EXCLUSIVE: Is it an exaggeration to say not since Gone with the Wind has the actress casting search for a studio film captured such attention? The decision on who’ll play Lisbeth Salander in Sony Pictures Entertainment’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo continues. Director David Fincher tested actresses this week and will hold another testing this Sunday. I’ve heard that Fincher will test as many as six actresses this time, and the stakes have been raised. Daniel Craig will read alongside the aspirants, and each of them will get the full hair, makeup, wardrobe, and piercings treatment, which wasn’t done in the earlier tests. This should give Fincher a sense of who is the best match to play the rogue computer hacking genius – one of the most complex roles to come along for a young actress in a very long time.
Right now the actresses who are being seriously considered may still include Inception’s Ellen Page, Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland), Emily Browning (Sucker Punch), Sarah Snook (Sleeping Beauty), Rooney Mara (The Social Network), Sophie Lowe (Blame) and now French actress Lea Seydoux. Browning and Wasikowska didn’t make test deals, while Page sent in her own. Fish Tank discovery Katie Jarvis is a late entry but she isn’t testing Sunday.
Sony Pictures will release the first filmed installment of Stieg Larsson’s bestselling trilogy of books on December 21, 2011, and will begin production in early fall. Steve Zaillian wrote the script and Scott Rudin is producing. Rudin and Fincher just collaborated on The Social Network.

What no JLo? Someone’s agent is going to get hell.
Ellen Page is fantastic in INCEPTION. And she’s been exceptional in several other films as well! She would be a great choice for this role.
Blake Lively. Yeah, I said it.
I think going with an unknown is a cool idea…but she should still be an experienced actress. Rooney Mara from Nightmare on Elm Street?!?! Never even heard of Sarah Snook or the French girl but neither of their resumes on IMDB seem very extensive. Lisbeth is one of the most emotionally complex and incredibly layered characters to come around in a looooong time. Fincher: If you’re gonna go with an unknown go to NY or London and find a great theater actress who may not be a star but has serious chops. Don’t mess this up, Fincher!!!
Sarah Snook is a theatre actress. She the only contender with a ton of theatre experience and no released movies.
I really hope Browning gets the role. She’d do it justice, I’m sure. She’s very talented.
No way is an artist like David Fincher really more concerned about an actresses’ height than her talent. Who cares if she’s short or tall? Just make sure I believe the chick is completely fucked up after being brutally raped and totally capable of brutally raping the same guy as revenge.
You seriously think Ellen Page is gonna do nudity? You seriously think she’d be believable as someone who is highly sexual? Sleeping with Daniel Craig? No. Please, no. I looked at all the actresses who are in the running, closely, and I am now pulling for Sophie Lowe.
Sophie looks credible for the role, and seems to have a legit acting background….and she’s an unknown.
Lisbeth isn’t highly sexual, so much as randomly, casually sexual. Ellen Page did Hard Candy when she was 17. Here’s a scene from it:

She’s 6 years older now, so she can play more hard edged, and she can still pull off the adolescent boy look. She’ll have to lose weight, which she can. She did it for her movie An American Crime.
where she played a girl who was starved and tortured by her family.
And if height is so important, she’s 5′ 1″. And she’s 23, just the right age to play Lisbeth.
Kate Jarvis from Fish Tank would have been interesting in this role. But she’s too inexperienced, and having to speak with a Swedish accent might be tough.
Why do people on the internet think they know who is/is not going to “fuck this up”? This isn’t your decision. Criticize the film and the performances once it’s finished and you’ve seen it. If you are intensely, irreversibly pissed that they are “remaking” this film, do yourself the brilliant favor of not seeing it.
I understand fantasy casting can be good fun, but to passionately assume that the movie will be officially fucked if some producer fails to listen to you, moviebuff666 – that is certifiably crazy.
This is not your movie, nor is it Stieg Larsson’s. The rights have been given to David Fincher. His own unique take on the story. DAVID FINCHER’S THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO. Again, if you’re interested, see it. If not, don’t waste your money.
Bullocks!
To cast the male lead first was mistake # 1. Now the most important character has to work with Craig? Horse/cart…
To look for Lisbeth among the actresses mentioned is beyond ridiculous and doesn’t bode well.
It would be better to cast an unknown who’s kick-ass and smart and also can believably sell Lisbeth’s backstory. Then marketing will rely more on the male – but DC isn’t the hot stuff some still believe he is. Horse/cart, like I said, tough spot now. I love Ellen Page but Salander’s shoes are way too big for her.
Evan Rachel Wood may have terrible taste in men but she is an excellent actress. Surely it’s a no-brainer. Does anyone know why she isn’t in the running?
i must agree Evan Rachel Wood is an amazing choice!
Page all the way, she would connect perfectly to the character and just jump off the, well yeah, page. She’s on the verge of becoming one hell of an amazing star. Old soul in an amazing body. Although tiny, she’s very attractive. And to both genders – if that’s not Salander, what is? And I guess she has a thing or two for chicks. Well, that’s Lisbeth to you.
I know my gf would love her as the character. She thought Rapace was looking too much like a pretending fashion model.
“Brothers” was a distinct improvement on a crappy Danish film. The Swedish version of “TGWTDT” is just fine the way it is, just as “Let the Right One In” is, too. I’m really skeptical that an Americanized version could do that much better than the original well-presented.
Watching the Gainsbourg biopic right now and loving it.
I think that a newcomer should definitely play the role. I reckon Eliana Saenz would be great as Lisbeth
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2091584/
He should cast MyAnna Buring, she would be absolutely perfect for this and would keep a Swedish element to the film. She doesn’t even have a Swedish accent but would keep something of lisbeth’s feisty strong side.
Noomi Rapace was excellent in the swedish adaption – and there will probably never be anyone better. She displayed the inner turmoil and the fire of Lisbeth in one jerk of her head, she IS Lisbeth with her whole being. And I can’t seem to see it in the 6 girls. The seem bloodless or just too innocent, young, unexperinced, fresh… I can’t see that fire.
Maybe they should search in a broader range of age…? Noomi is 31…
No I want to see Katie Jarvis get the role purely for the reason that when I saw her in Fish tank earlier this year I was completely hooked and have waited patiently ever since with Katie Jarvis google alerts to see her in another role.
She would be perfect as the girl with the broken scarred past but still holding up and fighting back, come to think of it, its almost her role in Fish Tank
Just MHO but I really can’t wait to see Katie again .
We all know it should be Natalie Portman and, as for her not doing sex… um, CLOSER had her down to her skivies…
I just think Page is to brainy-meek and the commercials of late HURT her believability.
Pascal et al would never approve it, but someone like Rachel Bilson could get it done physically and, with good coaching, deliver the star turn…
But the parallels as to LA FEMME NIKITA becoming NIKITA are to apropos to ignore… THEY WILL NEUTER THIS GRAND DAME BITCH EVEN WITH FINCHER AT THE HELM!
You watch.
Ellen Page. Naked.
Or just cast a 13 year old boy.
eew.
Why oh WHY are they remaking this movie? Can you imagine theis scenario, “Hey that Picasso’s GUERNICA really grabbed viewers, let’s make another just like it?????”
Now there’s a thought, Frankie. But let’s bend it in a circle, make a carousel in full color.
They should go with Anna Paquin. She has the sexuality to pull of the role, she’s not afraid of nudity, she’s hot off True Blood, and she’s a talented actress. Her name should be on that list.
Jennifer Lawrence gave such a strong performance in Winter’s Bone, why isn’t she up for this role?
cause she made a LOUSY business decision and took x-men: first class for the cash. confict
Ellen Page would be perfect for the role…cannot understand the venom some have directed at her. Anyone who saw her in Hard Candy
knows that Ellen is great for the Lisbeth role.
Regardless of how good the Swedish film may be, may moviegoers do not watch foreign films. So there is a large audience to be tapped domestically, even if they are taking a chance on the movie’s international gross.
Regarding Ellen Page: After seeing Health Ledger as the Joker, I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss an actor without some hint that they’d be unable to fulfill the demands of a dramatic role. This could be a breakout movie for her.
Regarding Natalie Portman: There’s a big difference between doing scenes in lingerie and doing them naked.
The dark horse should be Alison Lohman. Saw her in “Gamer” the other day and immediately thought about her in this role. I actually think she could pull it off and deserves to be considered.
Alison Lohman would be good.
alison lohman is like well into her 30s trying to play a teenager still. no thanks
VANESSA BURNS would be amazing in this role. She’s an unknown Canadian actress but has the right look and vibe.
