UPDATE: Luke Y Thompson reports from Comic-Con 2010 today: Walt Disney Studios ended the TRON panel with a surprise: the logo of Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion ride! The green drawing of a ghost was shown along with some of the spiel from the ride. The audience is asked who it thinks the perfect director would be. Crowd yells out “Tim Burton,” but goes crazy when Guillermo Del Toro comes out! He says he’s nervous because it’s a Disney panel, which limits his vocabulary. He says he has ridden the ride at least once a year since he was a kid, and notes he always felt there were more story possibilities than just a horror movie. That said, “the scary will be scary. We’re being true to the spirit of the original Imagineers… We are not returning Eddie Murphy’s call.” It will be shot in 3D, live-action, and the Hatbox Ghost is the pivotal character.
End panel, for real this time.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – July 22, 2010 –Guillermo del Toro surprised the 6,500 fans gathered today at Comic-Con with the announcement that he is currently developing a new film for The Walt Disney Studios based on the classic Disney theme park attraction, The Haunted Mansion.
“Dark imagery is an integral part of the Walt Disney legacy. After all, Disney himself was the father of some really chilling moments and characters – think Chernabog from Fantasia or Maleficent as the Dragon or the Evil Queen in Snow White,” said del Toro. “I couldn’t be more excited to be a part of my own adaptation of the original theme park attraction Walt envisioned and that remains- for me- the most desirable piece of real
estate in the whole world!”“Millions of people from around the world visit The Haunted Mansion each year, but no one has ever had a tour guide like Guillermo del Toro,” said Rich Ross, Chairman of The Walt Disney Studios. “Guillermo is one of the most gifted and innovative filmmakers working today and he is going to take audiences on a visually-thrilling journey like they’ve never experienced before.”
Since August 1969, foolish mortals have dared to trespass on the macabre grounds of Disney’s Haunted Mansion. A hallowed landmark in Disneyland’s New Orleans square, it’s the dwelling place of 999 happy haunts dying to meet new visitors each day. The plantation-style of the mansion’s facade is a sweet deception for visitors. Inside, ghostly doom buggies line the hallways. Since its construction, the mysteries of the mansion have transcended the attraction with stories surfacing about horrifying encounters with the supernatural. Versions of the daunting edifice have been built at other Disney theme parks in Orlando, Tokyo and Paris.

Didn’t they make a Haunted Mansion movie a few years ago? And didn’t it suck balls?
IT SAYS IN THE ARTICLE:
That said, “the scary will be scary. We’re being true to the spirit of the original Imagineers… We are not returning Eddie Murphy’s call.”
That clearly means they know the other version with Murphy was a failure and have no intention on bringing him back.
Why reboot it again with less than 10 years passing between films?
Besides, this wasn’t intended to be movie material. Most parents won’t take kids to it because the title alone denotes potential nightmares, and 18-49 won’t go because they recognize it as a Disney kids property.
Leave it be.
youre crazy!! I already know tons of people that cannot wait to see this del toro version of HM!
I am interested for sure. Can’t be any worse than the Eddie Murphy version from a few years ago.
I…thought they already did this?
Didn’t they already make a movie based on this ride? If I remember correctly it was a failed attempt with Eddie Murphy that may as well have gone straight to DVD.
I will admit i’m excited to see what Guillermo can do (esp. after something like Pan’s Labyrinth) but doesn’t it cheapen the brand to re-work this ride again and again?
boring.
Wow, they made it through that entire press release without acknowledging the existence or massive failure of the Eddie Murphy HAUNTED MANSION movie.
What? No Eddie Murphy?
Wasn’t this already filmed with Eddie Murphy?
How strange, the press release seems to have no mention of Disney’s 2003 Haunted Mansion.
I wonder if they’re afraid the Eddie Murphy version will haunt them.
So will this be a complete reboot or a sequel to Disney’s 2003 attempt at a Haunted Mansion movie — and if so, will Eddie Murphy return?
ummmm…… are we forgetting that dreadful Eddie Murphy movie from a few years ago? And what’s next, Space Mountain the movie? Hey, I’ll vote for the It’s a Small World flick!
Excuse me while I vomit.
Loved the first one with Eddie Murphy.
Can’t wait till it’s released on Criterion.
This is a waste of his talent.
What gives? No one liked my version of HAUNTED MANSION from a few years back?
Are they really just going to pretend that 2003 Eddie Murphy movie doesn’t exist?
Next up: “Tramageddon”
Didn’t we already try and fail with this in 2003? Toooo soooon.
Funny how this press release doesn’t even acknowledge that Rob Minkoff directed, Eddie Murphy abomination from a few years ago. Del Toro could do something really special with the concept, or as is more likely, Rich Ross will force him to turn it into a not-so-creepy episode of “The Suite Life”. I wonder then if we’ll all become nostalgic for the Minkoff/Murphy version. Sigh!
No mention of the Haunted Mansion movie with Eddie Murphy that flopped when, after Pirates of the Carribbean hit big, Disney ran to find another ride to turn into a movie?
I actually took my family to check out the last time they tried this idea in 2003 with Eddie Murphy. It was one of the worst movies ever made and almost ruined our Thanksgiving. I’m still bitter. Fool me once…
Didn’t Eddie Murhpy make two of these?
Didn’t Disney already do a Haunted Mansion with Eddie Murphy? I love Eddie Murphy but I don’t remember that movie being great box office.
Murphy! sorry, gotta work on that proofreading thing….
No mention at all of the 2003 Eddie Murphy Disney film based on the ride??
Didn’t they do this with Eddie Murphy?
