to intern at every department, he chose to because he wanted to understand the business from every angle. He is forward thinking, intelligent, articulate, and hungry. If your confused because you’ve been an assistant 4+ years and have yet to be promoted… it’s your own fault. Make your own opportunities, no one is going to hand them to you.
It’s true he was awarded a Warner Bros. REACH honorship, a college scholarship along with multiple internships while he was a student at UCLA. He showed great promise as a student and he applied for and was selected to be part of the REACH Program. He went through 4 rigorous summer internships at Warner Bros. and he worked hard to get where he is. It’s evident that Jairo has always been passionate about the business based on his desire to work in film at such a young age. Jairo fought hard to get where he is and he truly earned his CE job. Way to go Jairo!
To everyone who questions his rather rapid rise: He isn’t related to anyone. Nor has he blackmailed anyone. Its called Affirmative Action, folks. Liberals have this belief that certain racial minorities and some Spanish speakers can’t quite cut the mustard so they knock the bar down are few levels and don’t hold them to the same standards as everyone else. Sad but true I regret to report.
@LA screenwriter:
“simply because the younger generation doesn’t quite have that broader perspective on life yet”
Who are you to judge? Get a life. Ur a loser.
Just because you’ve turned 40 doesn’t mean you’ve lost the touch to know that something is “cool” or “fun”…. You said it, now prove it… Stop being bitter and boring.
Congrats Jairo!!!
