EXCLUSIVE: Circle of Confusion, which is working on its first TV series, AMC’s adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead, is putting together another TV series project based on a comic book, John Layman and Rob Guillory’s Chew. Stephen Hopkins has come on board to direct and executive produce the project, which is in the process of locking in a writer. Chew tells the darkly comic story of federal agent Tony Chu, a “cibopath” able to get psychic impression from the things he eats who is assigned to the most usual and bizarre crimes. “There are a lot of superhero comic books but there are not
many food comic books,” Layman said. “Food turned out to be a very universal theme embraced by readers.” For Layman, who has been writing comic books since 1995, this marks his first original creation and his first success. “It only took 15 years,” he quipped. Layman is celebrating another anniversary this year – he is heading to Comic-Con for the 20th consecutive year, and this time, he will have a table for Chew following the success of the series’ first two volumes. Circle of Confusion’s partners also will be going to Comic-Con, which will feature a panel for Walking Dead on Friday. The company, which represents many comic book writers, also has Powers, a drama project based on the comic by Brian Michael Bendis and Mike Oeming set up at FX. Kevin Falls is attached as showrunner and Michael Dinner as director. Hopkins has directed the pilots for Fox’s 24, Showtime’s Californication and ABC’s The Unusuals.

Good for Layman, but when did Deadline become all puffery? Let’s look at this one by one shall we? Powers has been at F/X for a long ass time so I wouldn’t think this was going to air in my lifetime. All the article says is that they added a showrunner- not a single network not even Epix has bough the thing yet, and based on the subject matter they are not likely to. Hopkins is a nice guy who struck out in the feature world. And Circle Of Confusion are vermin. The Walking Dead will not appeal to a mass tv audience and then goodbye.
wow
Boy – you missed the boat on that one.
only biggest drama ratings ever on AMC for Walking Dead
really looking forward to see what they do with Chew
I think this is great news. Chew is original and fun, and has the potential for something big — perhaps even more so than Walking Dead. I’d love to see this turn into something, maybe at F/X. Hopkins is a good choice on this one too.
it is a bit of a puff piece. They’ve made an attachment. They haven’t SOLD the show yet.
I’ve read a lot of comics in my life. When I first heard Chew’s basic premise I was excited. It sounded like a great idea. However, the execution was just terrible. The jokes weren’t funny. Storyline wasn’t compelling. And when the lead travels to Russia or the North Pole–Why are you telling me this? I hung in there until the end of the first arc and stopped. I tried. The series has a great core idea, appropriate art, but it was so poorly executed I just didn’t care after issue 5. Maybe a TV show will get it right?
First original creation? What about Bay City Jive?
Circle of Confusion is vermin? Please elaborate.
Chew is pretty good, but I think that TV is its proper medium. The world of the CHEW comics gets wilder and more outrageous with every issue but a TV show with a limited budget and production constraints will be able to rein in some of the wilder impulses.
I can see a detective drama based around an empowered FDA with a ‘cibopath’ and his cyborg partner as being very watchable. If they get Javi Grillo-Marxwatch on the show as a producer they could have a genuine hit.
Yes !!! I love Chew, Just One year out and getting its own T.V. Series !!! Amazing, Congrats Layman !!!
How much y’all wanna bet Tony Chu’s gonna magically an conveniently turn white?
I’m really excited by the news. I can’t wait for a Chew television series. I’m hoping Chew will be out by next year.
Ken Leung needs to play Tony Chu.
