10TH UPDATE, THURSDAY 11 PM: No. 1 at the North American box office was the Twilight Saga: Eclipse with what looks like $24.2M today for a new cume of $92.8M and $110M for 5 days with a total of $178M for the 6-day July Fouth Holiday since Wednesday. That would put the pic just shy of Spider-Man 2 which holds the July 4th holiday record with $180M.
9TH UPDATE, THURSDAY 3:30 PM: Summit Entertainment is disclosing that THE TWILIGHT SAGA: Eclipse had “an incredible start” internationally. Despite great weather and the World Cup, Eclipse launched with an estimated $19M from 22 markets. The only major territories that opened on June 30th were Italy, Brazil, and Russia. Other majors like Spain, Australia and Mexico launch today. France, Germany, S. Korea and Japan will launch in the weeks to come. Here are some highlights of opening day results: Eclipse Kicks Off Big International Run
8TH UPDATE, THURSDAY 8 AM: I can report now that the 3rd film in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Saga series of novels is off to a record-breaking start at the North American box office. Summit Entertainment’s ECLIPSE opened to $68.5 million today which shattered the best-ever $62 million for a Wednesday single day opening set last summer by Paramount’s Transformers 2. That $68.5M included Eclipse‘s record-setting $30M from Wednesday 12:01 AM and 3 AM showings at more than 4,000 theaters in the U.S. and Canada. Eclipse also registered the biggest single day opening during the summer play period, besting The Dark Knight‘s $67.2M. But the Twilight saga’s 2nd film, New Moon, still holds the largest single day opening record of $72 million. Eclipse is playing in 4,416 domestic locations, which sets another record for the biggest ever release in Hollywood history, surpassing Iron Man 2‘s 4,380 venues.
Stay tuned for the David Slade-directed Eclipse starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner from Melissa Rosenberg’s script to set more records over this 6-day July 4th holiday weekend. I’ve learned that 57% of the audience attending opening day did so because of the “subject matter”, while 36% did so because of the actor in the lead role, and 15% because of the actress in the lead role. Eclipse received a Cinemascore overall grade of “A” with 92% of moviegoers giving the pic an A or B.
7TH UPDATE, WEDNESDAY 11 PM:
My sources tonight peg today’s Eclipse opening number from 4,416 theaters to $65M, which breaks the best ever $62 million for a Wednesday opening set last summer by Paramount’s Transformers 2. That $65M includes Eclipse‘s record-setting $30M from Wednesday 12:01 AM and 3 AM showings at more than 4,000 theaters in the U.S. and Canada. But the Twilight saga’s 2nd film, New Moon, still holds the largest movie single day opening record of $72 million.
6TH UPDATE, WEDNESDAY 10:45 AM: ECLIPSE opened in excess of $30M from 12:01 AM and 3 AM screenings at over 4,000 North American theaters today for a new record. It bested the midnights record of New Moon’s $26.3M. IMAX also set a midnights record, taking in over $1M at 192 theaters and besting Transformers 2‘s $959K.
5TH UPDATE, WEDNESDAY 8 AM: Photos and anecdotes from around the USA are pouring into me overnight and this morning from the 12:01 AM and 3 AM Eclipse screenings at 4,000+ North American theaters today.
Long snaking lines formed for Summit Entertainment’s third movie in the Twilight Saga franchise at the AMC Highlands Ranch just south of Denver around 4 PM Tuesday for all 2,600 seats of the sold-out midnight shows. At the Cinemark Theatre in Orem, just outside of Salt Lake City, lines began forming in the early afternoon and were wrapped around the building by 9 PM. Long queues were sighted at the Cinemark Valley View in Cleveland. Same scene at the AMC Tyson’s Corner Movie Theater , a suburb of Washington DC. The first line formed at 8 PM Tuesday at the AMC Garden State Plaza in Paramus, a suburb of NYC. Twi-Hards in Detroit were out in force at the MJR Marketplace where people who’d pledged allegiance to the Cullen family or the Wolf Pack waited hours in line. All 20 theaters were sold out for their midnight showings. Fans indulged in trivia and in detailed Edward vs. Jacob debates while they waited in line wearing their Twilight Saga T-shirts. In Bellevue outside Seattle, 1,300 people stood in line for midnight shows at Lincoln Square. Crowds also formed in LA, Manhattan, and Chicago.
TUESDAY 11PM: I can report that theaters are mobbed by Twi-hards at Wednesday 12:01 AM screenings in Boston, NYC, Washington DC, Paramus N.J., Detroit, Cleveland, Denver, Salt Lake City, Bellevue WA, as well as in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Brazil, Mexico, Philippines, Belgium, Netherlands, Poland, Africa, Hungary, and Finland.
Because unless you dwell underground or are a heterosexual male (just kidding), then you know that theaters across the U.S. and Canada and overseas are crowded with females of all ages for the opening of Eclipse. They need their feature film fix of heroine Bella deciding between Team Jacob vs Team Edward played by Kristin Stewart, Taylor Lautner, and Robert Pattinson as novelized by Stephenie Meyer and scripted by Melissa Rosenberg.
Around noon today I broke the news that Summit Entertainment is releasing the third movie in the Twilight Saga franchise into a record 4,416 theaters in North America. That’s the biggest ever in Hollywood history, surpassing Iron Man 2 which scored 4,380 venues. Over 4,000 theaters in North America ran 12:01 AM screenings Wednesday of the film including all 193 IMAX locations. Several theater chains and 120 IMAX theaters also programmed 3:00 AM screenings to meet fan demand. The movie currently accounts for 91% of Fandango’s daily online ticket sales. From Fandango’s most recent survey of more than 1,000 Eclipse ticket-buyers: Eclipse has stronger date night appeal than New Moon or Twilight and its action is a bigger draw than before. At this point it is expected that additional theaters will be added for Friday, July 2nd. Just how many will be known in the next day or two.
Internationally the film will debut this week in 42 territories including Australia, Italy, Spain, Russia, Mexico, Brazil, Belgium, Netherlands, Philippines, Turkey, Argentina, Chile, New Zealand, Greece, Poland, Portugal, Hungary, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, among others.
The studio isn’t playing the lowering expectations game this time around; Summit execs know Eclipse is going to be huge. The only question is whether it’ll surpass the Twilight sequel New Moon which was the biggest yet. ”New Moon set the bar so high as a cultural phenomenon that Eclipse can only try to reach that number,” a Summit exec told me. A lot is going to depend on whether Eclipse will attract more men because of its high-octane vampires vs werewolves brawling directed by 30 Days Of Night horror film helmer David Slade.
Going into Wednesday, 3 of the 4 major tracking services pegged Eclipse to New Moon numbers: an opening weekend of $142.8M domestic (and an eventual worldwide total of $710M). It’s likely that Eclipse’s front-loaded 6-day opening could gross anywhere from $150M to $179M. (Spider-Man 2 holds the July 4th holiday record with $180M.) All on a budget of just $68M. That fact alone makes the major studios green with envy.
The fandemonium has been frenzied for months: the TWILIGHT SAGA Facebook page now has 6.665 million fans. It’s the largest of all the film pages, with more fans than Iron Man, Harry Potter, Transformers, and Toy Story Facebook pages combined. So many Twi-hards stood in line in advance of last week’s Eclipse premiere that Summit Entertainment had to set up two tent cities in Downtown Los Angeles. Eclipse has been both Fandango’s and MovieTickets.com’s top advance ticket-seller of the year. This week, Entertainment Weekly, the official magazine of receptionists, has a cover line proclaiming Eclipse the “best of the Twilight Saga so far”.

I’ll go ahead and say it and get crucified… But Dark Knight is going down.
Dark Knight is going down? YOU ARE NUTS.
Unclear whether the original poster was talking about opening weekend or cume. I agree with you that I don’t believe Eclipse is going to crack $534M domestic. But if we’re just talking about opening weekend, then Eclipse only has $129M to go to beat TDK, and that frighteningly seems doable.
Not DK but bye bye silly dancing freak Spidey 2 record….
ALICE IN WONDERLAND already beat DARK KNIGHT this year so beating Dark Knight isn’t saying much anymore.
Well, it’s already ahead by 1.2 million over TDK’s opening day. We’ll see what happens Monday morning.
I went to a midnight showing in Cincinnati. They showed it on all 18 screens and sold out every show. I’ve never seen anything like it. Girls in pajamas from Twilight slumber parties. It was crazy. The single-day box office record is in serious jeopardy.
that is too funny. good for the business!
How is the opening day record in jeopardy?
Do you really see it making another $40 million today? I don’t think that’s possible… right now, the IMAX theater still has tickets left for both evening shows, whereas Avatar was completely sold-out by four. Way too much demand will be burned off from the midnight shows; New Moon only had a 2.5 multiplier, and how many teenage girls could sleep in today vs. November?
I can’t really see it getting above $65M today… maybe even as low as $58m. Maybe it could have broken records if it’d opened on another Friday, but as it stands, I think you’ll be able to get a ticket just fine Saturday night.
correct me if I am wrong, but isn’t the opening day record held by New Moon? I think they beat out DK on that. But they didnt beat DK’s opening weekend.
Acctually, as you can see it made 68.5 million breaking Dark Knight’s opening of 67 mill., however it was unable to break the highest single day opening held by the saga’s 2nd movie, New Moon’s of 72 million. I dont see how Avatar can be brought into the conversation considering the discussion is about ‘single day openings’ not the ability to get tickets on another day. I agree though that tickets will be easy to get nonetheless, and that demand will probably burn off. Plus I see what you mean by people being able to sleep in or go to midnight showings because of the summer opening in comparison to the other openings all being in November during the school year.
Now maybe Hollywood will stop catering to the boys – big and small!
Fine by me if there are less guy movies…d**m theater food and, increasingly so, the ticket prices really are getting ridiculous!!
I these price trends continue I hope people will have the good God-given sense to start cutting down sharply their movie-going to send a message to the fat cat film studies and the over paid stars and film executives to keep prices more reasonable.
Let’s hope not. Sure “man” movies can have some bad plots. But next to singing blood and sparkly-in-the-sun skin, Transformers looks well-written.
Good thing we have people like Girlpower to spew their hateful, anachronistic rigmarole on the Twilight platform. Hollywood should obviously borrow some of your misandry; that way, we can have lots of movies that flame out within seconds of their release, receive terrible reviews and finally rot on the shelf.
Is everyone too busy gushing about the inconsequential midnight record to notice the opening day take was short of New Moon? It wasn’t hard to predict: New Moon’s trailer promised high stakes, action scenes and possible bloodletting. Eclipse lacks that appeal; it feels like an obligatory middle-child as we await the final installments. It may be better than the first two (Not a high bar to reach), but it’s definitely not making the same money.
Harry Potter 6 free-fell 62% Wed-to-Thur, so how will Eclipse make more than $25m today? This series is ephemeral and it always has been; it’s a one-day box office defibrillator. The three-day weekend will probably be short of $60m, and then all anyone writes about are the staggering declines. I wouldn’t be surprised if it fails to make $200m domestic.
WOW, IT WAS AN AWESOME NIGHT! AT CARMIKE IN ATHENS, GEORGIA THEY HAD ONLY ONE THEATER SHOWING ALL THREE SAGAS…MIDNIGHT THEY SHOWED THE ECLIPSE! THE AUDIENCE WAS FUN, RESPONSIVE, FELT LIKE I WAS 15 ALL OVER AGAIN! I’M A TWI-MOM YOU MIGHT SAY..MY DAUGHTER-IN-LAW GOT ME INTERESTED AND NOW I’M HOOKED BY EDWARD’S FANGS!! LOL!! CARMIKE RAN ECLIPSE IN 10 OF ITS THEATERS MIDNIGHT TUESDAY…THANKS FOR A GOOD TIME CARMIKE!!!
Too narrow an audience for those numbers. It’ll have 2 good weeks then taper off as the other films did.
I wish I could agree with you. Narrow audience, but the type that will see it multiple times. Becauase of their rabid nature, I think this craptastic drivel will do huge numbers for 3 to 4 weeks.
The last one tapered off to over $700 million.
I’ll be fascinated to see if all those who argued that The Dark Knight should have had better Oscar recognition because of its popularity will be making the same argument for this.
It wasn’t necessarily just the fact that it made a ton of money and was popular with a widespread audience across all demographics. The movie deserved recognition as a film in its own right because of it’s combination of acting, writing, cinematography and everything else that came together for it. Reviews for Twilight movies have always said that the acting is terrible and the story is weak whether because it’s adapted from generic material or whatnot. I won’t argue that they are immensely successful commercial films, but no one outside of the target audience would even think they are worth even an honorary Oscar (for Most Longing Glances In A Film).
exactly. but try to tell this to the nutcase fangirls. “oh Dark Knight will fall”… why not Avatar losers?
No, because The Dark Knight had overwhelming financial success and, more importantly, critical raves outside of it’s pre-existing fanbase. Twilight is missing one of those things.
aaaaaaaaaaw,the critics!!!
You do make a valid point. But to me the Oscar has lost much of its original prestige. These days I rely on one question:”AM I willing to buy this movie on disk?”
think they meant genuine popularity, respect for descent acting, story telling etc, twilight movies are fast food films.
Maybe… but Harry Potter will take them both down in November.
I really don’t think Harry Potter will break this record. Ever since Twilight first came out the excitement is always more than Harry Potter. Many votes and polls have showed that.
Just to add, Harry Potter has the longevity though.
u have got to be kidding me!!!!!!!!!
Uhhh, Teddy…Dark Knight has already gone down. Twilight 2 beat Dark Knight’s opening day ($72 million to $67 million).
Unless you mean that Dark Knight’s opening weekend gross will be beat by Eclipse? In that case, you are wrong. Eclipse will maybe make about half of Dark Knight’s opening weekend over its opening weekend.
And if you mean that Eclipse’s first three days will beat Dark Knight’s first 3 days, you will also be wrong. Eclipse will drop by at least 50% in its second day.
So, what exactly did you mean?
Opening day record, yes. As for opening weekend gross… not by a long shot. Even if it did open July 2nd.
The highest this movie will gross will be around $300M domestic, no less. It’d have to have better legs than the previous two movies to get close to $400M, though.
Twilight wont touch even Revenge of the Sith’s record midnight showing tally… it needs about $60m to do that it is only at $30m.
Good luck!
Let’s get this Estrogen party started!! Bring on the longing looks and slow motion shots!!
LMAO!!!!!!
Take THAT critics! So tired of these snobby ass critics who just don’t get it. Obviously they are missing something.
This has to be one of the dumbest comments I have ever read on a board. The critics are right – these movies are terrible in every sense of the word except to teeny-boppers. The acting is terrible, the story is terrible, even the music is the majority of the time terrible. No critic in their right mind would say it was good. Are you insane?
A corection “teeny-boopers” in heat.
As long as the severely ignorant and clueless in Hollywood continue to hold atttudes like this one, that the audience and demo of films like Twilight are ‘teenyboppers,’ they will continue to ‘lose and/or leave money on the table.’ Ignorant viewpoints such as this one, will prevent studios from seeing what the next ‘twilight,’ to come down the pike even IS, as they don’t have a clue about the demographic. I just came back from a showing, there were NO teens in my theater only grown asss women. Take a look at the pictures at who comprised tent city, or was standing in line for the midnight and 3am showings — these are ADULTS, people. I think it makes the male oriented and run industry feel better to think these are kids – they can be snarky and dismissive, and they also can claim to know the market better than an adult female market, in which, very obviously, adult females in the industry might have a better insight into – if they admit that, that means more women being hired, promoted, on the premise that they have insight into what might sell next with these kinds of numbers. But if you’re a male suit, saying it’s a kiddie pic, is safer. It’s very obvious it is NOT. Until that fact is recognized – Hollywood will continue to miss the boat.
I find that hard to believe. But if you’re right, that’s incredibly sad that grown women have to resort to 17 year old boys with their shirts off to get excited about anything.
AMEN PETER! I tried to watch the first one with an open mind. I get the fascination of the majority of fans (teenage girls), but nothing about these movies are GOOD.
The acting is terrible, script worse, effects average at best, scoring meh.
Then you look at a blockbuster like…Dark Knight, incredible cast, visually stunning, effects perfected by minimal use of cgi, and a rock solid story line, with layers of philosophy underneath it all.
Twilight movies will generate tons of cash, but no one is looking to these movies as true cinematic gems. If you think they are…you are sadly mistaken. If the critics ever got something right, its lambasting these movies.
Most of the adult Twilight book fans agree that the movies are not great. We will still go and see them though. We LOVE the books, and it’s fun to see them come to life.
As a guy who checked out New Moon to see what the deal was, I find your comment condescending. Many times, people who want to dismiss the Twilight phenomenon dismisses it as teen based. That is factually incorrect. While teens are somewhat overrepresented only because teens see more movies, Twilight appeals to all women who haven’t gone throug menopause. Maybe it’s the classic love triangle thing. I don’t know, but dismissing it for kids is rude and wrong. Ther real problem is that almost all critics are male. If almost all critics were female, these movies would get a far higher rating, and movies with explosions would get a far lower one. Just saying.
You need to be a true fan of the Twilight Saga books first of all and after watching the movies you fall in love with the characters. You need to have an open mind and be reminded of what romance and true love is all about and if you haven’t experienced this you don’t know what all the hype is all about. Around the world us “Twihards” whether it be “teeny boopers”, Twi moms, Twi grandmothers, whatever, we all love the story and have fallen in love with the characters and their love story…… don’t be so cynical—live a little and let your mind wonder!!
The word on “Eclipse” is that it’s much improved from the previous films. Richard Roeper said, in spite of himself, he thought it was one of the best movies of the year.
Let’s bear in mind how bad this summer has been for movies…
No, the word is NOT better. That’s a lie perpetuated by the film studio that put out the movie (which is pretty embarassing considering the lie entails their admission that the other two Twilight movies were pure dreck.)
Any reviewer worth his or her salt has worked to try to shoot that lie down since it’s made the rounds by including a line in their critique about how the film is JUST AS BAD as the other two debacles. But I see some people are still busy little bees trying to inject this fallacy into the public mindset so it takes hold and can never be dislodged.
there are some critics (reliable) who gave this movie a positive review. Are you implying that they are under Summit’s pocket?
I think they mean “better for guys” since most critics are guys. But they don’t say that because it would be embarrassing so they just say better.
I disliked the first one, hated the second one and yes, the third one is better. It’s no classic, but at least it’s watchable and moves at a good clip. There’s actually more to the story for once than just sulking and staring.
It’s re-worked material for sure, but there were clever twists from the beginning. Making the vamps day-walkers because its cloudy in Washington state – on one went there before or thought to do it. Mystic scenes with psycho dribble that you may want to believe – it’s enough for some to like. I’ve heard people tell me that the music made the films. Critics do themselves a disservice by trying to create a couture where one doesn’t exist. For example, people eat food from a restaurant because it may be good food – I don’t need the chef to be a snob to convince me. I didn’t go to see the chef.
I agree those movies are awful. Very Boring movies. Must be some subliminal messages. Even the older girls like these movies..that are mothers! all the way up to 40′s… some obsessed with them!!
Is it me or have women just changed sooo much since 2004 or 2005? It is messaging and texting that is the root that has changed everything for women.. they think they deserve anything and everything and cannot feel alone for 1 minute. I think technology (smart phones), movies and media have really damamged and brainwashed today’s woman. Its really sad that almost no one reall sees this. I do.
Just because a movie makes a lot of money doesn’t mean the critics are wrong and the people who wait in line at midnight to see a movie about a vapid teenage girl who falls in love with a vampire and a werewolf. Pick up a real book, dullard.
four words, Paul Blart: Mall Cop
What they are missing is exactly what oozes from this movie. ROMANCE …which leads to a very crouchy person!! LOL!
No i don’t think it’s them. I think they have a right to their opinoin. In fact what they say is most likely true. After all they had gone to school to be what they are. haha, You are entitled to your own opinon too though. For now, Just pay attention and see if you see what they do.
i love listening to them, they help me decide if i want to watch a movie.
FOSHO!!! that’s what im talkin about!!!!! team edward baby!!! i got 12:30am tickets…their not midnight tickets…but close enough haha
Hmm,I’m trying to discern which of the two Twi-hard criteria you meet: 1. Horny Housefrau or 2. Undersexed tweenage girl. I’m guessing the former but I’ve been wrong before.
Ok, I’m a straight male…but I have to admit I liked the first film.
I’m a straight male and I have to admit….the 1st one was one of the suckiest suckfests I’ve ever had the displeasure of watching suck.
I don’t get the appeal. A chick once explained it to me thusly: it’s a girl’s fantasy about some stud wanting her, but also being afraid of hurting her, trying to restrain himself from wanting her, then wanting her even more because of it…or some bullshit.
Whatever, chicks. Enjoy it. God knows we like a lot of total crap.
I’m a straight female and I find these movies beyond dull! I fast forwarded through most of the first one, especially the sappy-over-acted “love scenes.” Get real, teenyboppers. I agree with the dude who said “pick up a real book.”
What is the appeal of Edward? I shudder when I think of the actor who can’t act to save his soul… but that’s OK because Kristen Stewart, the worst leading actress in film history, can’t act either. And she’s playing Joan Jett?! I think I just puked a little in my mouth.
The only semi-good parts of these movies are the action parts. Of course I’m a chick who digs action movies, spy novels and sports instead of wasting time watching some boring romantic comedy or this piece of crud.
Bottom line: let the teenyboppers have it. They’ll grow out of it – like us chickies from the 90′s grew out of our NKOTB and Titanic phases.
“straight female” are you sure about that.
Ouch!
What are you on about KeenSense? There are no “love scenes” in the first (or even the second) part. There are also not that many “action scenes” – unless with “action”, you mean running around in Vatican City or jumping up and down trees.
I’ll bet my Eclipse ticket that you haven’t seen either of the films. Let me guess: a failed Malibu writer?
madame, have you seen The Runaways? Before you single out Kristen Stewart as the worst actress in film history, i suggest you watch that first (mind you she was praised by the critics) and Into the Wild. Her part there was small but her performance made an impact.
They willr ealize that this was shiet and throw out all their twilight DVDS. haha. As they get older and experience more movies only then they will figure out that it was a totaly waste of their money
Best comment so far. I don’t totally agree (with the first part), but your honesty is refreshing. Funny.
Then you, sir, are a straight male with very poor movie taste.
just the fact that you watched the first movie shows that you can’t be “a straight male”
So the logic is… its “gay” to go see a movie that a woman likes, even if its in order to please said woman.
Look I try to avoid the chick flicks as much as possible, but there is a very good reason why a straight man would want to go to a movie like that: to make his gf happy, which leads to other things which straight men by definition like.
now, I am a lucky guy. my wife drags me to stuff like Fantastic Four 2. most of my guy friends are like, “man, I wish i was only dragged to movies like that.” FF2 wasn’t very good, but the twilight stuff… yike.
btw, i didn’t know that the werewolf guy was on stage when kenye west took the mic from his girlfriend Taylor Swift. what a complete punk. If Kenye did that to my wife, he wouldn’t rap for a month because he would have a broken jaw.
hahaha, Kanye would still put out music. He performed “Through the Wire” on his album with his mouth wired shut because he broke his jaw in a car crash.
While the girls and gays went see this movie I stayed home and watched Apocalypse Now…a truely ‘dark’ movie that appeals to men.
Yeah, way to prove your heterosexuality by watching a 25 year old war movie.
“Mom, I swear I ain’t gay! See, I like old war movies!”
You can be a straight dude and still watch a movie that girls like too. You just can’t be a d-bag and allow yourself to enjoy something other than that which is marketed as “For macho manly straight men!”
I don’t like twilight, but I like morons who try to prove how straight they are by the movies they do and don’t watch less.
just bcuz dude watched a “chick flick” does not make him “gay” it makes him a secure MAN. Which obviously you are NOT!
NO, it makes him gay and secure in his gayness
Your right, all your gay friends are standing in line with the rest of us at the movie, because they are sure of themselves, gay or not. While you sit home alone in the CLOSET. News flash, you can come out of it, this is 2010.
Spot on!
Whenever you see a “straight” guy worrying over a film or whatever being “too gay”, it only means that he’s very insecure about himself.
To the idiots here: watching Twilight won’t make your balls drop. It might negatively affect your brain, but rest assured, your balls will stay intact.
@Jess …haha, did you just say a man who watches Twilight is not gay but “secure”, but previously insult a woman for not liking Twilight saying she can’t be straight? Pretty hypocritical.
No secure man in his right mind would willingly be led into this banal drivel. I demanded my girlfriend come with me to Predators, The Expendables, A-Team, Salt and Inception before I’d consider seeing this excrutiatingly mindless pap. And I manage a 6-plex fully digital cinema and we played this thing to a full house of suckers and syncophants last night at midnight. Nice box office but OMG, how desperately simpleminded are these people anyway???
I take great offense to that sir! I’m a gay male and I haven’t seen ANY of these films nor do I WANT to. I personally find them ew-riffic but if people want to like crap then more power to them. After all, I liked Xanadu. Now THAT’S a gay film.
Century city was mobbed with lines and lines of peeps. No one in costume tho; 630pm tues.
All three movies were playing in a series starting at 6:30pm tues nite century city u missed it!!!!!
The critics aren’t wrong. The fans are just blindingly stupid.
Oh, and if you’re a straight male, and you liked Twilight-anything, you officially have to turn in your Man Card. That’s right – you can’t be a man and like Twilight. The two are like anti-particles – they annihilate each other when they come into contact.
Only real men can admit they like twilight.
Men that are insecure about their sexuality are afraid to tell people they like twilight.
But there are guys that likes twilight.
It’s not that men are insecure, it is the fact that Twilight is not a movie geared toward us. Quite the opposite, actually. Not to mention the main girl is so wishy-washy about who or what the hell she wants… It grates on our primal nerves to see woman inaction due to “not deciding who to love more” or some crap.
Uh, you clearly don’t know real men – this is a movie based on literature geared toward pleasing teenage hormonal misfits. A male who identifies with Twilight to the extent they enjoy it is tacitly admitting to being responsive to the stimulus of immature girls. There is nothing in this that is satisfying to mature men, no straight male is going to enjoy a film with shirtless young men who are shirtless simply to titillate shrieking vapid females.
You know no real men. Remedy the situation. It’s okay that real men don’t like Twilight. It’s BY DESIGN. It is designed for women. It’s okay to admit men and women don’t like the same thing. Stop looking for validation for Twilight via male approval. It’s not there. We don’t like Twilight. We don’t like The Notebook. We don’t like Maid in Manhattan. Those are not aimed at men. Men who like those films have the proclivities of a woman. Just telling it to you straight.
What he said. Well put.
Dude, get over yourself, real men don’t worry about what society says they should be, to include insecure little men who bash others on websites for not fitting their “norm.” I personally don’t understand the appeal of Twilight, although I’ve let my wife drag me to them multiple times, but I loved the Notebook and have voluntarily seen it several times.
I’m a combat vet. I drive a truck AND a minivan. I carry a teddy bear with me every time I travel, to include in combat, because my little daughter asked me to so she could feel close to me when I’m gone. I don’t care what you say to/about me for watching chick flicks with me wife (without even protesting), but I’ll absolutely break you in two for insulting my wife in front of me.
Bottom line, you don’t know what a real man is because we don’t fit into your insecure little mold and we aren’t defined by society, esp today’s society. Real men are just that, REAL.
I have to take issue at a few things: I reckon I’m a real man, or striving toward that goal. And it does matter what society thinks. Especially a society that values certain attributes. To the extent that our society stops valuing these attributes is the extent to which we should ignore society.
Thanks for your service as a vet. And I take you at your word when you say you’ll break me or anyone else in two for insulting your wife, which we as men should do. But I don’t think MEC2 said anything insulting about anyone. He just laid out the case that men and women are fantastically different.
If your response was to some other comment, let me know, I might be up in the night.
Thanks for indulging the digression. We now return to our regularly scheduled Twilight thread.
Stop arguing about what constitutes a REAL MAN, Jesus Christ. A real person with a penis is a man. Men are all real.
You guys are all REAL FUCKING MEN, unless you don’t have a penis. Everything you are doing, whatever you like or don’t like still makes you a REAL MAN. Shut up about movies.
IF YOU TRULY HATE A MOVIE… You will stop talking and caring about it and completely IGNORE. Just pretend it doesn’t it exist.
Now if you disagree, it means you care somewhat about the movie. Don’t matter whether you like it or not, you make it EXIST more and do you really want that?
MAKE TWILIGHT NOT EXIST, BUT NOT CARING ABOUT IT. THERE.
You’re a combat vet, you drive a truck and a minivan, etc. – ok then.
But, you watch chick flicks? What the hell is wrong with you?
Let me guess: you’re from and/or you continue to live in a fly-over state.
Men that are secure in their homosexuality admit to liking Twilight: the remaining men just don’t like the movie.
Does this also applies to to the male population that liked all the gore and the film is being shunned by critics? can we call them stupid too? Even if that gore of a movie doesnt made sense?
kudos.
I think people disagree and hate with the critics cause the critics don’t usually agree with thier opinoins so it makes them mad when their favorite twilight movie got bad reviews and they start bagging on them. If only they saw every piece of how those movies are a complete pile of poo
Seriously? I mean…SERIOUSLY?! Lol. Well, I give my heart-felt congrats to the creative team behind these movies. Personally, I’ve found Twilight to be lacking but obviously, you all have struck a chord with the audience and deserve the success. I wish some of the other studios in town would start making movies I could get as excited about as these folks are. I mean, I really, really wanna see “Inception”. And yeah, I’m pretty excited about it. But this Twi-Hard fandom thing is epic. The only way I can relate is to remember how much I was anticipating “The Phantom Menace”. That’s the only time I slept in a parking lot to get tix to a movie….for straight dudes, that was pretty epic. But then…well…within the first 5 minutes of the movie, you could tell it wasn’t worth sleeping in a parking lot for….
INCPETION! HOLY SHIET.! DUDE. HIGH FIVE WTF. IT SHOULD EARN ALL THIS MONEY INSTEAD OF THIS STUPID JUNK
Dear Lord!
I am female (late 30s) and couldn’t finish the first book when I got it as an advance copy many years ago. Before I’m murdered I’ll just say that not every book is for everyone. I haven’t seen any of the movies and must even admit that I didn’t realize that this was the third one until one of my staff today told me (sue me, I thought it was the second). She’s 40 and switched shifts with a coworker so she doesn’t have to work early tomorrow morning so she could see the midnight show tonight – and then she’s already planning to go again tomorrow night after her shift.
I’m sure I’m missing something, but that’s ok. Nothing against teen angst and sparkly vampires – it’s just not my kind of flick any more. I’m sure it’ll blow everyone away and prove me wrong all the way to the bank though.
“I’m sure it’ll blow everyone away and prove me wrong all the way to the bank though.”
How would that prove you wrong?
Hey lady,
I don’t know what you’re taking, but you’re not “blowing anyone away” or make anyone “prove you wrong all the way” with your silly little comment. Drop that attitude because it’s fucking annoying. And stop calling for a Lord for no goddamn reason.
This IMAX theater mutiplex is insane. You could have sworn
It was the Electric Daisy Carnival. People are coming out in droves!!
The lines are beyond crazy. Eclipse is going to be huuuuuge!
There are allot of guys in the demographics tonight. Everyone seems
Excited to see a Epic Summer BLOCKBUSTER That’s gonna deliver!
I predict a history making opening weekend!
I dont think that it will pass the dark knight but it will pass the spiderman 2 record. Chill out twi-hards. It will drop dramatically by next week. The critics tore it apart and itll still make a fortune. Brings the question..Do critics even matter anymore? To be completely honest, I like the series although id never admit it in public.
actually the critics doesnt even matter? Perfect example is transformers 2. Its fan boy movie, special effects at its best, robots, megan fox and more. The critics tore it a apart. If I am not mistaken, it has a 19% rating in RT.But did it stop making millions? Nope it didnt. it had a record opening day and it went to 900 million i believe in world wide sales.
On the other hand, there was the Hurt Locker. It was a critics darling and a Oscar winning film. But did it earn like transformers did or even crack the 100 million opening or even 50 million? I dont think so. It barely recovered the money spent on production and making it. So that proves, critics doesnt matter. As long as that movie has lot of fans, it will make money.
I don’t think critics do matter anymore. Most of the time their opinion is opposite of MOST not ALL of the people who see whatever it is.
I was very anti-Twi-craze for a very long time. I’m not a chick who is usually into such sappy, silly, stuff. Then one day, curiosity got the best of me and I watched the first flick on DVD. And I was surprised, because it wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Aside from a few cheesy moments and some silly acting, I got it. I got why tween girls love it. When I got it, I was then able to appreciate it in some weird way. And so I watched the 2nd film, and it impressed me more than the first. And now, the third looks even more promising since it will have actual action and not just angsty looks between three teenagers, lol.
Whatever success this film sees, I’ll say congrats. They did awesome casting, knew their audience, and have put out what makes that demo happy and made a lot of money as a result. I can’t knock them for that, and having seen the films, have to admit that in some weird way, they’re mildly enjoyable.
No, it’s just something new. It’s the story. I couldn’t read the book. It wasn’t what i liked. I didn’t see why people liked it soo much. I say it’s mostly consisted of followers though.
Just think, Paramount – IT COULD HAVE BEEN YOURS – BUT YOUR PEOPLE TURNED IT DOWN! (you gotta love this business!)
uhh.. paramount doesn’t need it…. did you read the article from the day before or do you only read the Twi-hardicles? Paramount has 4 years of being the first studio to cross the 1 Billion dollar mark.
Nikki, I love you! I love that you slip in a crack at entertainment weekly who always re-broadcast what you write. and, i just read the terms for your comments, dont bore me! your funny, kinda! you really play that no b.s. game well! i’m a HUGE fan. don’t ever change! don’t sell out! death to joe carnahan! Viva deadline:hollywood!
Look at it from the bright side. It will have big opening week, people will talk… And from the next week they will stop promotion, no more talk-show appearances, Pattinson’s and Stewart’s fake PR romance will be put in the closet till the next year and a half when the next movie will be released. When do they plan to release it?
Maybe there will be promotion for 2 weeks for other countries. When it opens there? And then Pattinson will go hide again from his crazy fans. Like he did after New Moon release. He wasn’t seen for a couple of months. And Stewart will return for shooting of her Indi movies that no one cares about.… Finally it will be over.
And the next time we will hear about it will be at the Golden Raspberry where it probably will be nominated in all the major categories
Someone sounds bitter. I guess Wyck confirming what everyone knew made you unhappy. If Kristen and Rob are running a PR romance, then their people are doing the worst job ever. They go through great pains not to be photographed together outside of work, but they spend a lot of off time together. I’m sure Kristen Stewart will be fine. She can pick and choose her indies or big budgets as she please. You jealous women make me laugh.
Back to the story. Yes, this movie is going to be huge. Hate it or love it, Summit was smart to buy this. I’ve read the books and it’s not the greatest writing, but it has something that draws you in. The movie did the same for me. I didn’t like the first Twilight when I first saw it, but I had to watch it again, and then I liked it. I know so many other women who tell me that. It is like a fairytale romance with the added measure of the supernatural. I saw more men at the theater last night than ever for a Twilight movie, so I guess Summit’s approach of adding David Slade and action worked.
“Snobby Ass Critics”?
No, sorry. it’s the rest of normal, sane humanity who look at the utter morons who lap up this dreadful franchise. In 20 years time, the “Twilight Saga” (please…a “Saga” has something going for it) will be the most popular, utterly forgotten franchise in the history of cinema.
This is a blip of hysteria. Like Princess Diana’s death. Nothing more.
thank you dude. We needed that;O i am glad you said it . finally .
Bought tickets last week because theater chain Rave Motion Pictures had it advertised for well over a month. Thought buying a ticket in advance was enough, clearly not. Showed up
an hour early and the line ended in the parking lot (multiple lines mind you), and the 2:45am showing was sold out. I couldn’t bother with the line so I exchanged my ticket for a matinee Thursday morning. Needless to say, last year, I was still able to purchase a ticket the day of without worrying.
Eclipse is going to blow New Moon out of
the water easy, no question. Summit is riding on easy street.
It’s nice that women and young girls, etc. have something to be excited about. It can’t all be fan boys (not that they did much for Kick-Ass…or The Losers…).
@LA
Alright. I caught the “Eclipse” midnight show tonight, and no, I didn’t like it. Certainly far from the worst film of the year, but it was almost abysmally average. But say I’m one of these mean ol’ critics trying to kill your buzz. Now here’s my question: what is it about this series that gets you and millions of others jazzed up with every installment? Is it the stilted romance? The wooden dialogue? The forced conflict? I’m serious — where’s the appeal?
You have to read the series to get it. But since I know you dont like to do that, put it this way: What is it that makes fanboys go crazy for their fandom? I know you must have been crazy or a fan of star wars and star trek, and not all of human kind gets the appeal. Put yourself in that fan boys/girls shoes with all those people who dont get it around you and asking the same questions that you have raised. Am sure you are going to answer your questions.
For one, yeah, I’ve enjoyed “Star Trek”/”Wars,” but never on a level as “Twilight” fans are displaying for their chosen series; I’ve only seen two “Trek” flicks in the theater and not a single episode of any of the TV shows.
I’m just as removed from the uber-fandom of those as I am with “Twilight,” but for those, I at least get the appeal: they have whole worlds and mythologies that people respond to. But I see absolutely nothing about “Eclipse” that would inspire the jam-packed midnight show I went to; it seemed to exist because the fanbase did and was definitely the most self-aware of the movies yet. The audience walked away happy, so I guess they got what they wanted, but whatever that was beats the hell outta me.
I read it . didn’t understand. it . Jesus. it like his point though. it’s pretty true. once you think of it.
Thank you for an honest question. It is the same thing that got me to watch the Harry Potter movies after reading that series, or the Chronicles of Narnia movies after reading that series (well, years later).
I am fascinated to compare the scenes, stories, sub-stories, etc. that I visually constructed in my mind while reading, with the scenes now in the movie. I am interested in somebody else’s adaptation of the storyline-and thus, their interpretation.
The books can be read on a silly hormonal teenage level, or on a much deeper level wrestling with some very deep issues-fatalism vs. freewill, what makes a sentient being a human being (hence, what makes us human besides biology), are we truly created to be something-or is it just all random chance (similar, but different than the fatalism theme). These are all questions and themes that run through the books-really starting to take off in the second book.
I am fascinated to see how the adaptations spin those themes, what they think is important enough to keep in, and what they try to write out of the movie.
Just wanted to point out (lol) twilight vampires don’t have fangs.
Not only that, but they can be seen in the sunlight… instead of melting like MOST vamps, their skin shimmers like diamonds.
LMFAO. Right.
And you know what else?!?! Vampires are myths.. they’re fictional characters, and because of this, their existance in books and movies are entirely up for interpretation. This was Stephenie Meyers vision, written on paper. There is not a rule, code, or law that states that vampires have to have fangs and fry in the sunlight. So…. go learn something.
Been a bad Summer for movies.
This one will be bigger than normal because others have sucked this year…a-team, prince of persia, robin hood, knight and day.
It kills me because Summit has no incentive to make these films GOOD. The fans prove to them that they will eat up anything that’s dished out so long as they get a movie on the big screen – no matter how mangled the script is.
the numbers outside of america will be soft. and sweden, denmark nad norway are tiny countries with populations under 10M. i think norway has like 4M people. summit should’ve released this overseas after july 12 as they are doing in some markets. but wh/it’s good or suckie, it’ll be undeniably huge huge huge in the u.s.
This is blasphemy against all that I hold dear in this life.
The Count from Sesame Street is more interesting to me than these pitiful beings. But maybe that’s because I’m an actual male and don’t understand the sex appeal of metrosexual sparkling “vampires” or queerious werewolves.
Also, I have yet to see Kristen Stewart with her mouth closed. Am I expecting too much of her acting abilities, or is she seriously as mind-blowingly stupid as she looks?
