DirecTV has become the patron saint of lost TV causes, saving yet another high-quality series from untimely death. Following its deal with NBC Universal for Friday Night Lights, DirecTV has inked a pact with Sony Pictures TV for the Emmy nominated Damages taking over the ratings-challenged legal drama with an order for 20 new episodes to run over two consecutive seasons, the show’s fourth and fifth, in 2011 and 2012. But unlike the deal for FNL, in which the original network, NBC, got a second window on the series, Damages‘ new episodes will only air on DirecTV. DirecTV has also acquired the rights to Damages‘ first 3 seasons, which ran on FX. Here is the official release on the deal, which had been in the works for the past several months with Sony as the driving force:
CULVER CITY AND EL SEGUNDO, CALIF., July 19, 2010 – DIRECTV and Sony Pictures Television will team up to bring the award-winning DAMAGES, starring Glenn Close and Rose Byrne, back with brand new episodes to be produced early next year and debuting exclusively on DIRECTV. Emmy winner Glenn Close, Emmy nominee Rose Byrne and other principal cast members will return for the new episodes.
Unlike DIRECTV’s current deal for Friday Night Lights, whereby the show airs first on DIRECTV and then on NBC, the new episodes of DAMAGES will air only on DIRECTV. Additionally, DIRECTV will have the rights to air previously produced seasons 1through 3.
“We’re excited to partner with Sony Pictures Television as we breathe new life into this outstanding drama,” said Patty Ishimoto, general manager of The 101 Network and vice president of entertainment for DIRECTV. “It’s a win for our customers because only they will be able to see these new episodes and another great step forward for DIRECTV as we continue to build our growing portfolio of exclusive, award winning programming.”
“DAMAGES is simply one of the best shows on television, and we’re grateful to DIRECTV for the opportunity to produce more episodes of this groundbreaking show,” said Jamie Erlicht, president, programming and production, Sony Pictures Television. Added Zack Van Amburg, president, programming and production, Sony Pictures Television, ”We’re thrilled to have a new home for the show and our team of award-winning writers, producers and actors will not only maintain that standard of excellence, but deliver our best seasons yet,”
“FX was very proud to have developed one of the best scripted series on television, but, in order to have a future, the show needed DIRECTV and we are thrilled they stepped in,” said John Landgraf, President & General Manager, FX Networks, who also heads FX Productions. “Sony Pictures Television is a great production partner and we at FX Productions are excited for these next two seasons.”
Over its first three seasons on television, DAMAGES has featured what is arguably the most impressive cast and guest stars of any series on television – Glenn Close, Rose Byrne, Tate Donovan, Ted Danson, Željko Ivanek, Anastasia Griffith, Noah Bean, Tom Aldrege, Philip Bosco, Nichael Nouri, Peter Facinelli, Peter Reigert, Mario Van Peebles, Marcia Gay Harden, William Hurt, Timothy Olyphant, John Doman, Clarke Peters, Kevin Corrigan, Paige Turco, Tom Noonan, Garret Dillahunt, Campbell Scott, Martin Short, Lily Tomlin, Keith Carradine, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Michael Gaston, Darren Goldstein, Sarah Wynter and Reiko Aylesworth.
DAMAGES recently received five Emmy Award nominations for its critically acclaimed third season, Glenn Close for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, Rose Byrne for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, Željko Ivanek for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, Ted Danson for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series and Lily Tomlin for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series.
The series earned seven Emmy Award nominations in each of its first two seasons and Close became the first actress from a basic cable series to win the Emmy for Lead Actress in a Drama; Željko Ivanek became the first actor from a basic cable series to win the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor for a Drama Series, and DAMAGES was the first basic cable series to take home the Emmy for Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series. DAMAGES and AMC’s Mad Men were the first basic cable series to be nominated in for Outstanding Drama Series. In its first season, DAMAGES earned the most Golden Globes nominations of any series in television with Glenn Close winning for Best Actress in a TV Series – Drama.
The show was created and is executive produced by Todd A. Kessler, Glenn Kessler and Daniel Zelman. DAMAGES is produced by Sony Pictures Television in association with FX Productions.

I’m really happy about this. I know the audience at DirecTV won’t be better than at FX, but I guess Sony already knows that. All they’re trying to do is save the show.
Todd Kessler has already said during interviews they have story for 5 seasons. With this piece of news, we now know there will be exactly 5 seasons. This probably means once the contract is over, they won’t be renewing it. So audience isn’t really the issue here…
Can hardly wait to see Patty on screen again!
Something needs to be done about this DirecTV only situation! This show far exceeds most of the current programming that exists on basic cable today! I need my DAMAGES, dammit!;-) for those w/out DTV…let’s get that petition going!
Yeah, what will the rest of us do to watch it? I no longer have Durect TV, but Uverse?
This tremendous news may require a switch from Time Warner to Direct TV – at least during the Damages seasons.
I am so happy to see damages come back even if it is on direct tv which I do not have. How could FX even think of letting this outstanding show go???????? Fx did let the shield end as well. I love damages enough to have direct tv installed today. Thanks direct tv for saving damages the best show on tv and I am very disappointed in FX.
I love Damages, but very disappointed it will only air on Direct TV. Why did you do this to us FX!!
Will Direct TV sell Damages episodes on iTunes? I love the show and am unhappy I will not be able to see the new season.
Just another person who does not have direct tv. Hoping there will be a way to watch it somewhere on line I guess. Being on fx it was
repeated a few times in one week or at a different time. So not sure why the ratings were low? Isn’t there enough of us out there to do something…..
I am sad about it no longer being on fx. I love this show and have comcast.
You can watch season 1 episodes on DIRECTV.COM. Am not sure when the other episodes will become available.
Sorry, but they force you to get it illegally. You can only get certain shows or sports events on DirectTV or Dish or cable. We can’t afford one of them now, let alone all three! They just keep draining us of money, and we wonder what is wrong in the country? Everywhere you turn someone wants more money for something, websites, cell phones, t.v., movies. It is getting ridiculous. I also bring my own candy, drinks, and popcorn to the movies. Keep trying to drain me and I will find ways around it and I don’t feel badly at all! I don’t think the actors or DirectTV will suffer at all, they will just find more ways to bend us over again and again! I will just not watch it if I can’t find it for free online. I have a few contacts. I will figure it out. Crooks!!!!
I am disappointed that Damages has been sold off to the highest bidder. What F/X didn’t consider is the frequency that viewers of Damages tune in to see what else is on their station. With on demand on Comcast, I watched some of its other programs to see if I liked other shows. Now, with no Damages, I won’t bother to turn on F/X at all. One more example of short-sided American business strategy. Furthermore,I have no intention of being arm-twisted into signing up for a service provider, Direct TV, whom I have heard nothing but complaints about. I wonder how many award nominations the actors will receive if no one has seen their work? What genius made this decision?
It’s a great show. They’re firm and direct. Just like most lawyers are. I love watching them cover up a murder and a scandal. But in the end, they always get caught. I hope, Ellen ends up with someone. I heard, one of her friends from high school will be visiting her. He could be the one.
I love Damages and especially Glen Close! I hope Direct TV is smart enough to make it available week to week on Amazon On Demand like ABC does w/ Desperate Housewives and Grey’s Anatomy, any one here of this?
I am sooo disappointed, I have been waiting all year for Damages to come back on FX. Damages was,and I do say was because most people I know don’t have direct TV including myself, the Best show I have ever seen, and there are many shows I like. Damages pushed the boundries and was well written, I didn’t even answer my phone when it came on, but then again no one would call because they were also watching Damages. I don’t know how they can say they didn’t have the viewers to keep up the ratings, there wasn’t a person I know all over the US that didn’t watch it. I only hope the powers that be realize they probably had a bigger viewing audience on the FX channel then they will have on Direct tv and come back on a channel most people have so we ALL can enjoy it.
I really like damages but I left direct tv for dish when they failed to fix by dvd. Wish I knew how to get it but don’t so guess I’ll just miss it but won’t go back to direct for anything!!!
this is so easily rentable and even for free at the library…i don’t have direct tv and couldn’t care less although this is my favorite show almost ever….i’ll watch it in its totality getting the full flavor of it, like a full feature film on steroids when the DVD comes out…what fun…saw the Sopranos like this also, don’t get premium cable…won’t pay for TV…
Don’t believe it. FX made a bad decision.
Hello……Netflix!!
NOT EVERY ONE GETS DIRECT TV. I LIVE IN AN APARTMENT COMPLEX CABLE
IS ALL THAT’S ALLOWED; I’VE WATCHED DAMAGES FROM IT 1ST SHOW.
SORRY I WON’T BE ABLE TO CONTINUE TO WATCH BUT THAT’S DIRECT TV FOR U
