EXCLUSIVE: One week before CBS’ hit The Big Bang Theory is scheduled to go back into production on Season 4, I hear the main cast is still nowhere near a deal in their salary renegotiations with producing studio Warner Bros. TV. But actors, at least most of them, are expected to report to work when filming starts next Wednesday as their contracts stipulate.
I hear the studio went to the 3 stars of the show, Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki and Kaley Cuoco, about a month ago with an offer for $100,000 an episode. While that is a sizable bump from what the trio most recently made (around $60,000 an episode), that number is way lower than the $250,000 per episode range that has been speculated about by industry insiders given Big Bang’s high ratings, its importance to CBS as a new Thursday 8 PM anchor and mostly because of the show’s recent record-breaking syndication sale by Warner Bros. of $2M+ per episode.
I hear the reps for the actors didn’t respond to the offer, leading to 3 weeks of radio silence between the two camps. The silence was broken a couple of days ago, following Comic-Con where the Big Bang cast was among the most popular attractions and heading into start of production next Wednesday and CBS’ TCA presentation today. I hear it was WBTV that reached out to the actors and there has been some back-and-forth but no new money offer is on the table. I hear complicating things is the fact that Parsons has separated himself from the others as he reportedly pursues a bigger paycheck. (He, Galecki and Cuoco continue to be represented by the same law firm, Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren & Richman. (As I stated before when that was only a possibility, I believe the three actors can accomplish a lot more if they stick together the way the Friends cast did years ago.) From what I hear, while not specific, talks between the two sides are pretty civil and there could be a breakthrough before Aug. 4. If not, negotiations are expected to continue while the actors are working. That would be in contrast to the case with the Friends cast who demanded salary increases to about $100,000 each per episode after the first two seasons and threatened to boycott production of Season 3 episodes if they didn’t get what they wanted. They eventually did.
The Big Bang cast took a light approach when asked about the state of renegotiations at the show’s TCA panel today.
“I don’t think any of us really even know what’s going on,” Cuoco said. “We have people that help us with that and take care of it. I mean, I’m doing next season for free. I don’t know about you guys. I just figure it would make things a lot easier,” she said, drawing laughs from the audience. “But, no, we all have people behind the scenes that we pay to take care of this so we won’t have to deal with it. And I think it will all be find in the end. This is just the way it goes.”
Added Parsons: “My people work for free,” leading to another zinger, this one from co-star Kunal Nayyar: “I don’t have any people.” (Nayyar and Simon Helberg are also expected to renegotiate their deals, probably after Parsons, Galecki and Cuoco complete theirs.)
Also at TCA today, CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler was optimistic that “things will work out” the way they did on another WBTV-produced comedy series, Two and a Half Men, which recently went through negotiations with star Charlie Sheen. The Big Bang situation is actually less complicated because the actors are under existing contracts whereas Sheen’s deal was up.

Parsons is getting a big head. While he is a great actor and the role of Sheldon is hysterical, it would be bland without the back and forth between all of them – especially Kaley and Johnny.
I don’t begrudge Parsons getting all the money he can, while he can. He will be typecast forever as Sheldon. To me, he’s another Urkel; and what has that guy been doing – other than allegedly battering women.
All of them deserve more than what they are being offered. Parsons makes the show, especially his interactions with Kaley. If CBS gave into Charlie Sheen for the absurdly high number he wanted, then they can give the BBT cast what they want. BBT is one of the best shows on TV and is funny unlike Two and a Half Men.
Well, consider . . .
If CBS is making $2M an episode in syndication, not to mention all the front-end money, then $300K for the three of them is a paltry sum by comparison — a proverbial drop in the bucket. The three stars each are at least worth $250K, if not more as the brand continues to build.
Incidentally, Parsons is no Urkel. Urkel was a manufactured, stereotypical nerd, while with Sheldon, Parsons is basically playing himself on super-nerd steroids. He has a great deal more range than that. Besides, Parsons is a Shakespearean actor — he’s got chops, and more range than you give him credit for.
Oops, I missed the bit about Parsons separating himself from the others . . . not a wise move (assuming that that is indeed the case). It’s their chemistry that makes the show work . . . I would think it would also give them the best deal.
If he can get the money, good for him. But he’ll have to deal with his fellow leads eventually, and I imagine they aren’t happy about him breaking away.
If the “cast” of Jersey Shore can get $100k per episode, then BIG BANG cast deserves waaaaay more! At least they have talent!
Seconded!
Thirded!!!
Fourthed!
Infinitted!
Jersey Shore cast makes 10K per episode, not 100K.
Really, since when is acting like a guy with aspergers’ equate to talent?
At least an episode of Jersey Shore always makes me laugh a few times- seriously, Ronnie making out with a couple grenades in a hot tub is 100k talent in my book.
While I don’t watch or care for BBT or ‘Jersey Shore,’ I echo the above sentiment of ‘smokegurl.’ These kids *have* to be more worthy of decent salary than the “stars” on the joke of a Jersey ‘reality’ show. Well, Cuoco at the very least
Also think they should have stuck together for negotiations.
I may have watched a different TCA conference, but in the one I say it was Helberg who made the comment about not having any people.
They’ve earned it. This show is a hit and they’re all uber talented!
Parsons might never work after this role. All the other 4 will have shots at getting at least supporting roles in movies, or different Sitcoms. This might be it for Parsons. He needs to get his while he can. I think he would do better do negotiate as a block, but he can’t afford to leave any money on the table.
Parsons is on a film now…THE BIG YEAR….
Jim Parsons is the Tony Randall of this generation – he needs to find him self a game show gig to guest appear on.
Um, aren’t these people under contract already?
As a former agent, I can strongly believe that Parsons deserves to to get more money than any of the cast. Dear gawd….if that wife beating, drug addled, hot tempered, loser Charlie Sheen can get over 500K per episode, Jim Parson deserves twice that much because of his superb physical comedy. The man is like rubber — those facial expression— he’s another Jim Carey. He is right to be negotiating on his own….
Unlike Friends in which each actor had the same limited talent— Jim’s talent far exceeds any of the other cast members. The rest of the cast deliver their lines brilliantly and Kaley’s comedic timing is superb but there is no doubt that Jim is the star of this show.
Somebody on this post mentioned that he is the Tony Randall of this era. He remind me of Felix from The Odd Couple. I think they do deserved more but 100K sounds good, I mean how much money do they need.
Ah, to be young, talented, appreciated … and working.
Yes, what a problem to have in this economy!
Jim Parsons is making a lot of people a lot of money so there is nothing wrong with him trying to maximize his paycheck.
His talent, however, is not limited to Sheldon and while not the most traditional of actors, he will have a fine career doing whatever he chooses to do when this show is over. Hopefully, he will have pulled in enough money from BBT to have the freedom to do whatever he cares to do.
Anyone who thinks he is comparable to Urkel sees only the most surface of similarities between two different characters and hasn’t a clue how to spot legitimate talent.
I think they should pay Kaley Cuoco anything she wants. Seriously.
I could foresee Parsons ending up someday in a supporting role on a crime procedural. Like a lab geek on a show like BONES or a featured (not starring) role on a CSI-like show…
I love BBT and Two…Men. Pay them what they are worth at least 500K. It has been a while since I have enjoyed an intelligent television show. I think they are all worth the money. Kelly Cuomo and Jim Parsons make the show but I love the way Johnny Galecki balances those two character’s and their quirks; the personalities would be annoying if it were just those two. I love all that Galecki puts up with in Parsons character.
Sheldon is so out there in nerd land and without the other characters he would go crazy and have to be committed otherwise. The writers are excellent to be able to show a balance in so many characters.
All I can do is rave about this show. SO FUNNY! Show them the money!
I ALWAYS watch The Big Bang, it is the best comedy show on TV.
Two and a half men isn’t in the same league as this show.
All the actors on Big Bang are great and sooo funny.
They all should get a Big salary increase. Sheldon is my favoite, but all the cast members make this a “to watch” show.
