UPDATED: Some 2.3 million subscribers in the country may lose AMC next week, just days before the Season 4 premiere of the network’s flagship drama Mad Men, which returns July 25. Broadband TV operator AT&T U-verse could drop Rainbow Media’s AMC, WE tv and IFC when the companies’ current carriage deal expires at midnight on July 14 unless a new agreement is reached. AT&T and Rainbow had been negotiating unsuccessfully for the past six months on a new contract to replace their previous one, which expired on July 1. The two sides agreed to a two-week extension but are now at an impasse. Rainbow has started notifying its viewers about the possibility of its 3 channels going dark on AT&T systems. “AT&T is acting in an aggressive manner that puts their corporate interests ahead of their customers,” AMC said in a statement. “We are negotiating in good faith with AT&T and are hopeful that we can reach an agreement as soon as possible so that our viewers don’t lose out.”
Meanwhile, AT&T argued that AMC’s demands are unreasonable. “Based on aggregate data we obtained from third party industry sources and our own subscribers, some of the Rainbow channels are among the least-watched and most overpriced per viewer compared to other major programming providers,” an AT&T spokeswoman said. “They’re also trying to force the renegotiation of a contract for one of their other channels that is not yet expired and force us to carry a new channel that wasn’t even formally presented to us until after the recent July 1 contract extension. We want our customers to know that we can’t and won’t give in to unreasonable deals that unfairly disadvantage our customers.”
The news comes a day after Mad Men scored 17 Emmy nominations, and AMC netted a total of 26 noms, the most for any basic cable network. Such carriage disputes have become more and more common, and having a blue-chip program at stake has helped the network threatened by yanking so far. The possibility of millions of Fox viewers missing the New Year’s college bowl games pushed through a new carriage agreement with Time Warner, while ABC went dark on Cablevision for only a few hours before it was restored 20 minutes into the network’s Oscar telecast. While Mad Men doesn’t have the wide appeal of college football or the Academy Awards, it is still a marquee cable series with devoted following.

If AT&T drops AMC ahead of Mad Men, I’m changing to Direct TV.

We might as well throw our tv out of the window if you get rid of these channels. There really won’t be anything worthwhile watching. We really enjoy all of the movies on AMC and IFC. PLEASE KEEP THESE CHANNELS RUNNING……
keep we tv on. I love this ststion
yes please keep these stations on.
we tv is one of my favorite stations please keep it on.
does this mean on Uverse?! I’m drafting an angry letter now!
Just like their phone service, consider AT&T Dropped!
I hate when companies like this attempt to hold networks hostage to finagle more money.
Before you switch to Direct TV, keep in mind, Direct TV doesn’t have AMC in HD. What’s that all about? Cable does. And Direct TV advertises that they have the most channels in HD, etc. Do we really need 17 channels of nature programs in HD and NOT Don Draper?
Absolutely pissed. IFC and AMC? What do you think my DVR is chock full of?
If they pull these channels, I will be pulling a significant amount of my bill (if not all of it). Why pay for channels I’m not getting anymore?
Oh, boy. Another day, another network v. cable/satellite distributor dispute.
Of course, all of these issues could be solved SO simply and SO much more fairly to the consumer. Here’s a novel idea: instead of forcing consumers to purchase “bundles” of channels the way every single provider that I know of does, why not charge a fee per channel?? I know it’s just SUCH a revolutionary idea to only charge people for the channels that they actually watch…
That way, the average consumer would win because their overall cable/satellite bill would go way down (how many channels do you actually regularly watch? 20? 30? What if you paid $1-2 each?). The Providers would win in the same manner that capitalists always insist they will: the free market will determine who offers the best service for the best price. And the networks would win because, if a show wasn’t performing, they wouldn’t waste money producing it (which then leads them to pass the costs along to the consumer).
Your “pay per channel” idea reminded me of the sell job cable networks they gave us over two decades ago to woo us away from free broadcasting: “Pay a small fee and you’ll receive programming WITHOUT commercial interruption!”
Well now it’s 20 years later and we are arguing about how much money we should pay for programs that have just as many commercials as the old free TV. Hey, I love AMC, but why should I pay anything at all when these channels are subsidized with advertising? In your model I can see paying for IFC which has no advertising interruptions, but any cable channel such as AMC which is subsidized by AD dollars do not need extra money from us customers.
I think that you need to speak up and tell them that. I LOVE WETV. PLEASE take this into consideration!!!
Good idea. I pay for basic cable but I only watch about 10 channels regularly. I don’t watch all those sports, news or music channels so why should I pay for them in my package.
I am upset … AMC is a wonderful netwok, classic films without four letter words. Superb quality programs! Termination of this programing will terminate all my business with ATT !!!

Don’t forget – Rainbow Media is owned by Cablevision, the people who brought you the great Oscar night blackout. Funny how their story changes when they are on the other side of the table…
I am disabled and stuck at home, thus my uverse channels are very important to me. I may tape three shows and be watching something else and three of the four shows come from WE, IFC, AMC, TNT, all those higher channels. I don’t really care if it is HD I do care if I have the choices,
I think I might actually be coming down on the side of AT&T in this one.
Rainbow thinks the fans are going to rally and force AT&T to bend?
Really? What are Mad Men’s numbers?
What are nitty gritty details of this situation Nellie?
ATT must have seen that sneak preview of Rubicon.
All I will say is the silly 11th hour tactic will be solved and all will be well with the world. Trust me.
Rainbow claims that Mad men garnered 2.8 million viewers at the beginning of the third season, a 33% increase over the previous season start.
Rainbow’s statement that “AT&T is acting in an aggressive manner that puts their corporate interests ahead of their customers” seems extremely believable. While yes, business requires that companies look out for their revenue, AT&T has only developed a very poor reputation for doing this overly much, as a detriment to its customers.
AT&T pulling another stupid move… really doesn’t surprise me. And no, I don’t watch these channels.
What’s Man Men?
Two things you’re not.
Rainbow seems to be the aggressor in this situation. It seems to be a conflict of interest. when their parent company is a competitor. maybe att should cancel all phone calls of rainbow media management in retaliation. Im sure they will reach some kind of deal. if not by the time the extention runs out, with in the next few months. long eoungh that a few att customers bolt or are given deals. a shame rainbow took to broadcasting a message over their network to make it look like att was going to take my channels that are not even on att cable. amc is the only channel they have that i watch, personally i would prefer they just take the rest of their channels to the dump.
It is a sin that AT&T/Uverse is dropping AMC. Comcast is the WORST company in the country and it is a bad business decision for AT&T to join Comcast at the bottom….
This is my favorite channel to watch after a long day at work. I unwind here from a crazy day filled with difficult decisions and impossible deadlines. Don’t take my bit of sanity away.
AMC has 1 network and 3 scraps. I want a la carte. I only want to pay for networks I want on my dial. I won’t have time to watch them either but at least I am not stuck with 8 shopping channels. In Houston we must have 10 Spanish & 5 other foreign language channels. I do not speak a foreign language and if I learn one, it will not be Spanish. I spend 10 seconds per month looking at the pretty women and that is it. The average cable consumers bill would be half of what it is if we could pick our own nets.
The only show i’ve ever had an interest in would be Mad Men, all the other channels are of no interest to me, if AT&T can drop the other 2 channels and lower the price of my bill, i’d be happy
will drop att if att drop entertainment
IFC’s pretty much the little brother I never had. If it gets dropped, God knows how I’ll react. I think AMC’s pretty legit too and I hope something can be worked out.
do not drop we tv or I will be dropping ATT u-verse and going back to comcast
Hmm…wonder just how much public attention this little threat will create for Madmen season 4 premiere & new season? Certainly does create curiosity; add to the mystery of the show’s success, particularly for those who’ve not been viewers thus far. AMC’s been airing every episode from the first 3 seasons – certainly are gearing us up….. Don’t get me wrong – I love Madmen. And AMC. But the timing IS curious.
Who cares about the show mad men! Amc needs to go down in flames, especially if they don’t stop playing commercials so much louder than their content.
