EXCLUSIVE: Gael Garcia Bernal, the Mexican-born star of Y Tu Mama Tambien and Amores Perros, is going far from home for his next job. He’ll star with Hani Furstenberg in The Loneliest Planet, an independently financed thriller that will be directed by Julia Loktev. Shooting begins July 26 in the Republic of Georgia. Loktev’s script was inspired by a Tom Bissell short story. A young couple backpacks through the Caucasus Mountains in the Republic of Georgia. When they hire a local guide to make through the isolated wilderness, their relationship is tested in ways they never anticipated.
Loktev directed Day Night Day Night, Bernal will next be seen starring with Kate Hudson and Kathy Bates in Earthbound, and Furstenberg is a stage and film actress in Israel. The film’s a co-production between Parts and Labor, Flying Moon and Wild Invention, and international sales are being handled by The Match Factory.

I read this script in 2005 was it? When it was called Lonely Planet. I thought it took place in the Outback. It was a great thriller. Liked it a lot.
This sounds exactly like Wolf Creek.
Yeah I’ve seen Wolf Creek. But I swear Lonely Planet took place in the Outback in the draft I read and he was this charismatic young guy psycho. Maybe they changed it cause it was too Wolf Creek even though that wasn’t a mainstream hit
This is so cool! Bernal in Georgia… just saw it on Georgian news. Kazbegi is a mountainous town in the north of the country and that’s were shooting will take place. It’s a very beautiful place.
this reads nothing like wolf creek. it’s loosely based on a short story by bissell whose not genre at all, and is significantly more haady, subtle, and contemplative then something like wolf creek. in 2005 loktev was just working off a treatment. excited to see this finally go.
Whatever I’m not making this up and I know its nothing like Wolf Creek. It was definitely in 2005 that I read the draft. Maybe someone else took a crack at it.
Hani is great. I’ve been waiting for her to pop mainstream.
Maybe it wasn’t the Outback but I thought it was. I could be inventing a memory. Anyway it was a great script that I did read and it will make a cool film with a cool cast.
Those not lucky enough to have yet seen the work of Hani Furstenberg, be it on stage, screen or tv are in for a real treat. She is a tremendously gifted young actress who plays comedy that makes you laugh till you cry and drama that holds you to the edge of your seat. I don’t know if it’s true, but I heard that she is the youngest actress ever to win an Israeli oscar. Can’t wait to see what she does in this newest project!
