EXCLUSIVE: Fox 2000 has optioned the rights to the Lauren Oliver teen novel Before I Fall, with Maria Maggenti set to adapt it. The book brings a Groundhog Day approach to high school. A female student finds herself living what may be her last day on earth over and over, until she gets things right. Jon Shestack will produce and Ginny Pennekamp will co-produce. Maggenti most recently did a rewrite on Monte Carlo, the Fox 2000 co-production with Regency and Walden Media that has Tom Bezucha directing and Selena Gomez starring. APA-repped Maggenti was a staff writer on 90210 and wrote and directed Puccini for Beginners. Book deal was brokered by Kohner Agency and Foundry and Carla Hacken's steering the project for Fox 2000.

Awful book with a very familiar storyline. Has been making the rounds at Prod co’s for many months now and no one wanted it.
It’s a gorgeous novel. You might want to read the book, rather than the coverage.
I really enjoyed this book and I wish to watch the movie.I could not stop reading it.Great idea¡¡¡
Ever since I read this book (twice in one week, mind you), I’ve been thinking about how it absolutely needs to be made into a book. Lauren Oliver’s novel is the best piece of Young Adult fiction I’ve read in a long time. The dialogue of typical popular high school girls is often far from real in teen novels, but Oliver’s version is 100% realistic. I suggest this book to anyone who enjoys Young Adult fiction, and so far nobody has been able to put it down once they’ve begun reading it. Congratulations, Lauren!
Made into a movie*
Sorry, I was multitasking, which isn’t one of my strong suits.
I won’t disagree, but hey Shestack got 2000 to buy it, so kudos to him and company.
Groundhog Day was the most painfully dull movie ever, this one sounds about the same. Blech.
Troll.
Actually, saying that it’s an awful book is one thing (I don’t know what’s your age but the target of this novel is teenagers) but ignoring the fact that it got terrific reviews from YA books’ bloggers is an other. I’m not trying to explain to you how to do your job but you can’t ignore what the public wants or what will have a chance to work with a specific target. Apparently, Fox 2000 knows better.
Peter, have you actually read the book? Just wondering, because AWFUL is the last thing I would ever call this novel.
This is actually a really amazing book. Any book that has you hating the protagonist in the beginning and rooting for her in the end is extremely well written. One of my top books.
It’s an amazing book. What’s familiar about the storyline?
I think teens will relate to the characters on screen and adults will love the introspective themes.
So much more than Groundhog Day – one of the best YA books of 2010. Printz nominee? I think so.
It might’ve been a lousy book, but it’s a great idea for a movie.
Great book and it will make a great movie! Congrats Lauren – well deserved success!
This is a fantastic book and will make a great movie!
Read the entire book. Anyone who calls that ‘gorgeous’ needs to go back to lit school. I stand by AWFUL.
I’m thrilled! Such an awesome book and definitely great for a movie! Hollywood, DO NOT ruin it!
Read it and it’s been done. MEAN GIRLS. This one is even less inspired.
after i finished the book, i KNEW it had a huge potential to become a beyond- this world- movie, even a best selling one, and when lauren put this post up, i was ecstatic. congrats!!!!!!!
read it twice. unusually strong material, i thought, for this genre. a lot of promise. entertaining, yet with a solid and compelling message/character aspects. i wish the team on this one lots of success…
