Inception dominated the weekend at #1 with a commanding 40% of the Top 5 market share. The pic also launched in these Asian markets — Taiwan, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, India, and Thailand — and is estimated to top the charts throughout the region with an estimated $6.4M on 978 screens. Next weekend Inception opens in 29 additional countries, including: France, Russia, Australia, Korea, Japan, and Mexico. Then, from July 28th to August 1st, another 13 markets come on line, including Germany.

This is an original film with an original premise. If you actually saw the film, then you know the definition of Inception in the film. “Putting an idea in someone’s head and making them think it was theirs from the beginning.” Did no one else consider that the film was Nolan’s move of Inception on the audience? The idea that intelligent, interesting, intricate, original, well made non-sequel films can still be made in this day and age.
Everything is explained in this film including the ending shots. The thing is you have to be willing to pay attention, which I know is difficult for those who want the instant payoff in this ADD and short attention span world. During the alpine sequence as the action was rolling, I was also, heaven forbid for an audience member, thinking back along through the rest of the film putting it all together about how deep they truly were and whose dream they were actually in. I did not miss what was going on in the film but multitaking my brain while it was happening.
The reasons are there. Every nuance needs to be considered, especially in Cobb’s storyline where he is the victim of an Inception himself. That’s the clue to the film. … If you need to go back and watch it a second time to pick that up, do it. The experience is richer as that is the least explained part because it is not so blatant.
As for the best films I’ve seen this year, the Swedish films “Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” and “Girl Who Played With Fire” are not as intricate as Inception but are no less amazing, as a matter of fact in some places they are superior.
I’m voting with my wallet this year and have had little to contribute to Hollywood financially. I’ve seen very few films that panned out as worth my money. “Dragon Tattoo” above is the only one I’ve seen twice but I may go see “Played With Fire” again. I judge films as to whether or not I would pay full price for them. Very few, especially this year, earn that accolade and the 3 films I’ve mentioned here earn it. See them if you haven’t, just make sure you watch “Dragon Tattoo” prior to “Played With Fire” and for the record, I read the trilogy prior to seeing the two Swedish films. They do follow the books extremely closely with about 90% accuracy.
“This is an original film with an original premise.”
Getting fucking tired of correcting people, but here goes. It’s like Reservoir Dogs/City On Fire all over again.

Inception is a masterpiece. Best movie so far this year. Nolan’s a genius. Deserved every penny.
Just getting started.
Cheers to all involved for delivering a smart, sophisticated piece of work that is also mainstream, yet never panders.
Surely a surprise to some suits out there, but people actually WANT to see original, intelligent tentpole pictures.
Really, they do.
That’s good. At least the worst-case scenario is it’ll break even.
it’s more a success for Nolan than for Dicaprio for me (because Cob is the same character than Daniels from “shutter island”)
This film has been getting a lot of buzz. And I must say after Shutter Island, he really beyond proved how amazing he is and I’m really not surprised at the opening.
The movie was pretty cool ( not nearly as cool as the matrix or batman or the big hype) watched it on I max….
if this movie makes half the international business of just “batman begins” Cris Nolan would get on track to direct the next James Bond flick; regardless of whatever concern the broccoli family my have.
Outstanding film! Kudos to Mr. Nolan and the entire cast. Special props to Mr. Zimmer on a powerful score…very much liking their collaborations.
While Leonardo does a fine job here, what I’m really hoping is that this keeps his name afloat for ‘Shutter Island’ come Oscar nomination time.
His performance in that was powerful and moving. ‘Inception’ is much more of an ensemble piece.
I agree with a previous poster., “Inception” is indeed a masterpiece. My friends and I couldn’t stop talking about it after we viewed a matinee today. There is quite a bit of effects work but somehow it feels more “organic” in this film—a very strong sense of believability unlike the CGI-ridden flicks that have a rather cartoonish quality. I’ll be seeing it again very soon at a “real” IMAX theater, not one of the retrofit theaters. For me, Chris Nolan is officially in the same league as Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorcese. These three directors can lure me to the cineplex based on their names alone. Someone stated that Leo was basically reprising his role from “Shutter Island” and I have to disagree. Though there are bound to be some similarities in playing tortured souls, his character in Scorcese’s pic was an emotional wreck—quite different from cool demeanor portrayed here. The whole cast was top notch and I was pleasantly surprised to see Tom Berenger back on the big screen. Go see it folks, it’s a blast and a major mind f**k.
It would be interesting to see what other features he would come out with now that this movie has made him very popular. I loved the movie though and would recommend everyone to watch it. When you’re done watching the film see Dark City, it is a very similar film but less of the headache. A good watch too!
How does the compound and machine in the metal case work? That is never explained. We simply need to include it as part of our suspension of disbelief.
Otherwise, I mostly agree with your comments. Preferred the Larsson trilogy to the movies and fear that somebody who hadn’t read the books but saw the movies would be pretty lost. Read the books! You will thank me later.
I was worried I would miss the whole premise in the first 20 minutes or so, but I also had to remember how much I hate getting stupid clues everywhere in other movies. This is smart, thought provoking, and close enough to the truth to give the shivers–that emotional kick we are looking for when we go theatre. I was stunned to realize how long the movie ran–over 2 hours. There’s no room for dead space in this one. I have been studying consciousness and reality for three years now, and this movie takes me over the top! Worth the money. There’s a DVD of this with my name on it.
Inception is not “Leonard diCaprio” movie. It’s really not. It’s a Christopher Nolan movie. You could insert any actor in the Cobb role and this movie would have been a hit. Leo’s involvement in this film is extremely secondary. He inserts himself into good movies by good directors and writers, but I really don’t see any growth in him as an actor. Just variations of the same celebrity persona.
Funny Jim, the same criticisms were directed towards John Wayne, Humphrey Bogart, Cary Grant, Gary Cooper, Clark Gable and other prominent actors over the years. I’m not sure I agree with your assessment of his abilities and your assertion that he simply, “inserts” himself into good movies—that’s naive. Leonardo DiCaprio has been sought out by Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Chris Nolan, Ridley Scott, Edward Zwick, Danny Boyle, Woody Allen and James Cameron to star in their films because he is a proven bankable star. You don’t maintain that “marquee value” for over a decade without real talent. Personally, I’ve seen tremendous growth in him as an actor. I just wish he’d lay off the politics and environmental wacko crap. If he is the star I generally look forward to seeing the film. Is it just luck that he starred in two of the best films this year? I doubt it.
Since this is an article about boxoffice it must be noted that INCEPTION’s per screen average is on a par with THE KARATE KID and below all other big budget films this summer.
@ Jim, ur COMPLETELY wrong on the Leo part.
i’m not a big fan of his and even argue he’s not that great- but he MADE this movie come together w/his emotional voyage. him & Marion saved it from a B level action movie.
ALL the performances were money, best of all Tom Hardy’s. I couldn’t understand Ken Wantanbe at all tho lol
IMO “inception” was TOO BIG of an idea for Nolan. Sad but true.
had this film came out b4 “Dark Knight”, it would be received WAY different. but it wasn’t.
I, for one, am damned happy to see a big budget, non-sequel targeted to adults out there and doing well critically and financially! With all the remakes & sequels & stupidity going around the last few years, Inception is a breath of fresh air – no matter a few nitpicks here and there – and everyone whining for more adult oriented films should be grateful as well. It boggles me that some critics who’ve been whining about the lack of such films finally get a better than average one – some say masterpiece – and then crap all over it. Hollywood eating itself?
Excellent, excellent film! I’m a big Matrix fan (the first movie mostly lol) so I can’t say it tops that franchise, but it is a very original idea for a fil with great acting and great visuals. Extremely detailed movie though so make sure to pay close attention.
