Yesterday’s much-hyped edition of The View with President Barack Obama drew the largest audience ever in the history of the ABC’s daytime talk show. The program, which also featured the return of co-host Barbara Walters from heart surgery, was watched by 6.6 million viewers. The View‘s previous audience record was 6.2 million, logged on the day after the 2008 Presidential Election, which was won by Obama.
“A historic interview leads to historic ratings,” said Brian Frons, President, Daytime, Disney/ABC Television Group. “It was wonderful to have Barbara Walters back for the interview with President Barack Obama, her first interview since her heart surgery, and together all five co-hosts did what they do best, ask the questions that are on our viewers’ minds.”
In the interview, President Obama was quizzed about Chelsea Clinton’s wedding, Mel Gibson’s outbursts, Lindsay Lohan’s jail sentence and Jersey Shore star Snooki.

Um. Also, Afghanistan, the economy, Kagan, etc. It was actually a fairly substantive hour in terms of the questions asked. I think both the show, as well as the President, defied expectations. The media seems to have focused on the “fluff” stuff, but at least a half an hour of the show was dedicated to policy questions – and the president did a great job of speaking accessibly about them. He just signed the Tribal Law Act today, btw. Love my president.

Oh yes what a great guy. Go on the View to field softball questions and rehash talking points for an hour? As any poll will show you, he’s lost touch with his “base” and any other neutral observer who elected him…this was a desperation grab to try and get his female base back, nothing more.

Can’t speak for “Doc”, but I saw it and Doc’s right. I can NOT believe I voted for this. I realize there’s a sucker born every minute, but it’s depressing to truly believe in something when you/we need it the most only to watch it fizzle away into this. Bring on the “I told you so’s”.

I cannot believe people. When Pres Bush was in and he gave away the store no body had a thing to say. Pres Obama was elected to try and fix the mess and no matter what he says or does there is a problem. I guess more people are more unhappy than I thought and they have to blame someone for their misery. I think he did a great job with the pot of rotten mess he was handed to make soup of. Hilary would have been in the same boat. This was a hard pill and we, Americans, need some patience.
I’m just amazed at the criticism that President Obama has undergone — he has to undo the damage that he inherited from an 8 year Bush Administration — which by the way no one complained about — even when gas prices reached close to 4.00 per gallon. This is President Obama’s first year in office, give him a break and a chance.

Bush was handed a surplus and he decided to get us bogged down in these pointless wars trying to “liberate” people who didn’t even want to be liberated. His choices have already cost us over $1 trillion and will likely cost another 2 or 3 trillion by the time we can end those fakakta wars (if ever) and let those people handle their own security problems. On top of this, the fact that he borrowed recklessly to fund these wars has resulted in the devaluation of our currency.

This is like ‘who are you going to believe, me or your lying eyes?’ You don’t have to like Fox, but their programming strategy has worked – any one of their weekday evening shows beats any other cable show, and some network shows, by large numbers. And if you are a programmer or a sponsor, its not what everybody ‘knows’ but what everybody is watching that counts. You are not going to beat Fox by making stupid and easily disproved statements – you beat them with better programming and so far no cable network has been able to do that.

I have no problem with the President going on the View if he wants to. But remember, people go on these talk shows in order to sell something. President Obama must be feeling pretty desperate to be spending his time trying to sell himself, rather than doing his job. It shows the elections are going to be interesting. Obama should expect a spike in his poll numbers for the mentally-challenged demo after appearing on “the View”. Sherri Sheppard thinks that the world is flat and Joy Behar has a beaver on her head; not surprising that they would think that Obama is doing a good job.
