EXCLUSIVE: I hear CBS has picked the replacement for departing daytime soap As the World Turns: a daily panel talk show hosted by Sara Gilbert, on whose idea the show is based, Julie Chen (who’s married to CBS Corp chief Les Moonves), Holly Robinson Peete, Sharon Osbourne, Leah Remini and Marissa Jaret Winokur that focuses on topical events through the eyes of moms. That’s why it’s casually referred to as “The Mom Show”. The pilot, executive produced by Tom Forman (Extreme Makeover: Home Edition), John Redmann (The Tyra Banks Show) and Gilbert, was one of several CBS ordered for the ATWT timeslot, along with a Pyramid reboot hosted by Andy Richter and a cooking game show starring Emeril Lagasse. But I hear the View-type female-oriented talk show screened very well at the network and had been the clear frontrunner. I hear CBS eyes a tentative October launch, a pretty ambitious plan for mounting a new daily show with only 8 weeks of prep time. ATWT is slated to bow out in September after a 54-year run. The talk show will be filmed in Los Angeles where Chen also co-hosts CBS’ Early Show year-round as well as the network’s reality series Big Brother in the summer.
UPDATE 2PM: CBS just issued a press release confirming the pickup of the new talk show:
CBS has ordered a new daytime talk show for fall 2010 featuring a panel of well-known news and entertainment personalities who will examine topical events and contemporary issues through the eyes of mothers. The daily, one-hour series will be co-hosted by Julie Chen, Sara Gilbert, Sharon Osbourne, Holly Robinson Peete, Leah Remini and Marissa Jaret Winokur. The co-hosts—moms with children ranging in age from infant to adult—will swap stories, challenge each other on issues and engage the studio audience and viewers at home about events in the headlines and their own homes through the lens of motherhood. Show segments will include guest interviews with entertainers and newsmakers, live remotes from the field and personal home footage shot by the co-hosts themselves. The show was developed by Gilbert, who also serves as executive producer.
“Daytime is an evolving daypart with more variety now among soap operas, game and talk shows,” said Barbara Bloom, SVP, Daytime, CBS Entertainment. “We were looking for a new format that would speak to the core audience but also have the topical and entertainment value to go even broader. This panel is not a bashful bunch; they are outspoken on any issue you put on the table. It promises to be an hour of television with timely discussions, unfiltered opinions and a lot of personality.”
Julie Chen has been an anchor of “The Early Show,” CBS News’ weekday morning broadcast, since October 2002. Chen spends her summers doing double duty between co-anchoring “The Early Show” and hosting “Big Brother,” a reality series that began its 12th season on CBS in July 2010. Chen lives in New York and Los Angeles with her husband, Leslie Moonves, with whom she has a son and 3 stepchildren.
Sara Gilbert may be best known for her role as Darlene Conner in the long-running series “Roseanne,” which garnered her two Emmy nominations. Her additional television credits include roles on “ER,” “Twins,” “24,” “Will & Grace,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Law & Order: SVU” and “Private Practice,” as well as “Welcome to New York,” “The Big Bang Theory” and “The Class” on the Network. She has appeared in films such as “Poison Ivy,” “Riding in Cars with Boys,” “Desert Blue,” “Light It Up,” “The Big Tease” and “High Fidelity.” A Magna Cum Laude graduate of Yale University with a degree in Art, Gilbert made her directorial debut with the critically acclaimed short film “Persona Non Grata.” Gilbert has exhibited her photographs in New York City at Paul Morris Gallery and at the Deutsche Guggenheim Museum in Berlin. She lives in Los Angeles with her family.
Holly Robinson Peete’s television credits include “21 Jump Street,” “Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper,” “For Your Love,” “One on One” and most recently, “Celebrity Apprentice.” She also appeared in the telefilm, “Matters of Life & Dating.” She performed the theme songs for both “21 Jump Street” and “Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper,” and did her own singing as Diana Ross in the miniseries “The Jacksons: An American Dream.” She and her husband, former NFL QB Rodney Peete, formed the HollyRod Foundation in 1996 and HollyRod4Kids in 2000. Robinson Peete won the 2006 Quill Literacy Award for her first book, Get Your Own Damn Beer, I’m Watching the Game: A Women’s Guide to Loving Pro Football. In spring 2010, she released her second book, co-authored by her 12-year old daughter, entitled My Brother Charlie. Robinson Peete and her husband of 15 years are the proud parents of four children. They currently reside in Los Angeles.
Sharon Osbourne has managed numerous artists’ careers over a 30-year span, and is also credited with creating and producing the first reality celebrity TV show, “The Osbournes,” for which she won an Emmy. Her additional television credits include “Will & Grace,” “Days of Our Lives” and hosting “The Sharon Osbourne Show.” She is currently a judge on “America’s Got Talent.” She is a best-selling author of three books, including her autobiography, Sharon Osbourne Extreme: My Autobiography. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband, Ozzy Osbourne. They have three children.
Leah Remini is best known for her role as Carrie Heffernan on the long-running series “The King of Queens,” on the Network. Her previous television credits include “Living Dolls,” “Saved By the Bell,” “Cheers” and “Friends.” Her film credits also include “Old School.” Since then, she has produced two “Inside Out” wedding and baby specials for VH1, as well as a series of “In the Motherhood” webisodes. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband, Angelo Pagan, and daughter and three stepsons.
Marissa Jaret Winokur is best known for creating the role of “Tracy Turnblad” in the hit Broadway musical,Hairspray, a performance for which she won a Tony Award, Drama Desk Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Actress. Winokur was most recently seen as the host “Dance Your Ass Off.” Her other television credits include “Dancing With the Stars,” “Stacked” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” as well as the telefilms “It Was One of Us” and “Beautiful Girl,” which she also executive produced. She has appeared in such films as “Fever Pitch,” “Teaching Mrs. Tingle,” “Never Been Kissed,” “Scary Movie” and “American Beauty.” She is currently a correspondent for TV Guide Network’s “Hollywood 411″ and “Reality Chat,” while starring in the Nora Ephron play, “Love, Loss and What I Wore,” at the Geffen Playhouse. Winokur and her husband, comedy writer Judah Miller, reside in Los Angles with their son Zev.
The series is produced by Raquel Productions Inc. Executive producers are Sara Gilbert and John Redmann.

Contact me in 2064 when this show hits its 54th Anniversary. LOL at aiming at “Moms”. What a freaking joke. I agree with other that at least there is some satifaction that ATWT wasn’t replaced by another cheap-o gameshow. FAIL.
Sara Gilbert and Sharon Osbourne – Cool. The rest – Eh. And who is EPt? Tom Forman or John Redmann?
Probably the original concept of this show was a good one and then the network got involved as to who they wanted the hosts to be…so TPTB screwed it up. Sara Gilbert might be forced out after the first season (if it lasts that long) even though it is her show.
Those who want to buy the advertising during the daytime to reach that audience have found game shows are not the way to go because there is no viewer loyalty with them like the kind of loyalty they get with soap viewers. Talk shows are better than game shows but they still do not compare to soaps.
Networks are doing harm to themselves by getting rid of the soaps no matter the decline in ratings because the reality is that all network shows are experiencing a decline in ratings because there are so many more choices to not only watch just about anything…but also to watch it at any time the viewer pleases. It is time to invest in the soaps and let them go back to the quality of writing they had up until the early 90s and the suits need to stop interfering in the content of the soaps.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who sees ‘View Rip off here’ and what cracks me up is it states ‘news and entertainment personalities’. JUST One news anchor and the rest are celebrities. Give me a break.
The View gives women a bad name don’t need another one.
I love how the press release mentions that Chen, Peete, Winokur and Osbourne all have husbands. Yet, it conveniently leaves out the fact that Gilbert has a female partner (which actually is probably the most interesting thing about this piece of garbage).
I noted that fact and thank G-d someone posted it. Actually, Sara should provide some fun as her partner is a riot. Why CBS and other sites haven’t noted her wife and 2 awesome kids is beyond me, well except for the fact that they THINK ATWT viewers are in the dark ages. Families come in all shapes, sizes, and orientations, like soap viewers do. To sweep it under the rug is a disservice.
I noticed this too. Sara and her partner are both very talented women with two children, why was it brushed away as ‘Sara lives with her family in Los Angeles’ when everyone else’s children were numbered and husbands were named?
I think it sound great! I am excited to watch. Wonder what the title will be???
Definitely shows how twisted corporations and networks are. A 56-year-old creative, historic, scripted television show that has employed and will continue to employ countless people cancelled in exchange for what sounds like a vapid, annoying gabfest. Not to mention the fact that anything discussed on a talk show can be obtained on a smart-phone, so there is no compelling reason for people to watch. Unbelievable!
ANOTHER yenta gabfest, no thank you.
I’ll check it out simply for Gilbert (who is brilliant on BBT). Leah Remini and Sharon Osbourne should make for an interesting pairing. Neither is exactly quiet and reserved.
I could do without Julie Chen – boring.
I think it’s hilarious at how many people are getting bent out of shape about a crappy soap opera going off of the air. Wow.
Julie Chen!! Gimme a break! Love Sara Gilbert but Julie Chen – Ugh!!!
As I am English(Sorry !)I don’t really have much idea what you are wittering on about but keep it up as it is really entertaining !
This show sounds like “Loose Women” we get over here which is very popular . (with a certain demographic of course !!).
As others have said, great to see Ms Remini back gainfully employed.
all great comments.. I might be alone in this but I was excited for Chef Emeril to come to CBS… in my opinion, it could have been what drew me to watch CBS at 2pm.. and then keep the TV till the local news.. maybe the Julie Chen Sara Gilbert show is better at 4pm when OPRAH goes off the air.. I just watch tv… I dont make it…
The food element on TV is huge and CBS had the opp to catch Emeril by his toe…I would have visited CBS.com everyday for recipes ( like i do with food.com) I will be watching cooking channel instead.. I dont need the soap opera drama. I have enough drama in my house..
Great…..follow in the footsteps of THE VIEW and exclude Latina women. I guess CBS thinks Latina mothers have nothing to contribute to the conversation. And for the network to have Holly Robinson Peete make the announcement as a guest on the biggest Latino show in town, LOPEZ TONITE, is a slap in the face to the Latino community. “Hey, everyone, this is our new show: SIX WOMEN. ALL MOTHERS. NO LATINA.” But, hey, even if we don’t want you ON our show, we want all you Latinos to watch.” Smart move, CBS. NOT! I smell boycott. http://www.heralddeparis.com/dyana-ortelli-should-co-host-“the-view/78491
Goodpoint. Why no Latinas?
The y coulda asked Jen Lopez. Her acting career isnt working anymore so this coudla been a good job for her.
What about Constance Marie?
Rosa Blasi?
I would prefer a German star myself!
R I P As the World Turns. I’ll be missing you.
There was a talk show on the Slice network(formerly Life Network) appropriately enough, called the MOm SHow.Th only hostess I recognized was Laurie Hibbard, who is Mrs. Michael Gelman, producer of Regis and Kelly show in US. This show format was really a group of young moms who interacted daily on a variety of topics, all to do with motherhood,of course. Many guests in various fields of specialization and interest( all relating to motherhood) were featured.Ms. Gilbert, does this sound in any way familiar?LOL- It may still run on Canadian cable stations. Not sure.I don’t have kids myself, so I seldom watched it.Good luck with your endeavour, however…
Sara Gilbert is the only one I’m interested in seeing .
i am happy to see leah remini back on tv
Not exactly sure what CBS plans on naming this new daytime talk show. I don’t know about other CBS Daytime fans… I would have settled with CBS and P&G shrinking ‘Guiding Light’ and ‘As the World Turns’ back to half-hour in length, as a money-saving solution. IMO, CBS Daytime without those 2 long-running soaps simply isn’t CBS Daytime. I do believe that both soaps had such potential at once again becoming great shows.
Absolutely agree – miss ATWT and Guiding Light – each 1/2 hour would have been great instead of yet another TALK Show!
I am so sad that ATWT is cancelled and will not I repeat will not watch what they replace it with. To much talk shows the soap is a great escape all these years . and I feel bad for the actors who no longer have a home , we loved them. will not watch this channel ever again,my promise.. broken hearted J R
I agree. Enough talk shows. The same guests seem to go from one talk show to another. I like Julie Chen, but enough is enough. I’ll miss atwt just as musch as I miss Guiding Light. CBS soaps are the best. I will not be watching another talk show. CBS, you messed up!!!!
Idiots!…stop cancelling my soaps…I’m sick if talk shows…I get pleanty of that at work!
Better yet, why don’t you schedule a new nightly soap at 8:00pm…see who gets the ratings….Make it a med show and you will win….
Women are sick of the sports and news shows…I’m not watching much of your programming….except for the young and the restless/bold and the beautiful…
I stop watching tv at 10:00 pm nightly….Fox is really getting my attention…time for a boycot!
I hope your program flopps big time….
I am also sick of talk shows…..I think they are making a huge mistake. A lot of people will probably just start watching a soap on another channel. That’s what I will do. I already change the channel after As the World Turns is over, guess I will just quit watching CBS all together…since they will probably end up taking off all the soaps.
How many talk shows do we need? I won’t be watching. I’ll miss this show along with missing the Guiding Light. What a big mistake in taking these two soaps off the air.
Well, I for one, WON’T tune in to watch that! I have no reason to watch CBS anymore. Like we need another talk show!!! C’mon! So sick of that garbage. It’s a shame ATWT is done…today no less! So sad!
i’m a 27 year old male and i got sucked into watching the view for over a year now becauase i get a kick outta the women’s antics & undertone of hostility, but this bullshit with whoopi walking off the stage because Bill Riley had her cornered is stupid and i’m not watching it anymore beccause of whoopi’s arrogant pretentious behind!
