Focus Features will give Dinner For Schmucks scribes David Guion and Michael Handelman their shot at matching director’s chairs. The duo just got set to write and direct Cruise of the Gods, a remake of the 2002 BBC comedy about a fan cruise held in honor of The Children of Castor, a fictitious 1980s post apocalyptic sci-fi TV series. The cast is the guest of honor, but they’ve got mixed feelings, specifically dependent on whose career stalled with the series, and who went on to bigger and better things. The comedy’s being shepherded by Focus execs Michael Pruss and Kahli Small, and produced by Red Hour’s Stuart Cornfeld and Ben Stiller, with Jeremy Kramer exec producing with Baby Cow Productions’ Steve Coogan and Henry Normal. It’s got that showbiz-gone-very-wrong premise, which Stiller and Cornfeld milked for laffs in films like Tropic Thunder and Zoolander. Coogan, who appeared in the original BBC series as well as Tropic Thunder, might well play one of the cast members aboard the cruise. Paramount releases the Jay Roach-directed Dinner For Schmucks on July 30, which Guion and Handelman adapted from the Francis Veber French film Le Diner de Cons.

sounds like Galaxy Quest pt. 2
‘Zactly what I thought.
‘Zactly.
I third that sentiment.
I actually saw Cruise Of The Gods and liked it a lot. I rented it on DVD. I went to a Dr. Who club at the time and tried to explain why it was funny. Didn’t work out so well. In that English way some of the humiliation makes you wince. It’s ends pretty well, though. And Coogan’s actually a pretty nice guy in it. I saw Galaxy Quest again recently and, yea, it’s similar.
My thought exactly, Anon. Galaxy Quest was a great flick, though. Maybe this one will be, too.
Mike Pruss: great guy, great taste — and gets things done. Thank goodness there are still some smart execs in this town! Let’s hope Guion & Handelman are as good directors as they are writers….
Sweet Jesus! Again with the remakes! Of plots seen have a dozen years ago.
Galaxy Quest is a great, underrated movie. It’s more resonant now than when it was released considering Tim Allen’s career track. Casting could be a big factor with Cruise of the Gods — it would be great if the movie were sprinkled with people who had one big series… speaking of cruises, where is Lauren Tewes?
Having watched “Cruise” way back it’s got some similarities to “Galaxy Quest” but in many ways they’re not the same. Obviously GQ zooms off into space while Cruise stays largely confined to the boat
And GREAT veneers on the left guy …. althpough a bit o.t.t.. But I guess all Americans are unrealistic when they decide to get their teeth bleached. People of a certain age CAN NOT have totally white teeth without creating the image that they are false.
And therefore they usually are!
Isn’t “Left Guy” Steve Carrell?
By Grabthor’s hammer, what a savings!
Though I haven’t seen the original, I trust exec Pruss’ good taste. Here’s hoping!
