Everyone has been wondering where the next big reality format idea would come from. Funny or Die video is throwing its hat into the ring, generating a lot of buzz in the unscripted marketplace with a viral video starring singer Jewel.
Titled Undercover Karaoke with Jewel, it was posted on the comedy site on Wednesday and generated 2.5 million views in its first 3 days. It features Jewel disguised as a mousy-looking, mild-mannered businesswoman who has a Susan Boyle moment when she performs some of her signature songs to a dumbfounded audience at a local karaoke bar. I hear the Funny or Die team, including the video’s creator Eric Appel, are out there with a concept for a reality show based on the hit video, which would feature music stars from the past 4 decades going undercover to places where comedic situations will ensue, showcasing their talent. There has been a lot of interest in the idea and I hear it is being pitched to a number of networks this week. But I hear that the video has also spurred a slew of other pitches, with the networks getting a lot of calls in the past few days from producers shopping similar ideas. CBS has had success in the past year with reality projects about well-known people going undercover: its hit freshman series Undercover Boss and series of specials I Get That A Lot.

Pretty ‘bleh,’ imo. It’s kinda entertaining, but nothing to get excited over.
Not “funny” at all, though… so I don’t know why FoD is involved. I usually like their originals – mostly because they’re humorous. The only thing about this that was actually funny was the old dude running away at the very end.
Karen! Karen! Karen! A show like that would be a lot of fun.
I really like the idea! If they keep the shooting style, premise, and get some interesting musicians this could become a real hit…Don’t Hollywood-ize it too much or then I’ll just get pissed…
Go ERIC!
Brilliant! And what fun, and filled with positive stuff, not the usual addict-crash-n-burn reality drama. I’d watch “Undercover Karaoke” on TV. And yes, the Gas Lite was the perfect spot to run the karaoke surprise. Cheers to all.
This is great. I’d love to see more, but I wonder how they would sustain a whole season of it without it getting repetitive and feeling unnatural (see: Punk’d).
Good luck to them — it’s as good as anything else that’s transitioned from web to TV.
Definitely be a bigger hit than I Get That A Lot
Yeah, was wondering how long it would be before a musical “I Get That A Lot” was greenlit. Seems inevitable.
I think they’re all thinking: “Why does this chick keep singing these crappy Jewel songs?”
I’d hate to be the person who sings AFTER Jewel!
I don’t enjoy reality tv but I’d probably watch this one. What a great idea! Somebody needs to make this happen.
Lamely produced reveal. Funny or Die is so mediocre.
New Wave Entertainment had this same concept in development for TNT (I think) 4 years ago under the title “Fake the Funk” with Billy Idol
It was OK, Jewel is hot. Think the premise could get old real quick though and people would catch on. The disguise – typical: just make yourself fat with a big nose and you are ugly.
Eric Appel is the real deal. Guy comes up with the best material every day, and always brings a unique take that makes it stand out.
Lame
I would love to see the show track down a few women who look like “Karen” and see how they react. As long as you’re going to define “ugly girl,” why not rub some women’s faces in it? THAT would make a great reality show!
This ‘kinda’ works for 3 minutes. How does this become a 30 or even hour long show is beyond me…
The video on FOD is almost 7 minutes and it pretty much works the whole way. Doesn’t seem that crazy to stretch it out another 14 minutes. I’m sure they could have dove in much deeper with her preparation for the prank and showed more of the singing. I’d watch the show!
How does it become a 30 minute show? Let’s see, people watch all kinds of “feel good” unscripted TV with less of a hook than this project would have. I’d bet on these guys because that video is incredible and stars like being involved with FOD.
They’ll spend millions to make and promote it, then if they’re lucky they’ll reach episode number eight.
The major Networks are the Classic Rock of the TV industry.
Won’t work now that everyone will be expecting the tactic.
Jewel? Let me guess, you’ll get Debby Gibson, Tiffany, Barry Williams, etc,. Basically the same “celebs” who were desperate enough to do “The Surreal Life.” Poor, pitiful, has-beens.
This would work better (especially in a longer format) if it was expanded to bands. Get a fairly well known, already touring band to play a local cover show of their own music or an impromptu opening set for a like-minded current band. There are plenty of opportunities all over the country…
I can think of almost nothing less original or less interesting than watching more than one singer pull this prank.
It was innovative when Punk’d came out 10 years ago. It was MODERATELY amusing when they had Jewel do it.
Now it feels like a lame bit that Jay Leno will steal for the TONIGHT SHOW.
I trust that the buyers in town will agree.
funnyordie is a great site but this jewel clip is a missed opportunity….there is SO much more that can be done with the concept, in the right hands it can really, really work…..the Irish have been doing it for years now with an hilarious show called Anonymous…..check it out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-lEdtdtaVc&feature=related
It’s great! Although, the idea has been around for some time now in various incarnations. Of course, an exec will go “oh, it was on Funny or Die? yeah, we always liked this idea…”
Glad to see someone can get it pushed through – people will watch it! Another victory for the web.
its fake. There are two of Jewels friends pretending to be real interviews at the end. This has been done a million times before it never has the punch that it does in the ‘pitch’. Mostly because the real singers are just good and even they can’t match their own records. Jewel can really sing but they had to stack the deck because the real crowd reactions were average.
It’s been pitched and developed and pitched again and again. Nothing new here.
