EXCLUSIVE: Is it an exaggeration to say not since Gone with the Wind has the actress casting search for a studio film captured such attention? The decision on who'll play Lisbeth Salander in Sony Pictures Entertainment's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo continues. Director David Fincher tested actresses this week and will hold another testing this Sunday. I've heard that Fincher will test as many as six actresses this time, and the stakes have been raised. Daniel Craig will read alongside the aspirants, and each of them will get the full hair, makeup, wardrobe, and piercings treatment, which wasn't done in the earlier tests. This should give Fincher a sense of who is the best match to play the rogue computer hacking genius -- one of the most complex roles to come along for a young actress in a very long time.
Right now the actresses who are being seriously considered may still include Inception's Ellen Page, Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland), Emily Browning (Sucker Punch), Sarah Snook (Sleeping Beauty), Rooney Mara (The Social Network), Sophie Lowe (Blame) and now French actress Lea Seydoux. Browning and Wasikowska didn't make test deals, while Page sent in her own. Fish Tank discovery Katie Jarvis is a late entry but she isn't testing Sunday.
Sony Pictures will release the first filmed installment of Stieg Larsson's bestselling trilogy of books on December 21, 2011, and will begin production in early fall. Steve Zaillian wrote the script and Scott Rudin is producing. Rudin and Fincher just collaborated on The Social Network.

Mike you’re such a DRAMA QUEEN! Haha! “Not since Gone With the Wind…” spare me.
No kidding! “NOT SINCE THE INVENTION OF FIRE HAS THE HUMAN RACE BEEN SO CAPTURED BY A SINGLE EVENT!!!”
Mike Flemmings’ seriousness just dropped a few notches.
“NOT SINCE THE CREATION OF OUR SOLAR SYSTEM…”
LMFAO. I’m with you. Mike obviously has lost his marbles tonight.
Sorry, Mike–the search for Salander isn’t nearly as huge as the one for Scarlett, which took at least two years, IIRC.
This one is more comparable to the search for Amber in FOREVER AMBER. And that concludes your weekly installment of “Hollywood Hype Nitpicking.”
“Is it an exaggeration…?”
Yes. Yes, it is.
I swear these studio heads are clueless!! Do they watch anything at all on TV to scout for talent that would be a complete match between character and actress! Yes I have ONE particular young actress in mind, and yes she has a body of work! I challenge Mr Rudin and Mr Fincher to give Allison Scagliotti of SyFy’s “Wherehouse 13″ a read through and screen test, and then they will without any doubt know that she is “the One”!! Take a look for yourselves, and tell me what you think!??
AAAAArgh! If these are the choices….please cast the French one. It seems that the only trait Fincher thought was important was her height! So…a bunch of boring….not bad ass sexually or emotionally…not skinny…not flat chested….just short. I will not go any where near a movie where I might see Ellen Page nude and/or having sex with anyone, much less Daniel Craig!
Where on earth is Evan Rachel Wood? Or someone like her?
Not all those actresses are around the same height, are they? I thought the chick from Alice in Wonderland was tall.
Nope….Mia Wasikowska is not tall. But she’s not badass enough for this role.
Watch her in the HBO show InTreatment. She is fantastic in that I can easily see her pulling off the Salander rainbow of emotions
**Pounds head on desk in frustration** Are there REAL American actresses anymore?
Yes, there are real American actresses, Vinnie. The problem is film studios care more about looks than talent so the “real American actresses” are all doing theater. Is it a crazy idea to pluck someone from a Broadway or Off-Broadway play who has been kicking ass 8 times a week but hasn’t gotten a shot in a movie? Based on this list, I guess I’m asking for the impossible. Why not just hire Megan Fox and call it a day.
Hear, hear!
No way is an artist like David Fincher more concerned about an actresses’ height than her talent. I think that’s psycho fans of the book spinning bullshit. Who cares if she’s short or tall? Just make sure I believe the chick is completely fucked up after being brutally raped and totally capable of brutally raping the same guy as revenge.
Ummm…. not everyone has read the book yet. Thanks for the spoiler alert.
Height is a major requirement. It is central to the plot in all three books. If she’s not short and child like, the plot falls apart in several places.
I like Anna Paquin for this. Plus, she fits his height requirement.
Anna Paquin or Keira Knightley would have been my picks for Lisbeth. Both have no problem doing nudity, which is a requirement for the role and they’re older in their mid 20s. They also have the body type for the role. Casting an older actress would be good especially since some of the sex scenes described in the book are graphic and very exploitative.
I wonder if the reason that Paquin’s name wasn’t in any lists was because either no writer thought of her or her availability. I’m sure the start of True Blood S4’s shooting might have overlapped with GWTDT’s shoot and caused TB’s start date to be pushed back. I wasn’t a fan of the suggestion of Kristen Stewart, but I’m sure that the Breaking Dawn shoot put her own of the running in the early stages.
Rooney Mara or Sophie Lowe for this all the way. Hands down. Two very talented, passionate actressess willing to take risks.
there’s no way i see ellen page playing a rogue, street wise female. no way. ellen is like the girl next door, but very smart. this role need the combo of jolie, the rogue of rodriguez and the smart of page but without page. with sex appeal
She’s only the girl next door if you haven’t seen Hard Candy or Mouth to Mouth, or An American Crime. Try any of those movies and see Page metamorphosized from Juno to someone much darker. And these were all films she made in her teens. Think how much more mature she is now in her acting.
May be too many obstacles, but if Anna Chapman, the confessed russian spy can act, her playing Lisbeth Salander would make this film even more of a box office spectacular.
Fear not:
They’ll screw it up as bad as Bridget Fonda for Anne Parillaud.
Fingers crossed for Ellen Page ! I’ve just seen Inception (and now I will rewatch Juno) and I was thinking during the whole film that “damn, she would be a PERFECT Lisbeth”.
See Hard Candy and then imagine her as Lisbeth with the guardian advocate
Absolutely! She would be perfect.
lisbeth had sex appeal! sense of danger in her eyes. Ellen doesn’t have this at all. Think about it. Have you even seen the original??
Did you Americans get some edited version of the novels published over there? Where does it describe Lisbeth as having ’sex appeal’. I remember one line saying that she looks like she has just ‘emerged from a week long orgy’… but that’s not really sex appeal.
…and i was thinking they better not cast her for Lisbeth. She’d be awful. ZERO sex appeal.
You watched Inception and saw EP as Salander? Dude, what the fuck drug did you take? I want some. Seriously, I couldn’t stand EP in Inception. That whole film, I was praying Leo would just turn around and deck her in the face.
This film will be a badly clichéd hollywood afterbirth, literally. None of those actresses will come close to Noomi Rapace’s performance in the Swedish, screen adaptations of the books.
Would it be that awful for Hollywood to have Rapace reprise her role. She speaks perfect English.
I sure hope Charlotte Lapiditte wins the role! Her beauty is ethereal, yet her presence is palpable. And after the Nazis shot up the floor of her father’s house last year, the girl deserves a break.
Evan Rachel Wood is a no brainer. I don’t know another 20 something actress who has the chops, the martial arts skills, the sexuality, the body type and the balls to the wall attitude. Is Alice In Wonderland going to do the nudity? Noomi Rapace actually pierced herself. Is Rooney Mara gonna do that?
If you can’t get Wood….get an unknown and don’t settle! Amy Pascal you said this was not going to pull punches, remember?
Fincher….don’t f this up.
portia doubleday or mary elizabeth winstead
this is ridiculous. Fincher has made his choice..just Rudin and Amy don’t like his choice and are making him do this. They are less than 7 weeks out from shooting.
This is what he gets for turning in a fantastic film to them on time and on budget
(A Social Network) The way Amy and Sony treat A-List Directors is ridiculous.
who’s Fincher’s choice? you really think anyone would tell him what to do? No.
The rumor I heard is that David Fincher wants Rooney Mara who has 2 or 3 scenes in his Facebook movie. I also heard she crapped out in her first screen test but David F believes in her so much that he’s been secretly rehearsing w/her to make sure she’s super prep’d for the next screen test. Its not fair to criticize Sony for being concerned. They are the ones bankrolling the $75 million for the movie to get made. If it flops they eat the cost while David F still walks away with his full paycheck. John Badham was considered an A-List director when he insisted to WB that Bridget Fonda was the only one who could replace Anne Parillaud and we all know how that turned out. If Fincher wants complete creative control w/out input from a studio he should finance his own movies. He can definitely afford it by now.
this is such total bs. fincher’s favorite is so not RM
So true ‘peteNY’, the treatment of A-list directors is one of the pressing issues of our time, practically a national disgrace.
Ridiculous indeed! Thank you for bringing it to the attention of this forum.
It is a pity this is with Sony. They don’t know platinum from aluminum.
What happened to that rock singer Fincher liked?
Yo-Landi from Die Antword was apparently OFFERED the role by Fincher but she (wisely) declined it. For my money, she LOOKS ever bit the Lisbeth role but she has no acting background. I’m a bit surprised that Fincher would have gone so far as to extend an offer for the role to her given the magnitude of the part… but it’s a moot point. It was offered and she declined it, according to a number of sources I read late last week.
Would rather watch Noomi Rapace in The Girl Who Played with Fire for the third time.
I’d rather watch Noomi Rapace in ANY of the three films. She is perfection as Lisbeth. I won’t be able to sit through the Americanized version of this.
Thanks Mike – please keep us updated. Some of us really appreciate it.
On the other hand, Se7en was one great creepy film. If he makes it DAVID FINCHER’S “Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” who knows how it could turn out?
ZODIAC was aces, too–it had a terrific sense of period and the acting was wonderful across the board.
The first person I thought of when I read “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and imagined Lisbeth Salander was a hauntingly beautiful and interesting girl who tried out for but didn’t make American Idol a few years ago, Rose Flack. Maybe it is her life story which gives her gravitas, but Rose Flack would be a brilliant choice.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfmCTNuNyxg
Why can’t he cast the girl from the original film? She was fantastic.
She said that (I’m paraphrasing) she enjoyed playing the part but she’s done with it. She wants to move on to other roles.
she’s too old now. Lisbeth is supposed to be 18ish.
You see the movie chris? Lisbeth’s not ‘18ish’. She’s 24 hard-lived- years old.
@Doug and Skip: Ellen Page could still play a high school freshman tomorrow. ‘Juno’ is Lisbeth Salender? Whatever, guys.
Has to be Ellen Page. Anyone who has actually read the source text knows the role fits her like a glove.
Mia or Emily all the way! Please not Ellen. Zero sex appeal there for the males. Maybe the french girl?
ew.com reported that Natalie Portman had been offered to play Lisbeth Salander, but she turned it down.
http://hollywoodinsider.ew.com/2010/07/28/girl-with-the-dragon-tattoo-casting/
Natalie Portman said that she won’t do nude scenes, and I guees it is why she turned down the role.
http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/news/natalie-portman-has-a-no-boobs-policy-1859494.html
she was nude in that short that accompanied the darjleeing limited wasnt she?
‘discreetly’ nude.
Katie Jarvis from “Fish Tank” is an inspired choice. If you haven’t seen it, do so immediately. She’s fantastic.
she’s a great idea for me! she’s skinny but strong
Yes…Katie Jarvis for the win!
why?????????? we don’t need this movie or want it. It’s just been done.
Thank you.
What happened to the singer Fincher wanted?
The singer had turned down the offer.
http://hollywoodinsider.ew.com/2010/07/28/girl-with-the-dragon-tattoo-casting/
I hate that Hollywood is remaking this. Whoever they cast in the role, I can’t see them coming close to the perfection Noomi Rapace displayed original Swedish film adaption.
I won’t be surprised if they cast Page, though I think she looks too young for the role.
Anyway, we all know this film is going to suck compared to the original.
if you read the books, she’s supposed to look very young
I don’t understand. I’m reading the second book right now and Lisbeth’s just been mistaken for a child. How old do you think she’s supposed to look?
She’s supposed to look 14 but is 24. it’s got to do with her body I think more than face.
She’s 24 but because of her body she looks about 14.
“Get me a young Joan Jett!!”
What? No Jennifer Lee Wiggins. Some roles are tailor made, but hey… let’s just run with the same old, same old.
What no JLo? Someone’s agent is going to get hell.
Ellen Page is fantastic in INCEPTION. And she’s been exceptional in several other films as well! She would be a great choice for this role.
Blake Lively. Yeah, I said it.
I think going with an unknown is a cool idea…but she should still be an experienced actress. Rooney Mara from Nightmare on Elm Street?!?! Never even heard of Sarah Snook or the French girl but neither of their resumes on IMDB seem very extensive. Lisbeth is one of the most emotionally complex and incredibly layered characters to come around in a looooong time. Fincher: If you’re gonna go with an unknown go to NY or London and find a great theater actress who may not be a star but has serious chops. Don’t mess this up, Fincher!!!
Sarah Snook is a theatre actress. She the only contender with a ton of theatre experience and no released movies.
I really hope Browning gets the role. She’d do it justice, I’m sure. She’s very talented.
No way is an artist like David Fincher really more concerned about an actresses’ height than her talent. Who cares if she’s short or tall? Just make sure I believe the chick is completely fucked up after being brutally raped and totally capable of brutally raping the same guy as revenge.
You seriously think Ellen Page is gonna do nudity? You seriously think she’d be believable as someone who is highly sexual? Sleeping with Daniel Craig? No. Please, no. I looked at all the actresses who are in the running, closely, and I am now pulling for Sophie Lowe.
Sophie looks credible for the role, and seems to have a legit acting background….and she’s an unknown.
Lisbeth isn’t highly sexual, so much as randomly, casually sexual. Ellen Page did Hard Candy when she was 17. Here’s a scene from it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgnFIqWPHhI
She’s 6 years older now, so she can play more hard edged, and she can still pull off the adolescent boy look. She’ll have to lose weight, which she can. She did it for her movie An American Crime.
where she played a girl who was starved and tortured by her family.
And if height is so important, she’s 5′ 1″. And she’s 23, just the right age to play Lisbeth.
Kate Jarvis from Fish Tank would have been interesting in this role. But she’s too inexperienced, and having to speak with a Swedish accent might be tough.
Why do people on the internet think they know who is/is not going to “fuck this up”? This isn’t your decision. Criticize the film and the performances once it’s finished and you’ve seen it. If you are intensely, irreversibly pissed that they are “remaking” this film, do yourself the brilliant favor of not seeing it.
I understand fantasy casting can be good fun, but to passionately assume that the movie will be officially fucked if some producer fails to listen to you, moviebuff666 – that is certifiably crazy.
This is not your movie, nor is it Stieg Larsson’s. The rights have been given to David Fincher. His own unique take on the story. DAVID FINCHER’S THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO. Again, if you’re interested, see it. If not, don’t waste your money.
Bullocks!
To cast the male lead first was mistake # 1. Now the most important character has to work with Craig? Horse/cart…
To look for Lisbeth among the actresses mentioned is beyond ridiculous and doesn’t bode well.
It would be better to cast an unknown who’s kick-ass and smart and also can believably sell Lisbeth’s backstory. Then marketing will rely more on the male – but DC isn’t the hot stuff some still believe he is. Horse/cart, like I said, tough spot now. I love Ellen Page but Salander’s shoes are way too big for her.
Evan Rachel Wood may have terrible taste in men but she is an excellent actress. Surely it’s a no-brainer. Does anyone know why she isn’t in the running?
i must agree Evan Rachel Wood is an amazing choice!
Page all the way, she would connect perfectly to the character and just jump off the, well yeah, page. She’s on the verge of becoming one hell of an amazing star. Old soul in an amazing body. Although tiny, she’s very attractive. And to both genders – if that’s not Salander, what is? And I guess she has a thing or two for chicks. Well, that’s Lisbeth to you.
I know my gf would love her as the character. She thought Rapace was looking too much like a pretending fashion model.
“Brothers” was a distinct improvement on a crappy Danish film. The Swedish version of “TGWTDT” is just fine the way it is, just as “Let the Right One In” is, too. I’m really skeptical that an Americanized version could do that much better than the original well-presented.
Watching the Gainsbourg biopic right now and loving it.
I think that a newcomer should definitely play the role. I reckon Eliana Saenz would be great as Lisbeth
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2091584/
He should cast MyAnna Buring, she would be absolutely perfect for this and would keep a Swedish element to the film. She doesn’t even have a Swedish accent but would keep something of lisbeth’s feisty strong side.
Noomi Rapace was excellent in the swedish adaption – and there will probably never be anyone better. She displayed the inner turmoil and the fire of Lisbeth in one jerk of her head, she IS Lisbeth with her whole being. And I can’t seem to see it in the 6 girls. The seem bloodless or just too innocent, young, unexperinced, fresh… I can’t see that fire.
Maybe they should search in a broader range of age…? Noomi is 31…
No I want to see Katie Jarvis get the role purely for the reason that when I saw her in Fish tank earlier this year I was completely hooked and have waited patiently ever since with Katie Jarvis google alerts to see her in another role.
She would be perfect as the girl with the broken scarred past but still holding up and fighting back, come to think of it, its almost her role in Fish Tank
Just MHO but I really can’t wait to see Katie again .
We all know it should be Natalie Portman and, as for her not doing sex… um, CLOSER had her down to her skivies…
I just think Page is to brainy-meek and the commercials of late HURT her believability.
Pascal et al would never approve it, but someone like Rachel Bilson could get it done physically and, with good coaching, deliver the star turn…
But the parallels as to LA FEMME NIKITA becoming NIKITA are to apropos to ignore… THEY WILL NEUTER THIS GRAND DAME BITCH EVEN WITH FINCHER AT THE HELM!
You watch.
Ellen Page. Naked.
Or just cast a 13 year old boy.
eew.
Why oh WHY are they remaking this movie? Can you imagine theis scenario, “Hey that Picasso’s GUERNICA really grabbed viewers, let’s make another just like it?????”
Now there’s a thought, Frankie. But let’s bend it in a circle, make a carousel in full color.
They should go with Anna Paquin. She has the sexuality to pull of the role, she’s not afraid of nudity, she’s hot off True Blood, and she’s a talented actress. Her name should be on that list.
Jennifer Lawrence gave such a strong performance in Winter’s Bone, why isn’t she up for this role?
cause she made a LOUSY business decision and took x-men: first class for the cash. confict
Ellen Page would be perfect for the role…cannot understand the venom some have directed at her. Anyone who saw her in Hard Candy
knows that Ellen is great for the Lisbeth role.
Regardless of how good the Swedish film may be, may moviegoers do not watch foreign films. So there is a large audience to be tapped domestically, even if they are taking a chance on the movie’s international gross.
Regarding Ellen Page: After seeing Health Ledger as the Joker, I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss an actor without some hint that they’d be unable to fulfill the demands of a dramatic role. This could be a breakout movie for her.
Regarding Natalie Portman: There’s a big difference between doing scenes in lingerie and doing them naked.
The dark horse should be Alison Lohman. Saw her in “Gamer” the other day and immediately thought about her in this role. I actually think she could pull it off and deserves to be considered.
Alison Lohman would be good.
alison lohman is like well into her 30s trying to play a teenager still. no thanks
VANESSA BURNS would be amazing in this role. She’s an unknown Canadian actress but has the right look and vibe.
http://www.imdb.me/vanessaburns
Ellen Page is a terrific actress but totally wrong for the role. She is smart, witty, ironic but lacks what is vitally important to the role… a smoldering sexuality, almost predatory. Not a la bombshells but of a dangerous woman. So do most of the actresses being mentioned. That’s a quality that made Noomi Rapace so magnetic as Lisbeth and makes the original character so compelling. While the idea of an unknown is interesting, of today’s 20-something stars, I vote for Zoe Saldana.
Thank you for having a clue about the fact that Lisbeth’s smoldering sexuality is dangerous, unpredictable and downright scary. AND I agree that none of these actresses has that, with the exception of the unknown aussie, Sophie Lowe, because I just don’t know her to comment. Also, that LIsbeth ISN’T a bombshell type, but a predatory WAIF. That makes her thrice as interesting. Imagine ANGELINA JOLIE WITHOUT THE BOOBS and the lips!!
BUT I DONT agree that Zoe Saldana has it either….and I still maintain that EVAN RACHEL WOOD is the only young, very thin, badass actress that can really act that has the right quality.
Yes, I bought it when Ellen Page tied Patrick Wilson up and castrated him. No, I wouldn’t never believed she would f*ck the shit out of him. End of that.
Or, try and picture any of these girl going toe to toe with Jolie in bed.
Please Pascal! Get us a chick who won’t flinch!
Sorry but I’m not jumping on the Noomi bandwagon. I read the book and the most I can say about Noomi’s performance was that she looked the part and had lots of attitude. But the character is more complex than that and I didn’t see any of that in Noomi sorry. I think she fulfilled the visuals so well most everyone filled in the rest for her. In the hands of Fincher this could be a better movie than the first one. Ellen Page, if she has the ability I hope she has, could deliver a Lisbeth that will break your heart AND chill your bones. I enjoyed the first movie but with some Hollywood slick and Fincher working his magic it could be one for the best of lists in many countries.
amen!
I was so upset when Emily Browning was no longer in the running for the role. She would have been perfect. However, Emily did not voluntarily leave the running. The article that confirmed the four actresses stated that she is still interested in the role. However, she did not audition, but still wants the role. She would have been perfect, I’m glad she is still being considered, though not seriously.
I think any of the actresses would have been good, but please not Sarah Snook. She does not look like Lisbeth in any way shape or form. It would be a mistake to cast her. I hope we find out soon and I am so happy that they are doing more screen tests. I’m glad there are more being considered. Ellen will not get the role mainly because she is too famous. I have a feeling that either LEA SEYDOUX or ROONEY MARA will be cast.
Seydoux has connections within the film industry that spans worldwide and she has appeared in several high profile films. But, in smaller roles. Rooney Mara knows the director very well, so she also has an advantage. But, I still feel Browning would have been the best choice and I’m still upset that she was turned down.
Love Katie Jarvis…but what about up and coming Brit actress Felicity Jones? She’s beautiful and talented.
who did zaillian picture while writing the script?
I thik they can find a better figure .
I’m clueless as to why Evan Rachel Wood isn’t being considered a front runner for this part! She’s the only actress with the grit to take on a heavy role like this and be able to pull it off convincingly….why haven’t Jena Malone or Christina Ricci been mentioned? These are ladies that have the talent to be opposite Craig….
I have to assume that Wood is uninterested or unavailable. Otherwise, it makes no sense. She’s a black belt as well. Jena Malone would be interesting, but I’m not sure she has crazy the sexuality, in fact, I don’t think she does.
Christina Ricci is just too curvy for my taste…but if he’s gonna cast someone like Rooney Mara anyway, hey, why not Christina?
Guess I must be the only one, but I still keep hoping that Kristen Stewart will get further consideration for the role. I think she was born for it, and is far more interesting than the actresses noted in the (yes, rather overstated) article.
Stephanie’s band. She’s in the orange outfit.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjZKFE1vqjY&feature=related
Still think Stephanie Hunt would be the best in the part. She plays Devin in the Friday Night Lights series. Her band she is in,in Austin. T Bird and the Breaks. She rocks. She’s in the stripped top.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0H44HhlOhU
this actress would pull it off hands down ..australian unknown sascha raeburn I just watched this martial arts clip, powerful and so lisbeth! : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKEw7non3fg
Kate Jarvis is a good pick, assuming she tests well; She’s only been in one other film, but it’s a great performance.
(If people are still insisting on throwing out their own choices, I was thinking Brie Larson this past week).
Meg Tilly circa “The Big Chill”
THESE are the choices?????? PLEASE cast the French girl (who I don’t know). This role requires a depth that absolutely none of the other actresses possess. Leave it to Hollywood yet again to not look deeply into acting or script. Jesus. Ellen Page? Are you serious?
This is extremely disappointing and I’m not one of those that always bitches at the choices. But if this is really the list what in the HELL is going on with this movie?
Why not consider P!nk? Although an untested actress, supposedly her screen test for the Joplin movie was fantastic. She has the drive and determination to deliever at all costs. She isnt afraid to be sexual, but there is a danger about her persona. laugh if you want, but I think she would rock.
Ellen Page brought absolutely nothing to her character in Inception. Why not cast like the old days? Give everyone a chance. Maybe they might discover a new talent.
Can’t believe that Natalie Portman never got seriously considered… not just because Salander is pretty much a grown up version of Mathilda from Leon.
I think she’d be perfect for the part, the vulnerability and “can’t put my finger on it” danger that she can portray so well. Plus physically she comes closer than any of the other suggestions as well.
Okay, she’s way too pretty to be Salander but hey, so is Ellen Page, Lea Seydoux and let’s face it, most other actresses considered or not considered at this stage…
I wouldn’t think that Natalie or Ellen would want to be showing anything of themselves in the buff in movies at this length of there careers. I don’t see it as being that prevalent in the new version as a selling point of this movie over the other though. It is part of the story though.
From the Production Weekly twitter its between Roomey Mara and Emily Browning for the role as of left.
Natalie Portman would be fantastic in this role. And her physical frailty would make the aggressive scenes all the more shocking.
Agree with Princess_Dala, Portman would have been perfect
not a “badass” in the bunch. Doesn’t mean they are bad actors, quite the contrary for most. but, here we go again, Hollywood going for the same ole same ole. At least they aren’t considering the hideously untalented Kristin Stewart.
The part has already been cast. It was played excellently by Noomi Rapace. No need to make another.
noone can beat noomi rapace….point!
Why not Evageline Lilly from Lost? She’s tiny, fiesty and clearly sexy enough for the boys. They missed the boat by not including her in the casting.
Ellen Page is so boring to look at. Sure, she has some talent. But this film needs someone sexy and interesting looking.
Salander isn’t supposed to look sexy. She doesn’t define her sexuality but definately isn’t supposed to look sexy!!
I will look forward to seeing this film as long as they don’t cast Ellen Page. She is such a boring choice.
Not interested in a Hollywood version. It’s a Swedish story that’s already been made into perfectly good films and should stay that way. Can American audiences not accept or relate to stories from cultures other than their own?
How many agents are on this topic? I’ve never seen so many names being thrown out there.
SPOILER ALERT!!
Just watched Swedish version of The Girl w/The Dragon Tattoo – if the picture at the top of the thread is any indication of where they’re going with this then it looks like they’re going to sanitize it. The tattoo in the Swedish version is seriously over powering – taking over her entire back – the one above is just a little itty-bitty cutesy tattoo. Will The US version become known as The Girl With the Cutesy Dragon Tattoo? Wait IS that a tattoo or did a bird just crap on her back?
SPOILER ALERT:
Does anyone seriously believe the Hollywood version is going to graphically show the guardian scenes like in the Swedish version?
Doubt it – wouldn’t those scenes rate an NC-17 rating? And NO WAY is a mainstream studio going to put out a film that gets an NC-17 rating. JMO
The picture at the top is the cover we got here in the UK. In the book, the tattoo is described as being dainty and beautiful. The Swedish film made it into a massive thing. The tattoo isn’t a major talking point, it serves as a metaphor: if you get close to her she’ll burn you! Remember that TGWTDT isn’t the original title. Original title is Men Who Hate Women
I think British actress Sally Hawkins would pull off the role as Lisbeth Salander. She’s a great actress and lookwise perfect. The only good thing about the Swedish version was Noomi Rapace… otherwise the films didn’t make justice to the great books of Stieg Larsson. That is my Swedish humble opinion
Well Stephanie Hunt didn’t get picked. Kinda thought it would be a good movie for her. From the youtube vlog the other day it looks like she is working on a indie one now. With Comcast I hear buying NBC I think they will be using the NBC studio more for better movies for adult people to see. She can get into them better than the teen ones.
Katie Jarvis is the only actress that I feel can play Lisbeth nearly as well as Noomi Rapace. Just see her in Fish Tank, and I’m certain you’ll agree. She’s got the looks that are right for the part and the talent to pull it off.
Some people need to read the books again – Salander wasn’t sexy and it’s annoying reading ignorant posts about who is or isn’t sexy enough to play the role. And, although what I think isn’t going to matter, Jena Malone would be a perfect Salander.
People magazine had a poll and Kristen Stewart was picked as who most people wanted to play Lisbeth. After finally seeing The Runaways on DVD, she would be my top choice. She has the right body type and look. In the books, Lisbeth also has a social disorder. Kristen has the mannerisms that the character needs and she’s proven she’s not vain. She would pierce herself and cut her hair for the movie. The problem is she’s going to be filming the last two Twilight films and they pay her way more than this project. I would also have been fine with Keira Knightly. Ellen Page nor Mia W. is right for the part. I knew Carey Mulligan wasn’t going to get it because she is the exact opposite of Lisbeth. None of the above choices excite me. I recommend people go see the original instead.
The People who read People magazine are the exact people who wouldn’t dare read a book or watch a subtitled film.
I can’t think of anyone better than Asia Argento for this role she might be a bit older than Lisbeth but just perfect. Anyone that differ should see Asia acting.
Am still hoping Stephanies name gets chosen. Though if not will likely go see the movie still. They have gotten Stellan Skarsgard and Robin Wright signed in support acts. Looks to not a kiddie movie with them.
Surprised that Thora Birch isn’t at least being considered.
She did Goth in “Ghost World”, and nude in “American Beauty”, has had a relatively long acting career playing alongside plenty of talented actors, does her own stunts, and has a blue belt in karate. She’s petite, Scandinavian features, and is a bit of an unknown relative to Page, Wasakowska, et al.

Katie Jarvis, true grit,Brit, voted best british newcomer, would be great choice, and a challange for Katie to get her teeth into . Hope you get it , your are worth the risk.
Totally agreed! I saw all three movies and there is no need to remake them, they are just perfect. Cast and directing is top notch and I highly doubt that american version of this movie will include some very important scenes and regard them as non appropriated for conservative american eyes. Leave European cinematography alone.
P.s. You lost the muse, Hollywood??
I think Sandra !!! Defianatly could pull this off,Oh She would and Angie not her Why She’s Tall And Beautifull!!! But, I also know Jessica Alba Could handle this Role !!! Just My Opiniun !
Really wish Kaya Scodelario was in the mix. Can’t imagine anyone as perfect.
