That’s domestic grosses over just 7 days’ time. Monday’s take for Warner Bros/Legendary Pictures was a surprisingly large $10.19M. Hollywood was right: Chris Nolan’s 2D pic has strong legs.

Chris Nolan is a freaking genius. Everything he is, M Night Shyamalan is not.
“Everything he is, M Night Shyamalan is not”
And somehow, inexplicably, M. Night seems to think he is everything that Nolan is, maybe more. An ego without any substance to back it up.
Screw everyone who came on here and claimed Inception was a “bomb”. You have zero credibility and zero taste. Enjoy “Step Up 3D”.
Way to put yourself on the same level as them with that comment.
Inception was great, and guess what? I’m gonna go see Step up 3D and enjoy it too. Two different movies bro…
Go back to Starbucks in your skinny jeans and sip on a latte while continuing to toil tirelessly over that script that will never be finished let alone made into anything nearly as good as Step Up 3D.
Ha! You’re actually going to see “Step Up 3D”!? I was being facetious.
Bwahahaha, seriously you’re know your going to enjoy StepUp3d before you’ve seen it? I think you’re posting on the wrong website.Try Disney channel.com or Miley Cyrus is talented.org.
Well deserved. It’s a popcorn movie, but right in the 99th percentile. Lots of big ideas, thoroughly explored. A few logic problems, but who cares really? Tonally spot on, and inventive action sequences (although the snow scenes were hard to folllow cuz everyone looked the same). I thought Ellen Page felt out of place. Not her fault — her laid-back style is out of place in this kind of melodrama. Cillian Murphy pretty good but Tom Hardy stole the movie — what a great actor he is.
I hope the studios take the right lessons away from this — the effect sequences were the least interesting parts of this movie (honorable mentions to the folding-up city and the zero-grav fights though). What kept us watching was Leo’s character.
Logic problems? You’ll just have to watch again, my guess is Nolan, in the years it took to get this made, has every frame sussed out.
the only logic problems are the way the bad guys miss (mostly on the bridge)such easy shots. But then again the whole thing was in Leo’s dream from early on (M Cain was the culprit) so his subconscious was allowing the misses…
What makes you think M Cain was the culprit?
Did you just spoil the movie? Thanks a lot.
Easy there with the spoilers.
Maybe I misunderstood but doesn’t the end of the movie leave it open-ended as to whether it was real or a dream?
Logic Problems:
“The mind always knows the genesis of an idea.” (making the inception difficult)
–> Not true. The mind does not always know the genesis of an idea. This is the whole foundation of subliminal messaging and advertising. This point was quickly brushed over in the movie, but obviously the “impossibility” of the heist was necessary for the story to continue.
Also, the dream world:
Dreams do not look like action movies. If anything, they are more like a Salvadore Dali painting. Dreams are very much symbolic, and they are often very twisted and abstract. Read up on Freud, or for more recent research read up on William Dement.
**All that being said, it was a very entertaining movie and tackled some good ideas, certainly a big feat for conquering multiple time lines and conceiving some great action sequences. Apart from the relative lack of character development – aside from Cobb – it is a fun movie. It certainly has its logic problems, but hey – what movie doesn’t? Doesn’t mean it’s bad. It’s just not perfect.
dreams dont all look like salvador dali paintings…thats maybe what yours look like…and besides, the point of the architect was to make the dream world as credible as possible…if there was some crazy dali shit happening all over the place, the mark would immediately know somethings up.
Thanks for spoiling it for me. I gave up and left before it got any deeper for me. Call me crazy, lazy or just plain old bored. This pic is a mess from the first dream to the last one I could sit through (1hr).
Tom Hardy steals every movie and every scene he is in. I’ve followed his career since Nemesis, the first movie he stole, although not hard, since that was the suckiest of Treks. He is an incredible character actor, and hopefully has put his demons to bed and can now concentrate on the career he deserves.
Hope he does great as Mad Max!!!!
The two biggest movies of the year are going to be Avatar and Inception. Time to greenlight some big fresh sci-fi movies that aren’t based on jackshit. No more Lightning Johnson and the Turbo Thiefs.
nope. two biggest movies this year: avatar and tron. no doubt.
Isn’t Avatar considered a 2009 movie? So far the top releases for 2010 are Alice in Wonderland (over $1 billion worldwide), Toy Story 3 and Iron Man 2 (each over $600 million worldwide)and Twilight: Eclipse (over $550 million worldwide). Toy Story and Eclipse are still going strong. http://boxofficemojo.com/alltime/world/
Inception has picked up a lot of steam based on word of mouth alone. Not surprising to see strong numbers now and surely through the week.
Utterly adore the pic chosen to represent Gordon-Levitt.
However it performs, Inception is the best movie of the year to date, by a wide margin.
Tee hee @ Cobra Commander. Oh Nikki!
How dare you put up a picture of the real cobra commander, Nikki? Not that I have anything against the actor, but the new G.I. Joe was like watching my childhood get raped. Shame on the people responsible. Have some pride!
Can’t wait to see Inception. It’s amazing what a filmmaker can do when his creativity is allowed to flourish. Maybe execs should take note. Their tenure lasts 18 months, these films are forever.
“now you know… and knowing is half the battle.”
Though, to be quite honest, I don’t know what half the pics up there are supposed to represent.
Give me lots more INCEPTIONs, and no more STAR TREKS.
Now you are being ornery…
As a story that works, Star Trek is far better. And this is coming from someone who hates every last piece of Star Trek anything until the most recent movie… which I wanted to hate but loved. Inception is one of those movies where you have to fill in the blanks cause there are so many holes. Liked it, but it is. Sorry.
sorry but lets defrock the Emperor…its a pretty awful pretentsious bore..one of the least entertaining flicks around with the WORST overacting…it really sucked. A Sub par Nightmare on Elm Street….;
Glad to hear someone on here talk sense.. It was alright but a little too much exposition (gee never thought I’d hear myself say that) – sort of like a good Twilight Zone ep with a big big overblown (but not terribly imaginative) budget.. and worse, Leo was dull with one expression. snooze. I was much more interested in the Gordon-Levitt and Tom Hardy characters and the movie livened up every time they showed up. But I wasn’t really moved or awed.. I just couldn’t engage..
Totally agree. There was so much Internet hype going into this one that it built a huge fan base, very emotionally attached to the idea that this could be the next great psychological thriller, etc., etc.
Anyone who tries to criticize the film in any way is bombarded with cheap insults that don’t amount to much. I’ll concede that it is an entertaining film apart from being muddled by too many time lines, and I am not surprised that it will bring in big box office numbers (which doesn’t mean it’s making a profit!).
However, the film does not have a whole lot of substance. It will not go down as one of the great films in cinema. It is an entertaining summer action sci-fi flick, and it’s understandably hot at the moment.
You didn’t understand what Nolan was trying to do. There is a reason only Leo’s character had any development as well as a very good reason why the story was filled with exposition. Watch it again and maybe you will understand it more a second time. Just because it doesn’t “substance” doesn’t mean it can’t be a good movie.
How’s that for a cheap insult?
typo extra “i” in “missing”.
Inception is totally awesome….
I love the “Cobra Commander” picture chosen for Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s spot too. Sadly, the filmmakers of G.I. Joe had no real idea of what Cobra Commander should look like… but the animated version was perfect, albeit whiny. “I wasss onccee a mannn….” Either way, thanks for making me smile with that this morning.
To put that into prespective: that’s more than Iron Man 2 made on its first Monday, despite the fact that that film’s opening weekend was over double what Inception’s was.
You slipped Cobra Commander in the for JGL
.
That’s fantastic. *laughs*
this is really a nice movie. love the plot and the graphics/animation are realistic. i watched it again and again in my laptop.
Saw the movie last night, Tuesday night, in Connecticut. And the theatre was 100 per cent full and the chatter level before the movie was ridiculously high (never heard it like that in boring CT before espcially on a weeknight). There was a definite excitement level in the air and as events unfolded when the movie got underway, people were hanging onto the edge of their seats and gasping and cheering at the highs and lows.
After it was over people were talking about it as though should the projection reel have started the movie up again from the beginning, everyone would have sat back down in there seats and watched it over again. My wife looked at me and said that if she had known this type of ‘weekend’ crowd would have been here, she would have just gone and seen it on opening weekend instead.
But it was a hell of a movie. Will definitely do well at the b.o. Well done indeed Mr. Nolan and Co.
Are you mad? Why you comparing them? Immature brat!
You God? To judge and condemn. All accusations you made are because of your prejudice not M.night’s. We are talking about inception and nolan ,no one else.
Here’s some anecdotal evidence of the film’s appeal: About half a dozen of my Facebook friends — significantly, ranging in age from teens to seniors and diverse in other ways too — have mentioned this film in recent days. I’ve never seen anything like it. This seems to be a film that people are talking about.
According to Box Office Guru, Tuesday drop on “Inception” was a mere 5% to $9.7 million.
Wholly justified. Nolan is quite simply the man. He’s become a brand now. Cannot wait for the next installment for the Batman franchise. The Avengers comes out the same year but it won’t have the frenzied anticipation of the Bat’s final chapter. If what I believe is where they’re going to take it then we could be looking at a potential threat to Avatar’s b.o. Just cast Robin Williams or Joseph Gordon Leavitt as the Riddler…please.
The business it is doing is just simply having a good product that crosses many age levels. How many films this year have been aimed at only children or teens. Leonardo Dicaprio has been around for 15 years and Michael Caine many more. Those 50+ don’t really have any movies that appeal to them but I bet they are flocking to this.
With Inception reaching 100 million domestically so far, the strong word of mouth will carry it somewhere in the 200 million dollar range for its domestic gross. That is hardly a flop or an umder performer. Add the international gross, and this movie is a solid hit. Lets hope this teaches Hollywood a lesson that no matter what is hot now, original ideas and genius creativity that challenges the audience will never go out of style.
If only Nolan’s movies had some humor I would enjoy them. Am I going to a cinema or a funeral?
