EXCLUSIVE: To overhear Jeffrey Katzenberg’s private conversations these days, Comcast supposedly wants to buy DreamWorks Animation
and make him head of NBC Universal. But at last week’s Camp Allen — Sun Valley’s annual Alllen & Co investment conference attended by the Who’s Who of tech, Internet, entertainment, and media industries — Comcast’s Brian Roberts and Steve Burke were telling a very different story. They mentioned to several power players that Katzenberg has been pursuing them to buy DreamWorks Animation and lobbying them to make him head of NBCU. (“Because they’re the new guys in town,” one of my sources explains. “Even though Steve and Jeffrey never got along when they both worked for Disney.” Burke, the son of former Capital Cities/ABC president and icon Dan Burke, spent a dozen years in key Walt Disney Co positions before quitting in 1998 to go to work for Comcast.) I heard that the Comcast guys told various Camp Allen bigwigs that they aren’t interested in DWA or Katzenberg — emphasizing that Burke is going to be very hands on with NBCU.
I’ve been hearing that Jeffrey already has offered up DWA to every Hollywood studio, but they and their parent companies have passed. Before Comcast, the most recent “no” came from Time Warner’s Jeff Bewkes. Meanwhile, DWA has two years to go on its distribution deal with Paramount but also an “out” clause after 10 films. Then again, Katzenberg can always obtain DWA’s freedom by buying out Paramount’s deal share himself.

I wonder if they might be considering Jeff Gaspin or Bob Greenblatt. it seems that both would do a great job and some say Jeff Gaspin has done a great job running NBC Cable.
Great reporting!
Agreed.
Also agreed. Great journalism.
Interesting that Katzenberg has been offering up DWA everywhere. Is his ego marginalized by running a simple little animation company? Or is his secret hankering to run a Big Media Co. his leftover dissatisfaction from leaving Diz? Does he need a big-play to run to cap his illustrious career?
But that’s what little Jeffery Katzemburg does best: make children’s films. Why would he do that? He can’t do much else.
Great story, Nikki … sounds to me like Jeffrey is looking for “a graceful exit.”(Ahem!)
Excuse me if I’ve missed something obvious, but why exactly is Katzenberg desperate to sell DWA?
guess Comcast given how its going to be under the gun from the government when it has nbc did not want to add itself to any more heat by making itself bigger with dreamworks. plus given that Steve and jeff could not get along at Disney . Jeff should have not even offered dreamworks besides think Jeff would have to get the okay from Spielberg and his other partner over any dreamworks sale.
What is that suppose to mean. Comcast be under the gun of the government? no, might wanna read into the things. governement really HAS nothing to do with it now mind you i dont watch TV. and dont have cable of any sort. mostly im active outside, but i enjoy movies and writing and laughing at dumb shmucks on the internet.but if you have problem witht he company dont try and spin it in a different way caus eyou think you’ll get followers. Time Warner anyone?
This is the kind of Nikke reporting that got me hooked in the first place. Please keep them coming!
Would Google buy it? Just to get into the Content business? Animation done right is cheap — all you need is voice actors and a script. Render farms, well Google does that very, very well. If they want a Facebook killer, original Dreamworks Animation content would be a way to go (particularly for younger folks).
A thought.
A scary yet borderline brilliant thought.
a scary thought, indeed, AND idiotic. Actors and a script is all you need for quality animation? This person has no idea what they are talking about.
A Facebook killer? Seriously? Two completely different experiences.
Yes and all live action needs is a camera and a few actors. You’re an uniformed and ignorant ass. Read the credit list of any animated feature and you might just get a sense of how much work and how many talented craftspersons and artists it takes to make animation. Of course that presumes you can read…
chill bro
The families of the residents of the Motion Picture Home’s LTC should pool their money together to buy Dreamworks so we can show Jeff what it’s liked to be kicked to the curb.
Has anyone read “The Men Who Would Be King” by Nicole Laporte? Hello! Prince of Egypt, El Dorado, Shrek 3!!!! Losers – why would anyone want to buy Dreamworks Animation?
Has anyone read about the chaos and devastation Jeffrey Katzenberg has caused over the past 18 months at the Motion Picture and Television Fund Home in Calabasas? The 90 year old hospital and home is close to ruination with Jeffrey at the helm of the MPTF Boards (yes, he sits on all 3 of the Boards). Lots of talk in the book about Katzenberg investments with Madoff – MPTF $$$$, as well, hmmmmmmm…………..just saying.
That’s how SHREK was made – on a few laptops, cans of Mountain Dew and cannister of Red Vines, and some USC grad students. Voila! DWA!
I would first like to admit that I was very excited about the prospect of Jeffery Bewkes heading the new Time Warner, offering possible mergers and acquiring new companies to strengthen Time Warner’s library.
However I find myself disgusted and disappointed by his decision to miss NBC Universal, and possibility of passing off DreamWorks Animation!!!!! Why buy MGM for only the hobbit. MGM id dead. Buying both DWA and NBCU could have provided Time Warner as a real competitor to Disney and other studios.
