CW Entertainment President Dawn Ostroff touted the network’s online sales initiative introduced at this year’s upfront market where the CW sold both airings of its shows on TV as well as online streaming with full commercial load. “We’re no longer looking at digital pennies, we have achieved digital dollars,” Ostroff said. The new initiative accounts for young viewers who watch shows online, something traditional ratings don’t reflect, she said. ”The days of waking up and looking at the overnight ratings are gone, especially for the younger demographic,” she said.
Ostroff is now the longest-running sitting broadcast entertainment president, having been in the job for 9 years (at CW and predecessor UPN). She was asked about Steve McPherson’s recent departure from ABC. ”I wish him all the best,” she said. “I always say these jobs are rented chairs. I’ve been sitting here for 9 years, having seen a lot of people come and go. Unfortunately for us, it’s not that unusual.”
Despite the rough ratings start for reality series Plain Jane last night, Ostroff said the network brass really believed in the show and were “very realistic about the ratings expectations” given the fact that Plain Jane and upcoming Canadian import 18 to Life are launching with little promotional support in a sea of repeats. She said the net’s promotional priority remains the fall rollout, and new dramas Nikita and Hellcats.
On the programming side, Ostroff said the door is open for former Smallville co-star Michael Rosenbaum to return for a cameo on the show’s upcoming final season. The network also is interested in developing a new series based on a DC property to succeed Smallville. In terms of its midseason plans, the network is still mulling a potential pickup of medical drama pilot HMS.

STILL mulling a HMS pickup? Lol, with what cast?
This is hilarious. Can I keep this quote for future reference, especially at the next Guild negotiations where the networks plead that they make no money, (or don’t know how much) from digital content? Oh, and no more ratings? What’s the new excuse gonna be for canning shows? Not enough digital streams? Hits on Hulu?
I hope that SAG and AFTRA negotiators are reading this.
Plain Jane forever
Seriously, who is she crappin? The show tanked last night and it did badly and yet she thinks everything is just peaches, roses and cream?
Question for the panel…how in the hell is she still keeping her job at that trainwreck called the CW? You’re right Dawn, you have been in the chair way too long! Time to move that posterior out and give someone with talent a chance to save this network from destruction.
CW? Don’t you mean the Gossip Girl Channel? If it wasn’t for Gossip Girl, the CW would be just another lonely number in the electronic program guide!!
What time warp have you been living in boo? Gossip Girl performs worse than Smallville, Vampire Diaries, and Supernatural. If it weren’t for the Sci-Fi shows the CW would be dead. It is almost dead anyway, but they finally seem to be waking up. They have a new action show this fall and will have a new DC comics-based show next fall.
Has anybody been in their job longer and done as little as dawn. sm at abc deserved to go because he’s nuts. Dawn should gave been gone at least 5 years ago but has survived because LM expects so little out of her and she’s a good person. It ‘s all crazy!
I really hope Rosenbaum returns to Smallville for the finale. The show started out being about the parallel evolutionary tracks of Clark Kent into Superman and Lex Luthor into the world’s greatest supervillain. It would bring a nice sense of closure if Lex were there at the end.
Jesus, she’s a train wreck. Has anyone ever accomplished less in one of those gigs??? Nine years?!?!? Really???
Never has someone done so little with so much in the history of TV. If you want fashion notes and hair and make up thoughts then she is your person. Otherwise it’s a joke. Her own execs cringe when they have to give her “big” notes.
Also, that photo looks to be about 15 years old and photoshopped over the CW logo…and 15 years is being generous.
It’s amazing. It’s seems that only in the entertainment industry do people with no-brains and nothing to offer fail upwards.
She’s an idiot! She got rid of ‘Reba’ which was their highest rated series!
She looks pretty hot here; can run my network anyday!
The CW doesn’t make sense. I support the implementation of a successful online distribution model, but wouldn’t it be funsies to also have like, content to distribute? And by content I mean that which people might actually want to watch. Maybe teenagers simply do not want consume this type of media today (I tend to imagine teenage boys playing video games only and girls texting furiously, both with cold, dead eyes, during their leisure time). But, back in my day (I’m about to be 24 but things seem to have changed rapidly), Buffy, Dawson’s Creek, Charmed, etc were the sh*t. 90210 is no Dawson’s Creek.
The genius that she is, has decided to make 1 of the only 2 “studs” on 90210 realize he’s suddenly gay.
