The Company Men is the feature directing debut of John Wells, who not only wrote and produced, but gambled some of his E.R. money to finance the film as well. The Weinstein Company, which acquired the drama after its Sundance Film Festival debut, has just released a trailer that makes me feel like I do when I walk through a store in early summer and see the shelves lined with back-to-school supplies: the escapist summer season will soon give way to autumn message movies. When the film first played at Sundance, some buyers felt it had an episodic TV vibe, understandable given Wells’ background. I’ve heard that he has been working steadily to hone the film, which bows October 22.

It’s a good thing John Wells is used to having his product seen on TV. Being in business with the Sweinstein brothers, that’s about the only place his lil’ TV movie will play.
Buh bye Hawv.
Adam Sandler called. He wants his accent back.
Didn’t Kevin Costner read any of the reviews that said the worst part of the otherwise great Thirteen Days was his Boston accent?
This is one of the worst accents ever. How about a movie where the main character changes his accent every day, to fit in to whatever situation he is in. Then everyone around him laughs at him for being a goober. Ben’s golf swing is atrocious and does not sync up with the character’s lines. This trailer is laugh out loud ridiculous.
I recall at the time reading in the Boston papers that they had a double shoot Ben Afflecks golf scenes because he couldn’t play golf.
I’m guessing Weinstein is releasing this movie in october because ben affleck’s other movie the town comes out in september and he’s hoping that if people love the town they will want to go and see this movie too, a movie about middle class white dudes who get fired. This looks like a boring movie, a waste of my money and time.
Ugh. I guess Wells wants to do to the movies what he did to West Wing.
Okay, it does feel a little like TV, but it looks good. I’ll go see it. And side note, all of you complaining about Wells, what have you done?
predictable
I was skeptical before the trailer, but I have to admit they cut a damn good trailer. It really touches on a subject pertinent to this country right now, and it doesn’t look as depressing as it sounded. Sure, the accents may not be great – but Affleck’s acting looks better in this than in THE TOWN.
I’m certainly interested in seeing THE COMPANY MEN. Top notch actor all around – Jones, Cooper.
A movie that’s actually about something, and with no toy tie-ins. Looks good.
Vomiting in my mouth. This is how rich, set creative types with development deals imagine job loss dramas happening across the rest of America. I bet the movie ends with Affleck’s character starting his own home-renovation company and magically scoring a geyser of projects in exchange for following his bliss, etc. In real life he’d kill himself. In fact, the way things are going in this country, so much of this movie’s intended middle-class male audience will probably have offed themselves by the release date, it won’t make a dime. Women don’t care about this stuff; they all went to SEX AND THE CITY 2.
Who needs to see this movie? They gave the whole thing away with the Tommy Lee Jones scene on the dock?!
Trailers like these have spoiled countless movies over the years. They used to be 75% Act One, and 25% Act Two. Now you’re getting 20-30% Act Three, and even the “pep talk” call back?! WTF?!
well, no visual fireworks but otherwise looks pretty good to me
Predictable? Maybe. But I think it will strike a chord with the millions of Americans caught up in the current economic turmoil. It did with me and I am living that life. C’mon people, try not to be too cynical.
Can we get something straight here? It’s a speech impediment, not an accent. This manner of speaking is not a proper or correct way to pronounce words. And what is with the glut of movies about this two anyway? Only 400,000 people live in Boston. Where are all the Topeka movies? What I’m trying to say is, F Boston.
The best part of this movie is when Afleck’s character, about to get fired, meets with his boss and the boss says he can come back and work another year, but with no contractual bump — he can only come back if he works at the same level he worked the season before. It’s a very moving scene that rings of great truth and reality.
I heard great buzz about this movie while I was at Sundance this year… I’m excited to check out Wells’ first movie and to see Ben Affleck return in this and The Town
I’ve seen the movie and this trailer doesn’t do it justice. The script is somewhat predictable, but the casting was spot on and the actors did a great job. NOt a fan of Ben Affleck but the movie brought me around. It’s a very good ensemble movie, long and short of it. And yes, Costner’s accent is horrible but give the man a break. He doesn’t sound that much worse than the Car Talk brothers, and they ARE from Boston.
This looks to me like a serious film for adults. Wells has a knack for connecting with people, and I’m excited to see him take on this issue. Plus, to attract a cast of real actors like this, the script must have been impressive. Looking forward to seeing it!
I saw this one at Sundance and was quite impressed. Not a whole lot of dramas out there and this one hits close to home for many Americans (not to mention anyone out there in the world who has EVER lost a job or went looking for one). Not to mention that Deakins shot this one who is my alltime fav.
To all the negative people I would say.. unless you too have made a movie and dedicated YEARS and YEARS of your life to making it the best film possible then you can all shut your mouths. It takes a huge amount of passion, will ,and patience to make a film such a s this one, but only about 2 seconds (and just as many brain cells) to eschew it away. Dont be that ridiculous (there are enough of those people out there already) and either go see it for yourself or just quit hating. I wonder how many of you out there can actually say you have the will and drive to get a film made and out there in the world. There is a reason why LA is a bubble and many of you are just looking in. You go stay on the fringes talking s while the rest of us do our jobs.
I think the trailer looked quite good. Also, JW put his money where his mouth is by financing/writing/producing/directing this movie. As some of the comments above make clear, talking trash doesn’t cost a dime.
This notion that you must create to appreciate is asinine. As individuals we all can observe and analyze what’s in front of us, it would also mean that one could never judge food unless one has made a dish of the caliber one wants to critic, but when you look at it like that it boils down to personal preferences. Some people can’t stand cliches even if their done well and some people are just there for the faces they like, it’s all about preference, and the people voicing their preferences and qualifiers of their preferences should not be silenced because you deem their criticism unworthy, what gives you that right? You just like them should just look at as how you would enjoy the film. Why are you so vested in the film? In the end it boils down to preference whether you agree or not, no requirements are needed to critic.
