DirecTV has become the patron saint of lost TV causes, saving yet another high-quality series from untimely death. Following its deal with NBC Universal for Friday Night Lights, DirecTV has inked a pact with Sony Pictures TV for the Emmy nominated Damages taking over the ratings-challenged legal drama with an order for 20 new episodes to run over two consecutive seasons, the show’s fourth and fifth, in 2011 and 2012. But unlike the deal for FNL, in which the original network, NBC, got a second window on the series, Damages‘ new episodes will only air on DirecTV. DirecTV has also acquired the rights to Damages‘ first 3 seasons, which ran on FX. Here is the official release on the deal, which had been in the works for the past several months with Sony as the driving force:
CULVER CITY AND EL SEGUNDO, CALIF., July 19, 2010 – DIRECTV and Sony Pictures Television will team up to bring the award-winning DAMAGES, starring Glenn Close and Rose Byrne, back with brand new episodes to be produced early next year and debuting exclusively on DIRECTV. Emmy winner Glenn Close, Emmy nominee Rose Byrne and other principal cast members will return for the new episodes.
Unlike DIRECTV’s current deal for Friday Night Lights, whereby the show airs first on DIRECTV and then on NBC, the new episodes of DAMAGES will air only on DIRECTV. Additionally, DIRECTV will have the rights to air previously produced seasons 1through 3.
“We’re excited to partner with Sony Pictures Television as we breathe new life into this outstanding drama,” said Patty Ishimoto, general manager of The 101 Network and vice president of entertainment for DIRECTV. “It’s a win for our customers because only they will be able to see these new episodes and another great step forward for DIRECTV as we continue to build our growing portfolio of exclusive, award winning programming.”
“DAMAGES is simply one of the best shows on television, and we’re grateful to DIRECTV for the opportunity to produce more episodes of this groundbreaking show,” said Jamie Erlicht, president, programming and production, Sony Pictures Television. Added Zack Van Amburg, president, programming and production, Sony Pictures Television, ”We’re thrilled to have a new home for the show and our team of award-winning writers, producers and actors will not only maintain that standard of excellence, but deliver our best seasons yet,”
“FX was very proud to have developed one of the best scripted series on television, but, in order to have a future, the show needed DIRECTV and we are thrilled they stepped in,” said John Landgraf, President & General Manager, FX Networks, who also heads FX Productions. “Sony Pictures Television is a great production partner and we at FX Productions are excited for these next two seasons.”
Over its first three seasons on television, DAMAGES has featured what is arguably the most impressive cast and guest stars of any series on television – Glenn Close, Rose Byrne, Tate Donovan, Ted Danson, Željko Ivanek, Anastasia Griffith, Noah Bean, Tom Aldrege, Philip Bosco, Nichael Nouri, Peter Facinelli, Peter Reigert, Mario Van Peebles, Marcia Gay Harden, William Hurt, Timothy Olyphant, John Doman, Clarke Peters, Kevin Corrigan, Paige Turco, Tom Noonan, Garret Dillahunt, Campbell Scott, Martin Short, Lily Tomlin, Keith Carradine, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Michael Gaston, Darren Goldstein, Sarah Wynter and Reiko Aylesworth.
DAMAGES recently received five Emmy Award nominations for its critically acclaimed third season, Glenn Close for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, Rose Byrne for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, Željko Ivanek for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, Ted Danson for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series and Lily Tomlin for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series.
The series earned seven Emmy Award nominations in each of its first two seasons and Close became the first actress from a basic cable series to win the Emmy for Lead Actress in a Drama; Željko Ivanek became the first actor from a basic cable series to win the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor for a Drama Series, and DAMAGES was the first basic cable series to take home the Emmy for Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series. DAMAGES and AMC’s Mad Men were the first basic cable series to be nominated in for Outstanding Drama Series. In its first season, DAMAGES earned the most Golden Globes nominations of any series in television with Glenn Close winning for Best Actress in a TV Series – Drama.
The show was created and is executive produced by Todd A. Kessler, Glenn Kessler and Daniel Zelman. DAMAGES is produced by Sony Pictures Television in association with FX Productions.

I hope this change will help this show return to its first season form, when it was some of the best writing on television.
I’m glad I have DirecTV because I’ll be looking out for the new episodes.
Unbelievable! I have been wondering why there has not been any advertising on TV. This is the only show I look forward to watching and I do not have Direct TV – Nor will I get it .My friends and neighbors who have direct tv have moved on to other companies.
How will it be made available to the general public? The millions of Americans and others who do not have Direct TV.
This is very upsetting. I will be shocked if there is a larger viewing audience.
How do you watch it if you live in a Manhattan apt and can’t get DTV? Will they make at available for purchase through iTunes or Amazon?
This is the most amazing news!!!! I don’t have directtv, but I’ll find a way to watch em! Thank you, tv gods!!!
Damages is the best show on television, and I never missed an episode from the first three season. But, I don’t have and don’t plan on getting DirecTV, so I’m gonna be force to watch this illegally online, or wait for the dvd boxset. Its a real shame that some other broadcaster couldn’t find a timeslot to air the recast of the new seasons.
Seriously, “forced” to watch it illegally? What, you have a gun to your head? Has someone kidnapped your children until download all episodes?
Do what sane peope do: pay for it on iTunes or Hulu, or whereever.
Get over it, dude. I know plenty of working, well off industry professionals who download illegally.
Get off your high horse.
Well, If “industry professionals” don’t feel guilty about downloading illegally, then maybe I shouldn’t. Please advise a good site to start getting my free videos.
Oooh, exciting new moral standard: if many people do it, it is not wrong. Sah-weet.
“I know plenty of working, well off industry professionals who download illegally”
That makes them well-off professional criminals.
Seriously, dude? No one was being so dramatic to warrant ” put a gun to your head
” and force you to watch it illegally? Why do you have to be such a douche and make a comment like that, anyway?
And yes, that makes me a douche by calling you a douche…..whatevs.
For those of us that are big Damages fans, It is beyond disappointing to not get it on Dish or ANY other provider. And no, we won’t cancel to get Direct Tv as that’s not only a pain in the ass- but many of us have bundle packages and are in contracts.
And who wants to wait till on its on dvd?!
The ONLY option if we wanna watch it IS to download it illegally. Period.
Hulu is no longer allowed to share full length episoses due to…blah blah blah!
It sucks but whatever…that’s all the guy was saying.
People who have this kind of judgement anger on an insignificant chat page – certainly has that same judgement and intolerance out in the world………
Practice Peace
I would watch if Damages was available on Hulu, but I have a feeling that once its off FX it won’t be made available on Hulu. For me, I don’t download off of itunes because why should I pay $20 on downloads, and then another $30-$40 on the dvd complete season sets. I’m not a fan of double-dipping.
Plus, I have a feeling the quality of the show is gonna take a nose-dive. When the show was on basic cable, potential guest stars knew people would be watching. On DirecTV, stars and agents have no clue how many people will watch, and I’m sure the producers will be forced to only issue low-ball offers.
As I said earlier, It’s a shame no basic cable channel can find a spot on their schedules to reair the DirecTV produced episodes. FX’s Saturday is too crowded?, or one of the major 5 networks couldn’t throw this on a Saturday night for a limited run? Worse off is, PBS couldn’t find a Sunday night slot….and believe me, I think PBS would be perfect for this show.
I agree. I got hooked on this series and have been waiting for it to return. I too will not get direct-tv. I will wait for the box set too.
BEST. TV NEWS. EVER !!!
I am so happy to see this wonderful series return, however, really bummed that only Directv will carry it. Hopefully Itunes will have it available the next day.
Yahoo!!!
The press release unfortunatley has a wrong name on the five Emmy nominations for this year.
Zeljko Ivanek was nominated/won in 2008.
The five Emmy nods are Glenn, Close, Rose Byrne, Martin Short, Lily Tomlin and Ted Danson.
I blew through the first season on DVD. Talk about an addictive show. Don’t start watching this, unless you have a ten hour block of free time.
Clearly, DirecTV hopes to make money off of ancillary media, all on the backend. The DirecTV subscription base, and those who watch Damages as a subset of that subscription base, isn’t large enough to justify the investment for 20 episodes (at a very minimum of, say, $1MM/episode, if not significantly more)?
This is fantastic news. One of the greatest shows ever on TV with terrific story lines, casts and direction.
Wonder if Dish will get into original programming too. This is such a smart deal for DirecTV. Damages is one of the best written shows and they should pick up a sh*t load of new viewers which will probably pay back the entire investment. Way to go!
How is DirecTV going to pick up a sh*t load of new viewers when Damages didn’t have a sh*t load of viewers watching it on FX? If it did, it wouldn’t have been dropped by the network. Case closed!
I got Direct tv for one reason an that was to watch son of anarchy on fx an now I can’t do that an for that reason Direct tv sucks an im going to have it taken out of my house
YES!!! Best show on TV gets an opportunity to live on. I would subscribe to DirectTV just for this show.
Hallelujah!! Although Season 3 had a hard time finding the cohesion of the first two, this remains one of the best shows on TV. So, so glad it will be saved (against all odds), and for a whole 20 episodes no less!
I don’t get it DTV.. are you encouraging Internet Piracy? On the flip side, I’m excited for 20 more episodes of one of the best shows on TV. Let’s see if they can keep up the crazy.
THE DUMBEST THING I EVER HEARD OF….they can’t get an audience now and no second run network to run it on….i get it….the DVD’S AND ALL….but have a good time at the EMMY’S THIS YEAR GLENN because you won’t be back in the coming years for this….and by the way….I LOVE THE SHOW….IT’S JUST A STUPID DECISION……
GREATEST! THANK U DTV!
Amazing news! Just made my night! Thanks Nellie. Upset though that it only plays on DirectTV since I do not have it and do not plan on getting it, but hopefully it will go on Amazon or iTunes to buy it instead of having to wait for an entire season to get the boxset. And a whole 20 episode order!!!!
This is just one of those things that makes me embarrassed for my country. The fact that one of the best legal dramas in the entire history of television is barely hanging on, while shows like NCIS and Burn Notice are mega-hits.
I don’t have DTV either and don’t want to be forced to switch out my cable..so downloading or waiting for the DVDs is the only option..I’m glad it’s going to get another couple of season but extremely disappointed FX couldn’t find a place for this Emmy winning show on their schedule, while they managed to air Nip/Tuck many seasons past it’s sale date ..
And Its Always Sunny In Philly is in what–season six? seven? ridiculous priorities, FX.
This still is called show BUSINESS. Nip/Tuck (as awful creatively as it sunk to) still managed to attract about 3 million viewers a week in its last season. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia still gets around 2.5 million viewers. Damages sunk to under 700,000 viewers a week at points in season 3 and crept back up to 900,000 for the finale and a 0.2 in the 18-49 demo. For the cost of this show, those are abysmal ratings. I don’t blame FX at all for their decision.
Couldn’t be happier!!! congrats to everyone involved for making this happen. I f–ing LOVE this show!
Wow that was a surprise. Didn’t see one let alone two seasons.
Hopefully Showcase in Canada will still carry it. Great drama.
Amazing news! Amazing that this show is still on life support and no one wants to pull the plug. A great first season lead to a meandering second, and an abysmal third. DirecTV should stand for direct-to-video which is where this show belongs. It’s sad to see what was once a great show, limping along and going through the motions because no one wants to be the first to say good-bye.
DirecTV has become a dumping ground for shows that no one wants. One can only wonder how Ms. Close feels being trotted out to pasture on DirecTV. Would love to have been a fly on the wall to see her reaction to the news.
Damages is an amazing show, i will and can wait for the DVDs.
DirecTV is a P.O.S. that has spat in everyones faces (who is not a customer of theirs) and is getting away with it. Sony should have gone to AMC, look how well Breaking Bad has done on that network. What a damn mess.
Great News! Glenn Close is an amazing actress and this is such a great role for her. Loved season 1. Thought season 2 was just ok. Loved season 3 and many of the risks they took and guest actors.
I disagree with another users comment:
“I have a feeling the quality of the show is gonna take a nose-dive. When the show was on basic cable, potential guest stars knew people would be watching. On DirecTV, stars and agents have no clue how many people will watch, and I’m sure the producers will be forced to only issue low-ball offers.”
Damages has just been fantastic with its casting. Ted Dansen was a revelation in season one. Martin Short and Lilly Tomlin were both exceptional in season 3. I am sure DAMAGES will continue to find brilliant unexpected actors who would love the intelligent, twisty writing and acting on the show.
My only complaint is that DTV wasnt able to do the same save for VERONICA MARS.
I for one loved season 3 and now get to watch 20 episodes commercial free
