Lionsgate is hoping it has the next Paranormal Activity in this low-budget thriller about an exorcist with a crisis of conscience. The film is populated by unknowns and, once Hostel helmer Eli Roth signed on as a producer, the budget was covered through foreign pre-sales. Lionsgate later acquired it in a bidding battle. It opens August 27.

The trailer does not give any indication as to how (intentionally) funny this movie is. I saw it at the Los Angeles Film Festival (as a civilian) and it was really wild/really scary. It’s hard to imagine anyone seeing this movie and not having a good time (unless the perosn has a predisposition against horror).
I like to think that when this movie does well at the box office and gets good reviews that it will slow the tide of horror retreads, but I have my doubts. Paranormal Activity didn’t necessarily usher in a wave of new horror: It ushered in Paranormal Activity 2!
I saw this movie at LA Film Fest. it’s really good but they are showing WAY TOO MUCH OF IT IN THE TRAILER. LESS IS MORE HERE GUYS. GET WITH IT. Think Blair Witch marketing. You guys are smarter than that.
Agreed. I think that’s the most bone cracks I’ve ever heard in one trailer… ugh.
I saw the movie at the la film fest as well and…it was ok. not good, not bad, just ok. The actors, especially the lead were excellent, but the movie itself has a number of problems (let’s not talk about the ending). My guess is it will do fair at best.
Looks like a cheap “The Exorcist” rip-off on all fronts from the victim’s physical contortions to the priest’s questioning of his faith.
And by the way, Paranormal Activity and Blair Witch both sucked out loud.
Saw the film and it’s much better than this trailer. I’m surprised more people haven’t come out in support of it. They need to step up the marketing on this thing. It’s much better then you think it’ll be. It’s very funny (reminded me of “the office”) and really scary. A great mix, good cast and the director does a good job. Less you know, the better it’ll be. To counter another poster here, the ending is what takes the movie up a notch. You have to see it for yourself.
I believe Eli has a big hit here if they can correctly market it and get it to the masses like Paranormal. This though is much better, more engaging characters/storyline. Word of warning, Paranormal 2 better step it way up!
This summer has been TERRIBLE. Between this and Inception hopefully being a hit, maybe the tide will turn for original pictures. Exorcism is anything but a retread. I now look forward to future Eli Roth produced movies, so bring them on.
You don’t have to take my word for it, just check it out for yourself when it hits August 27th.
E. Roth wishes he directed this…
I can’t get over the fact how much the girl looks like Michael Cera in a wig.
