SUNDAY AM: Since my weekend box office report puts all its emphasis on the big moneymakers, I want to give smaller movies some love (or hate). Beginning today, I’ll post a separate wrapup for limited releases:
Focus Features released its Julianne Moore/Annette Bening/Mark Ruffalo starring dramedy The Kids Are All Right to the highest per screen average so far this year, $72,127 for 7 theaters (3 in NYC, and 1 location each in LA, SF, Chicago and Toronto), ahead of Ghost Writer and Cyrus. It made $143K ($20,483 per screen average) Friday, and $199K ($28,563 per screen average) Saturday for an estimated opening weekend gross of $504K. Focus said Kids’ +39% increase from Friday to Saturday was driven not only by sell-out prime evening shows, but also by matinees which were also sold out in most markets. The venues were a mix of both smart house and commercial theaters, so these numbers bode well for Kids‘ expansion set for 11 new markets next weekend broadening to 34 engagements.
Music Box Films capitalized on the $100+M big screen success of Stieg Larsson’s worldwide bestselling novel The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo by releasing the 2nd in his crime thriller series, The Girl Who Played With Fire in the U.S. and Canada this weekend. Playing in 110 locations, it made $965K this weekend, finishing in the 11th spot of all movies this weekend, for a per screen average of $8,777. I hear all screenings sold out in LA. Music Box plans to bow The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest on October 15th. Sony Pictures is giving Larsson’s trilogy the Hollywood treatment.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

Nice that finally Sweden exports some stuff to United States, but i’ll have to say that they could choose to focus more on “Easy Money” (“Snabba Cash” in swedish) to make a remake of that one, but that’s just my opinion.
hey, IKEA??
Excellent! I’m really excited to see this feature added. A lot of tiny indie releases get completely ignored by the press, even when they do well. The added visibility afforded by Deadline could really help increase their visibility. Thanks so much for adding this!
Absolutely agree. LOVE this idea, Finke. Let’s remind ourselves that it’s not all about the event-driven stuff.
Love the new feature, Nikki. Danke schoen.
The Kids Are Alright deserves every single penny. Such a refreshing change from the shit the studios are churning out. And those strange creatures in the movie are almost unrecognizable – oh that’s right – they’re actors.
Audiences are starved for human stories. Ensemble comedies, dramas.
Winter’s Bone, by the way, just by viewing the trailer, is very appealing to smart people who live in, well, America. The heartland, the south, parts of the pacific northwest, etc. People who are bright, read the reviews, recognize that it’s the big hit from Sundance, will turn out when they see representations of themselves. Including indies about rich people. It’s all about the script with these pics.
I’m so excited for this movie! It’s a rare thing to sit through trailers at a theater these days and feel that way about an upcoming movie for adults.
Good to see this Nikki. Thanks!
Agreed – thanks for adding this.
Very happy to read this about Kids.
Annette Bening and Julianne Moore are in dire need of an Oscar and Mark Ruffalo is in dire need of his first nomination.
This is great! Nikki- I’m really glad you added this separate section for indies.
Easily my favorite post of yours ever. Way to give props to people fighting for their films.
you heard wrong, the 9:50pm Saturday night showing of “Girl…” at the Landmark in West Los Angeles was not sold out, about 75% full.
Glad you’re adding this feature, Nikki.
These movies might not draw in the big numbers, but they’re certainly part of the ecology of movies. Often, they’re the reason I go to the movies.
This is new feature is a great idea. Thank you!
Looking forward to seeing The Kids Are All Right. Fantastic cast.
Borrrrriiiiiing.
Who cares?
Yeiiiii! NOw, lets have a party with Woody Allen and Morgan Freeman!!!
Let us keep hurting children!! …and keep being rich and famous at tha same time!!
Nikke does it again! Did I really need another reason to read this website??
Was at an evening show of Kids in Chicago last night and every seat was packed….in fact some people sat in the aisles.
REALLY great movie for grownups and people with a brain. It’s one of those movies you’ll pick apart in your brain for a week….
I read the first book and I have the second. I would honestly love to see both films but limited releases don’t get this far in the southeast especially forign films.
nice to see reporting on the indie releases. thanks. i saw “Dragon tattoo” on saturday nite at second run culver city cinema. pretty crowded for a 9:30 show.
This is a great idea. Wont want to miss a movie like “The Hurt Locker” in your coverage again.
Thanks Nikki. I only can dream that one day these types of films will be the major releases instead of limited. Real films like the 70′s.
Thank you.
Being in publishing I had read the manuscripts early and knew the plan. It is so refreshing to see import style being recognized, even by you! Love the film noir aspect of this trilogy. “Scary stuff”
I agree. Not all Girl screenings were sold out. Certainly not the 7PM show at The Arclight on Friday night. That one was also at 75 to 80% full. The film was good but not as good as Dragon. However, it will satisfy your Stieg appetite. Hey Nikki, are you getting a batch of IKEA gift cards for that full house comment? LOL.
Adding a weekly limited release wrap up is the best thing I’ve heard in months. With theaters dominated by bad remakes and sequels, the only hope for unique voices is in this extremely squeezed sector- kudos to KIDS and WINTER’S BONE, the best two American films of the year.
