Sidney Kimmel, the schmatta magnate who verged on quitting the movie biz after making a bunch of good indie films that flopped, seems reinvigorated with a new strategy: make every film possible with Katherine Heigl.
Kimmel has joined forces with Lakeshore Entertainment on Adaline, an “epic romance” that will star Heigl, with Andy Tennant directing. This comes as Kimmel and Lakeshore have Heigl set to play bounty hunter Stephanie Plum in One for the Money, with Julie Anne Robinson directing the adaptation of the Janet Evanovich novel, with Lionsgate distributing. Adaline, written by Mills Goodloe and Sal Paskowitz and revised by Allison Burnett, revolves around a beautiful woman who hasn’t aged in 100 years but hasn’t found love, either. She finally meets that guy who might be worth embracing mortality, and all the wrinkles and sagging that comes with it. Anonymous Content’s Steve Golin and Alix Madigan are producing with Kimmel and Lakeshore’s Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi. Heigl, Nancy Heigl and Jim Tauber are exec producers. They hope to shoot early next year.

There already have been too many Katherine Heigl movies.
So she’s basically attempting to become Jennifer Aniston?
Heigl is stunning – absolutely gorgeous woman, and she does have talent; but she (or her agents) are TERRIBLE at picking movies for her.
I respectfully disagree on all counts. Pretty? maybe. But stunning she most certainly is not. And the movies are terrible, yes. But the fact that her reps have found her as much work as they have is a testament to their skill and/or luck, and certainly not her looks or talent.
I am very excited at all the money I am going to save NOT going to these movies!! Katherine Heigl may just be the answer to the recession!
It’s a good strategy! Heigl can deliver if in a decent movie.
I’d rather see the bounty hunter movie. Make her tough, smart, and up against some really bad characters. Sounds a little like “Point of no Return”, doesn”t it.
If anyone can make great comedies it’s Lakeshore – HA!
… see what I did there? That’s funny cause Lakeshore can’t make… oh, never mind.
Too bad that film future exchanges were banned; these two Heigl films would have been huge shorts.
What about my idea for a comedy about a ditzy blonde who becomes a Fox News anchor? We could call it “Sieg Heigl.”
and if she were an anchor with CNN, we could call it “27 Dresses”.
Tom and Gary are great guys, why do they continue to work with this woman?
I don’t care about her public persona mainly because I don’t know how much of the badmouthing is actually true.
What I DO know is that purely based on her work
a) she can sell a movie with the right studio behind it (27 dresses, The Ugly Truth)
b) she can make a bad movie watchable with her energetic, likeable screen presence(27 dresses)
c) she can act her ass off with the right material (Grey’s Anatomy Season 2 and Season 5)
d) she has the talent and versatility to excel both drama (GA S02-and S05) and comedy (Knocked Up)
So bottom line : she is talented AND marketable. I’m pretty sure that’s every producer’s dream. And I wouldn’t say she chooses bad projects, I mean let’s face it with the exception of Killers her films were big BO-hits and with Killers the studio is the one to blame, not the stars (Lionsgate can only sell horror flicks and Tyler Perry-movies). And the future seems rather bright, if you ask me :
- Life as we know it – even if it won’t impress the critics, it could still be a decent holiday-performer…it could do ‘Stepmom’ numbers
- One for the money – seems fun and different from her previous roles
- Adaline – epic romance ? she will NAIL the role AND SELL the film
- Escape – I have a good feeling about that one….in the “MonsterFrozenRiverChangelingMonstersBall” way
And she is drop dead gorgeous, I don’t get how someone doesn’t see that…
I had just composed a reply to the naysayers and then Phantom came along and wrote everything I was going to say. Good for him. Good for Katharine. She IS drop-dead gorgeous and very talented and she has a very enviable track record.
Dear Nancy Heigl: It’s okay to defend your daughter, just a little less gilding the lilly next time.
Gypsy: this type of joke is already way toooo old. get a life.
Wow, that was very idiotic. Khm…..I’m a twentysomething male, not a momager. But if that’s all you can come up with to prove your point, you pretty much said it all…
Was this partnership started during a discussion between two moguls at a “I trusted in MGM and got screwed support group”
Just wondering….
Let me start by saying, I’ve read most Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum books. Although they are definitely getting repetitive (16 books so far and going strong) the first few are really funny and enjoyable, albeit light, reads. Certainly other fans of the series have to agree that Heigl is COMPLETELY wrong for the role of Stephanie Plum?! She’s supposed to be a sexy, tough, curvy, very Italian (yet not sleazy guidette) with big Jersey hair. I really don’t see blonde, bright-eyed, perky rom-com robot Heigl pulling this off. Looks like another book that is going to be destroyed in the screen adaptation….much like Rob Pattinson being cast as the nerdy, Polish, red-headed virginal hero Jacob in Water for Elephants. WTF?!
Although looking at IMDB, casting the very sexy Daniel Sunjata as Ranger could work out nicely, even though I always pictured a ripped Antonio Banderas type guy.
Sorry, I meant I’ve read most *of* Evanovich’s books..
She is a disaster… She burned a bridge with Apatow and was a train wreck to work with on her last two films… Stop giving her jobs people, we don’t want anymore…..
ANDY TALENTLESS teams with Heil Heigl. Why bother to put film in the camera?
Andy Talentless? Wow what a joke you made. Like a high school kid. Anna @ the King was made by a director who is certainly not talentless. wonder what you did in your life?
It seems people enjoyed working with her on “The Ugly Truth.” Director Robert Luketic immediately reteamed with her for “Killers.”
Yes, having read ALL of the Plum books, I’d have to agree – Heigl as Plum would be a disaster. Even if she were a uniquely good actress, which I don’t believe she is, she is simply all wrong.
And if one doesn’t want to make it about her alleged talent, then just imagine Bradley Whitford as Jason Bourne, Sylvester Stallone as RP McMurphy, and maybe Selena Gomez in “Basic Instinct” as Catherine Trammell
I expect it will be a decade before Plum will ever have another chance at the screen, because stars, studios and audiences will steer clear of the character BECAUSE of the stain I’m willing to bet Heigl’s version would leave on the character.
I can only hope the picture falls apart before the damage is done.
What next? Ricky Gervais as Lee Childs’ “Jack Reacher?” Michael Connelly’s Det. Harry Bosch starring Martin Short, because Short just LOVES the books, and maybe a screen adaptation of “West Wing” with President Jed Bartlett played by Megan Fox?
