EXCLUSIVE: Daniel Craig has closed his deal to play journalist Mikael Blomkvist in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, a deal which factors in options for two sequels based on The Girl Who Played With Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets’ Nest. The novels comprise the bestselling trilogy by late Stieg Larsson.
Deadline told you first about the Craig talks, which back in June were hardly a certainty, because there were so many hurdles to jump. I’m told that with a whole lot of juggling between three studios, Craig will be able to make the movies. Essentially, he will begin work on the first film in Sweden, as soon as he removes his cowboy hat from shooting Cowboys and Aliens in the early fall. Scheduling was coordinated between Dragon Tattoo-maker Sony Pictures Entertainment, DreamWorks partners Stacey Snider and Steven Spielberg–who were flexible on the Cowboys and Aliens schedule–and James Bond rights holders Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson. The latter situation was tougher because of the uncertainty over when the next Bond film will get made–probably with Sam Mendes directing–because of MGM’s paralysis. CAA made Craig’s deal.
This puts Craig in a position no previous James Bond ever was in. He’s got two certain franchises between Bond and the Larsson books, and possibly another in Cowboys and Aliens, which he stars in with Harrison Ford, and for which Craig has an option on a second picture. Comic-Con crowds responded glowingly to footage shown by director Jon Favreau.
Sony Pictures Entertainment, director David Fincher and producer Scott Rudin are in the middle of casting the young actress who’ll play the juicy role of Lisbeth Salander. Deadline previously released those candidates include Ellen Page, Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland), Emily Browning (Sucker Punch), Sara Snook (Sleeping Beauty), Rooney Mara (The Social Network) and Sophie Lowe (Blame).
Sony just dated the film for a December 21, 2011 release. Steve Zaillian adapted the novel for the screen.
Daniel Craig in ‘Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’ Mix?
Sony Pictures Skeds ‘Girl With The Dragon Tattoo–But Two Leads Not Set Yet

Noomi Rapace was unforgettable in her role, and I would say, irreplaceable for a future series.
Big mistake to go for a no-name for Lisbeth Salander. The movies and the books are already out; we know what the big mystery is. Two big leads would get people into the theatre; “Daniel Craig and Natalie Portman!” or “Daniel Craig and Anna Paquin, Zoe Saldana or Ziyi Zhang!”
But who cares about the no-names who can’t hope to compete with Noomi Rapace, can’t hold their own against Craig and who’ve never opened a movie, let alone three?
And why the craziness with a rigid age and height limit? Larrson was about girl power; how is the random cattle call and a ruler going to help pick an actress? Why does the male lead get to walk on in while the girls get measured up like it’s the 50′s; Fincher been watching too much Mad Men? Is the film being directed by David Fincher or Bob Cummings?
If they keep down this road it’ll be another inflated tentpole that collapses before a sequel can ever be made. And blah, already bored with it. I’m more excited to see the next Swedish film in the trilogy than the US version.
Envisioned Craig from the first page to the last page of the third
Wasikowska is the deepest young actress ever…..make the unpredictable choice. Hoffman should be the evil shrink
Why don’t they just use Noomi Rapace. She’s already established the character, and she’s a god actor..
I THINK THAT part of the problem with the movie buisness that hollywood is constantly repeating itself , theres alot of sequeals and remakes, not alot of original thought, i loved absolutly loved the swedish version of tgwtdt i a m reading the books , I THINK HOLLY WOOD SHOULD THIS ONE ALONE !!!
I can’t believe you haven’t heard of Vince Fynn or Brad Thor. I highly recommend reading both, but I doubt you will ever see their books turned in to movies. They tell it like it is and no way would liberal Hollywood accept them. They know what Islamism is and aren’t afraid to write about it. Awesome character, plots, and dialogue. Mitch Rapp and Scot Harvath are true America heroes. We don’t need Batman with them around.
This looks like the typical Hollywooden adaptation of an already better film, and marvelous books. Choose some actors with something to give to it for Pete’s Sake. Popular pablum. L.A. should fall into the sea.
