Warner Bros and producer Jerry Weintraub have tried long and hard to mount a remake of the 1977 George Burns comedy Oh, God! I’m told Weintraub just pitched the studio a new version of the film, with Hollywood’s hottest octogenarian–Betty White,–as the title character. Paul Rudd was pitched for the role of the hapless mortal played by John Denver in the Carl Reiner-directed original. Weintraub, who produced the original, has been trying for years on the remake, most recently with Ellen Degeneres attached for the lead. This incarnation is nascent–the studio doesn’t have a script it loves, and I’m not sure White and Rudd have been contacted. But keeping in mind how vociferously Deadline readers endorsed White to replace Megan Fox in Transformers 3 and to play the new Spider-Man, this made enough sense to note.

Oh, God no!
Not that I have anything against Betty White, she can out-funny a lot of performers 1/3 of her age, and deserves work. I just never liked the original.
Considering her age, getting her insured ain’t gonna be cheap!
It’s not like with the Bullock movie where if she became too ill or died her character could be replaced. As the star, the movies lives or dies with her!
George Burns was the same age when he shot the sequel “Oh God You Devil”. He was the lead AND second lead.
If Betty White’s not available, I nominate Richard Belzer.
Dude. That is… actually not a bad idea at all.
Inspired. We live and die for Betty White.
- The Gingerales
This is actually a great idea.
I agree. this is actually a very inspired idea. It hits on so many tones that are current yet brings even more exciting possiblities to the horizon. There needs to be more of an enfusion of vitality to our older family of humans. On even purely marketing levels it brings an enormous potential of income to a films potential, hitting the over 50 market which is mostly ignored in the industry, and like everything that is done by by our parents that is significant to our lives, younger audiences will still follow suite if there parents approve and endorse a product. The potential is staggering actually.
Yet it’s potential can only be achieved with a solid fresh insite on the subjects handled. mainly “LIFE”. The tone must be hit perfectly, and with that it could be a bench mark to how our modern society embraces aging strongly for the next 20 years and more.
Betty White=God? Perfect.
(Not much love for Paul Rudd as John Denver)
Disagree, good choice. Rudd’s current level shows potential to assend to a more weighty persona in films right now, and he has more experience and ability than Denver had when he was cast for the role. Denver rose to the challenge beautifully but Rudd’s background shows more potential at the start then Denver’s career had projected to that point. It’s a solid safe bet.
But ofcourse, I do agree that Betty is Perfect! Glaring in the Face Perfect!
I agree. He just doesn’t seem right for that part. I think they should try and go with Ellen Degeneres. This would also keep with the male to female theme they are doing with the remake.
Maybe God can bring George Burns back, ha ha ha.
This movie might fly, the devils in the details.
I hope to god she and her camp have the good sense not to bother with this. remakes and reboots are becoming a ridiculous financial and sad creative crutch for the studios.
Really Furious???? Seriously? Oh God is one of the sweetest, elegantly written, beautifully acted comedies of it’s time. Please revisit. Or get a heart transplant.
a woman god, HOW VERY EDG-zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
been done a zillion times before but somehow this one will be the least funny
It has potential, that’s a gut feeling.
Seconds anyone?
yes… it’s really great idea…
Love Betty. But too much exposure. Balance it, Betty. Where is Susan Boyle right now?
Love Betty. But GOD is way too much exposure. Balance it, Betty. Where is Susan Boyle right now?
Um…No thank you.
i love betty white, but we need to relax with the this betty white thing, shes great but i feel people are coming alittle late to the party, good things sometimes come in small doses, please turn the volume down on the betty white craze, i know shes a comic legend, but if im getting tired of it, i know others are, and i LOVE Betty
This is the most offensive thing I have ever heard. Please for the love of everything decent and moral DON’T DO THIS! This is sacreligious and despicable.
can’t keep waiting too long..
What a frickin awesome idea. Betty would kill it. Could be better than the original. I think people are ready to learn the TRUTH about God. With Ellen Degeneres playing the John Denver role we’d have a slam dunk. I feel a Facebook page coming on. (As to Scooter’s concern, Betty will probably outlive him!)
i doubt it’s a good idea
….only if they sign Tim McGraw to play the John Denver role.
Sad, but Betty White is too old for a movie role-
Just watched her new series and she is so old and frail her line delivery is as if she isn’t acting to anyone-just kind of fumbling and speaking in monotone-sorry guys, but its true
Its been great to see her on SNL, but time to hang up the shoes
Mrs God…she’s not to old..she is human,,,get real…
Oh God, not another remake
How is Betty doing all this at almost 90?? She’s got her clothing line, hoodiebuddie line, calendar, and people want her guest appearing on about every show/movie, now they want her to be the lead? With everything going on, Scooter’s right, insurance is not gonna be cheap! Love Betty but wow.
