EXCLUSIVE: Veteran TV producer Bert Salke has been tapped as president of Fox21, the cable/unscripted production arm of 20th Century Fox TV. He replaces Chris Carlisle who is exiting after a year-and-a-half stint. Salke, who is expected to start in mid-August, will report to 20th TV chairmen Dana Walden and Gary Newman.
For the past 13 years, Salke had been partnered with producer Chris Brancato in Brancato/Salke. The company was based at 20th TV from 2003-2005 before moving to ABC Studios (then Touchstone TV) where the two had been based until their most recent deal expired in mid-June. But Salke started off as an executive before segueing to producing, holding gigs at Twentieth Century Fox under Scott Rudin and at Lorimar and FBC under Peter Chernin. Because of that background, Salke had been approached for executive jobs before but said “the right one never came along” until he was asked to run Fox21.
Newman and Walden launched Fox21 in 2004 as a division for alternative and lower-cost scripted series. “I think it’s a different world today than when it was created,” Salke said. “They are now a prime supplier of prime cable programming but I think the company has not reached its potential, and there are branding questions. We’re going to aim high for event-type attention-grabbing programming.” The model would be parent studio 20th TV, which has shows like Glee and Modern Family, he said. Salke said happy with the 3 series on Fox21’s current slate, Sons of Anarchy, his favorite series on TV, and the upcoming Shawn Ryan/Ted Griffin FX drama Terriers and Breakout Kings, which was developed by 20th TV but laid off at Fox21 when it moved from Fox to A&E.
When their pact at ABC Studios was coming up last month, Brancato and Salke were approached with overall deal offers, including one by ABC Studios but, looking at the direction the TV business was going in the era of vertical integration, they felt it was time to try something new. In the past 5 years, they sold 36-37 drama scripts through their ABC Studios deal, all to ABC. They were prolific pilot makers (this past development season alone, they executive produced two cop drama pilots, Boston’s Finest and True Blue) but had no shows on the air, and Brancato had been hankering to return to showrunning. He went on to join the midseason Fox/20th TV drama Terra Nova. Meanwhile, Salke said he loved running a company (their pod was one of the bigger ones in TV production) but was looking to “broaden my horizons: I’m interested in comedy and super interested in reality.” Salke continues to be very close with Brancato and plans to work with him very soon, a real possibility now that Brancato works for a 20th TV-produced series and is also expected develop for the studio. Also working for 20th TV is Salke’s wife, the studio’s EVP Jennifer Nicholson Salke, but Salke said he made sure beforehand there would be no overlap between their duties. “It was made clear to me that there is not much crossover if any,” he said. “If this was a job that entailed a lot of crossover, I wouldn’t have taken it. We want to keep things separate.”
For Carlisle, a former top marketing executive, the Fox21 job marked the first production executive position. He presvously served as president of domestic theatrical marketing for New Line and also headed marketing for Fox and FX. It is unclear what his immediate plans are. Before Carlisle joined Fox21 in 2008, the unit had been headed by Jane Francis, who stayed on as SVP of creative affairs under Carlisle and will also do so under Salke.

Finally, a more suitable gig for Salke…
Now he can get out of Chris’ way.
So what’s the deal with Calumzuck’s Fox Television Studios. Isn’t that cable/unscripted arm of 20th Century Fox TV???? Two divisions that do the same thing….does that make sense?
That does it. I’m retiring from show business.
So the husband is overseeing basic cable for Fox-FX and the wife is in charge of Fox broadcasting? Interesting.
Ok got all that. Worked with Carlisle at Fox great guy, where is he going? Was that mentioned?
Glad to see that Jane is staying… smart and totally bullshit-free exec.
good going, chris! this has always been a determined and quality guy.
i’ve known him since his mailroom days at wma and he deserves what he’s worked so hard to get.
i meant, “good going, BERT!”
So, here’s my question: These guys who are seemingly so valuable that they have numerous years of overall deals at 20th, then at ABC Studios, guys who’ve sold 37 DRAMA PILOTS, why don’t they have a single show on the air? What is keeping them employed? Is there a track record I’m not seeing? Or, is this really a story about how someone at ABC Studios finally figured that out, and there’s no studio out there that wants to make a deal with them now, so they’re having to split up and rustle up their own jobs? Am really wondering.
welcome to television. same names recycled year after year after failure after failure. executives looking out for each other, welcome!
the oh-for-series record they’ve accumulated is a testament to the development process at abc under its current leader
Bert’s business sense is super sharp, he’s one of the few guys out there who’s just as comfortable with execs and agents as he is with writers and producers. Good for Fox21, good for writers.
Chris and Bert have for years been the two of the best story guys and producers in town. Not a lot of guys closer to more talented writers than they are, and there’s a reason. They are yet again strong talents who were absolutely mis-managed by the genius 0f Mcpherson and Co, Good get Twentieth, maybe now that division will do something,
Paul Andserson/Salke pilot DRIFT at ABC was one of the best non-ordered pilots I’ve ever seen. Still scratching my head as to how that thing didn’t go.
Smart guys. Probably shoulda stayed together.
Bert is one of the good guys. Good things to come…
Brncato/Salke did a pilot of “Football Wives” that was amazing. Unfortunately the NFL told ABC not to buy the series.
The pilot was awful! Poor writing, directing, acting, over shot, terrible story lines, confusing and on and on. They had the chance with a great premise and format and went south fast.
Bert is one of the hardest working people in this business. he’s smart and knows what he’s talking about. good get for them!
Bert Salke and Chris Brancato are awesomely talented writer-producers and terrific guys to boot. Not many producers have produced at least one (sometimes more than one) pilot every season for 12 years. While it’s true that most of the pilots did not go to series, the majority had great potential. Bert will do really well in this job. Fox 21 is so lucky to have him and TERRA NOVA is fortunate to have Chris as well. I hope they find ways to work together again because they are really a great team.
“the majority had great potential” classic.
you’re an idiot.
Jane is the best exec they have, 20th or F21.
Which begs the question, why does she stay? That job should have been hers right?
“While it’s true most of the pilots did not go to series…”
Heh. I think the correct answer is none of them did. They’re sorta the Cal Ripkens of this particular circumstance.
It’s simple… Chris Brancato is a truly great writer/showrunner/television guy in general. That’s what kept getting them deals.
Brancato without salke= no overall for brancato. Unless of course Bert gives him one. It’s Hollywood, right?
love jane. bert is a hack and everyone knows it.
The comment section at Deadline has gotten ridiculous. Sure, it’s fun for the cowards to anonymously put down everyone who gets the assignment they wish they had or the job they’ll never get. Entertaining Internet fun. But it’s turned into the only thing the Internet truly does well–porn. None of it means anything. But TV Person, you’re right. Jane Francis has been at the company for years and Fox 21 sucks. Salke sold more pilots than that company has pitched. Corporations just give away presidencies for fun. Very easy to say whatever anyone wants behind a computer screen. Probably a given that Fox 21 has it’s best and most relevant year, and that Salke will get bored of the small playing field. But more importantly, Nikki, if you want this site to be the true journalistic endeavor you claim to aspire to, isn’t it time to impose some rules regarding Posting? Or is this simply like everything else in Hollywood and just about the hook?
It is annoying that people post negative and derogatory comments behind the shield of anonymity. And NY Clarity: I agree that there should be rules for Posting, but Deadline will never do it, because then people would have to post their real names and the number of comments would plummet. Sad though it may be, much of the traffic to this website comes from people wanting to vent their frustration at a very frustrating business and pursue their own personal vendettas.
