EXCLUSIVE: I hear CBS has picked the replacement for departing daytime soap As the World Turns: a daily panel talk show hosted by Sara Gilbert, on whose idea the show is based, Julie Chen (who’s married to CBS Corp chief Les Moonves), Holly Robinson Peete, Sharon Osbourne, Leah Remini and Marissa Jaret Winokur that focuses on topical events through the eyes of moms. That’s why it’s casually referred to as “The Mom Show”. The pilot, executive produced by Tom Forman (Extreme Makeover: Home Edition), John Redmann (The Tyra Banks Show) and Gilbert, was one of several CBS ordered for the ATWT timeslot, along with a Pyramid reboot hosted by Andy Richter and a cooking game show starring Emeril Lagasse. But I hear the View-type female-oriented talk show screened very well at the network and had been the clear frontrunner. I hear CBS eyes a tentative October launch, a pretty ambitious plan for mounting a new daily show with only 8 weeks of prep time. ATWT is slated to bow out in September after a 54-year run. The talk show will be filmed in Los Angeles where Chen also co-hosts CBS’ Early Show year-round as well as the network’s reality series Big Brother in the summer.
UPDATE 2PM: CBS just issued a press release confirming the pickup of the new talk show:
CBS has ordered a new daytime talk show for fall 2010 featuring a panel of well-known news and entertainment personalities who will examine topical events and contemporary issues through the eyes of mothers. The daily, one-hour series will be co-hosted by Julie Chen, Sara Gilbert, Sharon Osbourne, Holly Robinson Peete, Leah Remini and Marissa Jaret Winokur. The co-hosts—moms with children ranging in age from infant to adult—will swap stories, challenge each other on issues and engage the studio audience and viewers at home about events in the headlines and their own homes through the lens of motherhood. Show segments will include guest interviews with entertainers and newsmakers, live remotes from the field and personal home footage shot by the co-hosts themselves. The show was developed by Gilbert, who also serves as executive producer.
“Daytime is an evolving daypart with more variety now among soap operas, game and talk shows,” said Barbara Bloom, SVP, Daytime, CBS Entertainment. “We were looking for a new format that would speak to the core audience but also have the topical and entertainment value to go even broader. This panel is not a bashful bunch; they are outspoken on any issue you put on the table. It promises to be an hour of television with timely discussions, unfiltered opinions and a lot of personality.”
Julie Chen has been an anchor of “The Early Show,” CBS News’ weekday morning broadcast, since October 2002. Chen spends her summers doing double duty between co-anchoring “The Early Show” and hosting “Big Brother,” a reality series that began its 12th season on CBS in July 2010. Chen lives in New York and Los Angeles with her husband, Leslie Moonves, with whom she has a son and 3 stepchildren.
Sara Gilbert may be best known for her role as Darlene Conner in the long-running series “Roseanne,” which garnered her two Emmy nominations. Her additional television credits include roles on “ER,” “Twins,” “24,” “Will & Grace,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Law & Order: SVU” and “Private Practice,” as well as “Welcome to New York,” “The Big Bang Theory” and “The Class” on the Network. She has appeared in films such as “Poison Ivy,” “Riding in Cars with Boys,” “Desert Blue,” “Light It Up,” “The Big Tease” and “High Fidelity.” A Magna Cum Laude graduate of Yale University with a degree in Art, Gilbert made her directorial debut with the critically acclaimed short film “Persona Non Grata.” Gilbert has exhibited her photographs in New York City at Paul Morris Gallery and at the Deutsche Guggenheim Museum in Berlin. She lives in Los Angeles with her family.
Holly Robinson Peete’s television credits include “21 Jump Street,” “Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper,” “For Your Love,” “One on One” and most recently, “Celebrity Apprentice.” She also appeared in the telefilm, “Matters of Life & Dating.” She performed the theme songs for both “21 Jump Street” and “Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper,” and did her own singing as Diana Ross in the miniseries “The Jacksons: An American Dream.” She and her husband, former NFL QB Rodney Peete, formed the HollyRod Foundation in 1996 and HollyRod4Kids in 2000. Robinson Peete won the 2006 Quill Literacy Award for her first book, Get Your Own Damn Beer, I’m Watching the Game: A Women’s Guide to Loving Pro Football. In spring 2010, she released her second book, co-authored by her 12-year old daughter, entitled My Brother Charlie. Robinson Peete and her husband of 15 years are the proud parents of four children. They currently reside in Los Angeles.
Sharon Osbourne has managed numerous artists’ careers over a 30-year span, and is also credited with creating and producing the first reality celebrity TV show, “The Osbournes,” for which she won an Emmy. Her additional television credits include “Will & Grace,” “Days of Our Lives” and hosting “The Sharon Osbourne Show.” She is currently a judge on “America’s Got Talent.” She is a best-selling author of three books, including her autobiography, Sharon Osbourne Extreme: My Autobiography. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband, Ozzy Osbourne. They have three children.
Leah Remini is best known for her role as Carrie Heffernan on the long-running series “The King of Queens,” on the Network. Her previous television credits include “Living Dolls,” “Saved By the Bell,” “Cheers” and “Friends.” Her film credits also include “Old School.” Since then, she has produced two “Inside Out” wedding and baby specials for VH1, as well as a series of “In the Motherhood” webisodes. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband, Angelo Pagan, and daughter and three stepsons.
Marissa Jaret Winokur is best known for creating the role of “Tracy Turnblad” in the hit Broadway musical,Hairspray, a performance for which she won a Tony Award, Drama Desk Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Actress. Winokur was most recently seen as the host “Dance Your Ass Off.” Her other television credits include “Dancing With the Stars,” “Stacked” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” as well as the telefilms “It Was One of Us” and “Beautiful Girl,” which she also executive produced. She has appeared in such films as “Fever Pitch,” “Teaching Mrs. Tingle,” “Never Been Kissed,” “Scary Movie” and “American Beauty.” She is currently a correspondent for TV Guide Network’s “Hollywood 411″ and “Reality Chat,” while starring in the Nora Ephron play, “Love, Loss and What I Wore,” at the Geffen Playhouse. Winokur and her husband, comedy writer Judah Miller, reside in Los Angles with their son Zev.
The series is produced by Raquel Productions Inc. Executive producers are Sara Gilbert and John Redmann.

It pretty much sounds like The View but with less interesting panelists. This will flop.
this is another stupid talk show what are you trying to do fill up the whole day with stupid talk shos I know I am not the only person that hates these stupid talk shows why take off both GUIEING LIGHT and AS THE WORLD TURNS. and replace them with stupid game shows and stupid talk show you are not gaining my support I turn the tv off now by by by cbs.
Oh great. MORE of the unwatchable Mrs. Les Moonves. Just because she screwed him shouldn’t mean his choices in programs has to keep screwing the viewers.
Ouch! Sleepin’ with tha boss! LOL!
Well, MBActress, BriteBlonde1 is speaking the truth and does not have to apologize, hence the truth vindicates itself. Well, I believe that CBS is finally living up to it’s initials, CBS, because that is what I C on there mostly, these days, is BS.
So Julie Chen gets a third show on CBS? Imagine how well she would doing if she actually had any talent.
What happened to Bethenny Frankel? Wasn’t she attached to this at one time?
“But I hear the View-type female-oriented talk show screened very well at the network and had been the clear frontrunner.”
Really? A show that stars the wife of the CEO screened well at the network. Shocking.
I can’t help it, I read this as “Daily Show Replaces As the World Turns” and really had to take a second look.
Daytime television sounds like an intellectually vapid wasteland. Do women really watch this kind of shit?
Yah, we do. I’ll be tuning in.
Great! A ripoff of The View. At least Sara is better looking than Barbara Walters.
Betty White is better to look at than Barbara Walters!
They should just send on their nannies.
It sure has paid off for Julie Chen to break up Leslie Moonves’s marriage! Three shows at once! Good ol’ nepotism wins again!
I am boycotting this show in protest over the cancellation of “As the World Turns.” CBS deserves a pair of black eyes over this latest dumb decision.
I am totally with you! I won’t be watching this copycat, boring, snooze show that will attempt to replace As The World Turns .. You may have the power to jump at the snap of your execs wive’s fingers .. but you’ll never replace ATWT with their fans! I certainly won’t be watching this garbage!
This is a joke CBS .. Wake Up!
A talk show with Les Moonves’ wife was a “clear frontrunner?” Wow, who woulda guess that? Does CBS not have any nepotism policy at all?
Despite that, getting Leah Remini back on TV is a big plus. And Holly is great.
I don’t have anything against any of the hosts they chose, but this talks show really could use the quick wit of a stand-up comedian. I imagine that the addition of Debi Gutierrez (who hosted a similar talk show on PBS) would really liven things up in a daily show like this. If you think about why “The View” is so successful now, it’s because they have 3 smart, funny comedians as part of the panel — Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar and Sherri Shephard.
What a bunch of idiots…a stupid talk show to replace a 53 year old family institution of entertainment? They can’t possibly be serious. I have watched As The World Turns since the mid 1960′s and I can’t wait to get home each day from work to watch it. They will alienate millions of fans and if this is the route they chose, I pray for their failure. A talk show, REALLY??? I was so sad and disappointed when they cancelled Guiding Light, but for them to cancel the best daytime show on television, shows how in tune they are with daytime fans. They need to have their craniums removed from their respective rectums.
Yes, it is really sad. I feel bad for my Mom since it was also her favorite. I’m primarily a Y&R fan but I grew up watching this show as well.
If you have been watching that soap since the 1960′s then you’re no longer the demographic they’re looking for. Advertisers want viewers 18 to 49.
pete: Advertisers need a reality check. Ppl age 18-49 are in school & work in the daytime. When they come home they ahve homework to complete, meals to cooks, kids to wash.
They got rid of ATWT for this ??? Hands up who won’t be watching !!!
AMEN, can’t think we need another “talk” show. ATWT was a real classic, as was Guiding Light.
Guess I’ll watch cable re-runs.
Doesn’t The Early Show tape in NY?
THE CBS EARLY SHOW ORIGINATES IN MSNHATTAN, NEW YORK CITY
“CBS” now stands for the “Chen Broadcasting System.” If I were Katie Couric I’d start being nervous….I’m sure Julie wants her job too.
Every time I see a Mom/parenting talk show I change the channel.
In other news, CBS announces that Julie Chen will be named host of SURVIVOR, AMAZING RACE and the program formerly known as THE LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN, as well provide color commentary for the NCAA championship series and all golf telecasts on the network. That should about cover it.
Hardly a representational cross-section of “moms” that most who watches daytime TV are going to relate to, either. And liberal-minded networks fret and wonder why no one watches TV….
At first I was giving Les Moonves a lot of credit for turning CBS’ fortunes around into a #1 network in the late 90s but then he fucks up like this again by giving his precious wife her third vehicle.
It really is confirmed now that Let’s Make a Deal was a huge flop b/c they didn’t replace ATWT with a game show like they were going to do so Guiding Light won in that regard.
A talk show is the replacement for a legend like ATWT? Really?!!!! WTF?
Are you serious?!!!
The only thing good thing about this show is Sara Gilbert and Leah Remini outside of it really blows and I mean blows bad.
I really hope as a backlash to CBS’ neglect of their soaps that the hours they own go back to the affiliates much like what NBC has had to go through after they canceled all of their soaps except DAYS and only own two whole hours outside of the first three from the Today Show.
The wife of the CEO and a Scientologist on the panel! Wow! Can’t wait to miss this disaster! (been watching ATWT since I was 6- okay it’s gone downhill due to budget cuts and an awful writing staff – but it will never reach the nadir this promises to deliver)
Julie Chen should give me advice on being a mom? What can she tell me? How to screw the boss and hire a nanny? She now has three shows on CBS and probably three nannies to take care of her child.
Funny how having a baby usually makes you want to work less and actually spend more time parenting. “It tested well… ” Please! Give me a break! Julie Chen is like a character out of a Judith Krantz novel. Or a Dominick Dunne mini series. Do some reporting here.
@ samantha : AGREED!
Nepotism!
I predict this show will fail in 3-6 months time. The View will hammer them in the ratings and this is nothing more than Moonvees giving his no-talent hack of a wife more airtime on a network that does poorly in the daytime to start with and their news division is third in the ratings. Like one poster said…it will become the Chen Broadcasting System sooner rather than later. What an awful idea!
It’s as if I wrote it myself. Get out of my head!
I love it! This is going to be the biggest bomb in daytime television ever! Game show fans are mad as are the fans of As The World Turns! No one is going to watch this heaping pile of crap!
@ i love it:
it might work. Look @ The View. It is still going after 13 yrs.
They are the 1st & only show to ever have a current USA President on for a iinterview in the history of the world. That means somehting.
Im mad that Pres BO chose TView as this means BW will go on thinking she is the best thing ever.
