SUNDAY, JULY 25
THE SLOW-ASS LAST DAY, a.k.a. “FAMILY DAY”
Luke Y Thompson covers Hollywood events at the Con for Deadline:
10:00-11:00 AM: Emily The Strange. So every year, they promise an announcement of a potential movie deal for this goth-chick fave. This year? Maybe. Or not. Room 3
10:00-11:00 AM: Smallville Screening and Q&A. Apparently, this next season is going to be the final one for the Superman prequel series. I did not know that. Which makes this the last official Comic-Con panel. Some of you might find that important. Plus Tom Welling’s coming. Ballroom 20
10:00-11:00 AM: Sideshow Collectibles. Hey Sideshow: I bought your expensive dolls back when they were around $60. Now that most of them are almost twice that, I can’t. And if you keep this up, I will not care. Just so you know, there’s a recession on. Room 32AB
11:45 AM-12:45 PM: Comic-Con Debut: International Hit Merlin. If my girlfriend were coming to Comic-Con, she’d be first in line for this. If I attend the panel, it will primarily be on her behalf, as I can’t quite understand why this show so drastically rewrites Arthurian legend as to make Merlin a kid serving Prince Arthur. But star Colin Morgan will show up, and I know firsthand that that means a lot to some. Room 6BCF
12:00-2:00 PM: Browncoats Fan Group. Obsessive fans of Joss Whedon’s SERENITY/FIREFLY meet at this thing. I’d advice everyone else to stay far, far away. Room 32AB
12:30-1:15 PM: American Dad. Good morning USA! I’ve got a feeling that it’s gonna be a…Sunday! For my money, this is Seth MacFarlane’s best show in terms of characterization and plot. Dunno if I’m motivated enough to see a whole panel dedicated to it, but they promise to screen a brand-new episode. Ballroom 20
1:30-2:30 PM: Glee. Comedy can be a mixed bag at Comic-Con, but hey, why not try? Jane Lynch isn’t expected, but stars Chris Colfer, Amber Riley, Jenna Ushkowitz, Kevin McHale, Mark Salling, Heather Morris, and Naya Rivera are coming. Exclusive footage will be shown…I don’t actually know or care anything about this show, but it is popular, and sounds like they’re packing this thing with good stuff. Ballroom 20
2:00-3:00 PM: Keenspot 2010…in 3D! Webcomics publisher Keenspot have apparently been coming to Comic-Con for ten years, and now have a 3D feature film in the works entitled SHOCKWAVE DARKSIDE, about a war on the moon, to be directed by Jay Weisman. No idea what any of this means, but it is movie news. Room 4
3:00-4:30 PM: Starship Smackdown XVIII: Ultimate Platinum Collector’s Edition. No Comic-Con is complete without at least a brief stop-in on this panel, in which minutiae-obsessed geeks debate the all-important issues of who would win in a battle between fictional starships. Hilarious and seriously nit-picky nerd level, this must be experienced at least once, though the panel does tend to run long. Room 7AB
And that’s kinda it. Interesting – and significant — to note that this year, for the first time in several years, there are no big movie panels in Hall H on Sunday. Also interesting to note that there are really only two must-see panels in the whole show – Marvel and WB. Yes, TRON would like to be the talk of the town, but they’ve shown stuff at two prior Cons, and people have an idea of what to expect already. Plus no TWILIGHT panel…even though this sold out early, look for casual fans to call it disappointing. And, perhaps, a slower sell-out time next year. Oh, wait, BREAKING DAWN is next year. Never mind.
For me, I’d be happy if the crowds did die down just a tad. And I haven’t mentioned the parties, because if you haven’t been invited yet, you probably won’t get in. If the Con folks were hoping to leverage their negotiating power for a potential move, this might have been the wrong year to do it.

If you look at Comic-Con’s online scheduler, “Tron” has the most attendees so far.
Don’t count out “Castle” on Sunday as well. I have a feeling that will pack them in.
Mmmm, Tom Welling. Yum.
The reason there hasn’t been an Emily the Strange movie is because the legal rights were tied up for a few years. Apparently the character was ripped off from an old children’s book. The other parties have now been paid off, but there still likely won’t be a movie because, like you said, there is a recession on, and peak interest in this character has passed. Bad timing.
In a convergence of coincidental topics, the reason why Merlin “so drastically rewrites Arthurian legend” is because they are consciously patterning themselves after Smallville. They admire the way Smallville modernizes a shopworn mythos to appeal to a younger generation. The producers and writers have done numerous interviews talking about this quite openly. Google “Merlin” and “Smallville” together and tons of these articles come up.
Not to be a negative nelly, but why is Glee at COMIC-Con? In what way do these two things go together? There is nothing fringe, geeky, sci-fi, fantasy, or comicbook-related about Glee. It is a big, mainstream hit, with no genre hooks at all. It is stuff like this that make people complain that Comic Con has become a lame sellout.
I agree. Why glee at Comic-Con? I go to Comic-Con to see a new movie not a bunch of singing and dancing High school students. I will watch that in my other time lol.
Big thumbs up to Sci-fi movies. Thats all I’m going to say.
Shockwave Darkside 3D. This sounds geek worthy and I raise an eyebrow of interest, considering it’s the only independent film at Comic-Con I’ve heard of. Bill Sage the teacher from Precious (very interesting casting choice) is in it. As well as Mai Melancon a X-men alumni sadly cameo Psylocke. But what happened to the days when everything was a surprise and true comic book lovers reigned over quirky films and they were the rule not the odd ball exception?
Well said, M. Smith! Shockwave definitely sounds geek worthy. I’m glad to see that people are still trying to make quality sci fi, despite not having a major budget. It may actually work in their favor.
Well, if you get right down to it, why are Megamind or Tron: Legacy or Salt or Battle: Los Angeles or The Expendables or Harry Potter or Let Me In or any of the other non-comic related movie panels at COMIC-Con? Because Comic-Con realized long ago that focusing solely on comics would never get them the crowds they wanted/needed.
Megamind, Tron: Legacy, Salt, Battle: Los Angeles, The Expendables and Harry Potter are all appropriate for CC. So I don’t think that is what the dissidence is about. To me it’s that any company with enough money can buy their way in and have a panel.
You forgot Unnatural History panel and screening of new episode! Great new family show!! Cartoon Network’s first live action show that Disney and Nickelodeon are terrified of and are trying to strangle in its crib.
I guess someone forgot to tell the con and fx that Sunday is slow ass family day – Son’s Of Anarchy and It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia are going to rock Sunday afternoon.
I am looking forward to the EMILY Panel. I have been a fan for years and Rob Reger always does something cool for his panel.
Despite the fact that its been in development for a while, I really hope that they do the Emily the Strange movie. I heard that Emily is attached to a MUSIC project with Virgin Records?? Maybe something better than a movie in the works?
“And that’s kinda it. Interesting – and significant — to note that this year, for the first time in several years, there are no big movie panels in Hall H on Sunday.”
I’d have to check my old schedules, but I don’t recall there ever being a Hall H panel on Sunday.
I thought it closed up shop after the last Saturday panel.
Dude, listen to your girlfriend and go check out Merlin. Ask them when they’re going to have Arthur know about Merlin’s magic. The producers are not media-savvy by US standards, so their obfuscations could be amusing.
If Bradley James were going to be there, I’d ask for you.
Thank you for writing about Shockwave, Darkside. There is one small correction that we want to make from the article. It mentions that the film “is to be directed by Jay Weisman.” The film is already done, and Keenspot’s web comic is based on the finished film. We’ll be unveiling our 3D trailer and preview of the comic book this Sunday, July 25.
