I hear Fox’s action drama Human Target is adding a female lead for Season 2 and has cast British actress Indira Varma for it. The series, based on the DC Comic about unorthodox bodyguard Christopher Chance (Mark Valley), stood out in its first season with an all-male regular cast of 3, Valley, Chi McBride and Jackie Earle Haley, probably the smallest core cast I’ve seen on a drama series in a long time. Now the show is adding a fourth regular, Varma. She will play Ilsa, a sophisticated, sexy, driven and witty widow, a female Christopher Chance who doesn’t take any nonsense from anyone. Soon, she will be in charge of the team of security experts. Varma, who has a long list of series credits in the U.K., co-starred on HBO/BBC’s Rome and CBS’ short-lived medical drama 3 Lbs. She also played the lead in Shonda Rhimes’ 2009 drama pilot for ABC Inside the Box.

nice. looks like Chance will have met his match and have a challenge worthy of his skills when the show comes back. the worse Indra character becomes such a hit that human target gets a third season.
No fox show has any chance of surviving on fridays
Unless they are pulling a “Torchwood” on us. Not that it would be a bad thing necessarily.
Yes, yes, yes, and she was Suzie on “Torchwood”…
Saw her in “Kama Sutra” – gorgeous woman.
Didn’t need a female lead. The show operates fine with three male leads who already have huge chemistry. I guess this is part of HT’s formula being tweaked with the addition of the Chuck showrunner as a co-EP for S2…
It’s Niobe from “Rome!”
Will be interesting to see how this affects the team dynamic. Loved it as it was first season; hope this doesn’t screw it up!
I’ve been wondering what Indira Varma has been up to, especially since her other Inside the Box co-stars have found their ways on other shows. Good for her.
When is the Actors guild be it Sag or Aftra going to step up and put a stop to American shows hiring actors from other countries and taking the jobs of american actors. It’s bad enough that only 99% of all actors work in the first place. Do you think England would ever hire an American actor over a Brit. Never. Not to mention all the Australians that are working in American Television and film. It used to be the occasional hire now it’s the norm. Any suggestions?
“Actors from other countries” get hired because of their TALENT your protectionist moron! SAG and AFTRA aren’t protectionist, in fact many “foreigners” are dues paying members of both guilds.
Australian actors (Sam Worthington etc) are being cast as leads because there are the “real/masculine” actors in this generation. American “leading men” of this generation all “emo boys” (aka Team Twilight) or “gangsta wanna be’s” (that’s not a racial profile either, swaggering egomaniacs come in all racial colors). Matt Damon is probably the last American actor with the range to play anything from “action hero” to “everyday guy” to “comedic lead”…before him, who were the last generation of real leading men?….you probably have to go back to Bruce Willis, (EVIL) Mel Gibson and all those guys who came up through the 80′s. The raft of English and Aussie actress, led by Keira Knightly but now encompassing most of the top 20 up and coming actresses (Angelina Jolie aside) are their because of one thing: their ACTING TALENT blows away any breast enhanced dingbat wanna be from the Valley or the “fresh off the bus” naive beauty queen from the midwest.
Shows don’t hire based on your passport…England, Australia et al are just turning out a better class of actors/actresses…have been for some time.
Your “tea party, America first” idiotic rantings will not change that…
“Rage, rage, rage against the dying of the light”…America, like Rome before it, is an empire in inevitable decline and only it’s most clueless subjects can’t see this fact….
Jesus Christ! One big reason this show is decidedly and refreshingly old school is BECAUSE it has such a small and wonderful cast!
Why the hell does “fixing” something so often have to involve “making it look more like other shows”?
So here we go, kids…it has begun… we will be seeing fewer self-contained episodes and more serialization… more angst and dourness and pretentious “solemnity”… and less sheer fun.
Shit.
I have a feeling this will be Human Target’s last season. The move to Fridays wasn’t a vote of confidence by Fox.
Another douchebag move by Fox is moving the show opposite Smallville on the CW. Two shows based on DC properties airing against each other? That doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

I really enjoyed Human Target last season.
When I saw that Fox was moving HT to Friday I saw that as a vote of no confidence. Now, adding a female lead into a show that was refreshing because it had no female lead is the second vote of no confidence – that the chemistry of the cast was insufficient to the task and the sexual tension between Chance and his female guest stars was not enough. Well, I planned on tivo’ing HT and The Good Guys once they moved to Friday anyway. That’s the third vote of no confidence – mine.
Here it comes, the beginning of the end. What makes Human Target special and interesting is the dynamics between the the three guys, their past relationship. The women only need to come and go as guest stars. I like Chi McBride in charge and it needs to stay that way. What qualifies this woman to take over?? And I HATED her on Bones. Her character on Bones talked so fast and mumbled all of her lines and her accent wasn’t charming, just distracting. She isn’t going to magically save the show but a decent time slot might help.
