If I understand this correctly, Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern wears a costume for filming and it’s filled with sensors for all that digital and special effects gimmickry. But this photo for the official magazine of receptionists (which is owned by the same Time Warner parent company as Warner Bros in an obvious bit of synergy) shows Reynolds in a getup digitally painted onto his body. Lame or not?
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

Does this really matter? I mean really worth a post?
Yes. Lame. CG suits were the way of Spawn.
Lame. I don’t know if it’s the CGI or the compositing or the weird lighting mismatch between his head and his body, but the overall effect is smack in the middle of the Uncanny Valley.
The suit looks like it might be cool in motion, though. I can’t tell.
Yes, this is lame.
If Warner Bros execs and everyone working on this film have not screened DAREDEVIL they need to make sure it’s on their agenda……
now!!
Yea, totally, this movie just screams DAREDEVIL. Dusting off a minor comic book superhero that is based on a ridiculous premise, has a ridiculous costume, casting a big star on the rise and thinking people will see any superhero movie thrown at them. I think this is going to be an embarrassment for Ryan Reynolds even if the movie does okay, at least when he looks back in a few years.
I remember when we were little in the 80′s into comic books and toys, even then I thought the Green Lantern was a lame hero. When we’d be playing with our superhero toys the kid that got stuck with the Green Lantern toy was the one who got shafted that day.
Next up: a “Robin Begins” movie with Zac Efron as the boy wonder.
I always WANTED the Green Lantern. I think it’s a great story and character. Don’t know yet about the movie, and though I’m not thrilled about the design in the above pic, I don’t agree with you at all about whether or not the movie is worthwhile. I definitely think it is.
Your post shows how VERY little you know of the character or it’s current popularity.
not lame. i don’t know why you think it is.
Relatively speaking, it’s fantastic when compared to the costumes for Marvel’s Thor movie.
Cover Not Lame, Making a Green Lantern Movie, LAME
For comic book geeks like myself, Green lantern is the worst character since Ben afflecks Daredevil, with movies like THOR, Capt America and the comic movie of all comic movies THE AVENGERS on the way, Warner is stupid to put this out.
Plus the the comic geeks wanted Will Smith to play G.L ( as rumored) being the Green Lantern everyone likes is Black.
Really? Green Lantern is a top tier book at DC, an epic storyline that can easily justify a trilogy AND an animated series (that’s coming). A lot of these characters are only as good as their writers or artists (Daredevil in its prime can knock the socks off a superman book), and the features fare exactly the same way. I could care less about Iron Man, and look what Favreau and Downey, Jr. did there.
I learned long ago not to judge early photos, no matter how sanctioned they are. Even good photos lead to Spiderman 3. I want to see it in motion.
And THIS comic geek never wanted a Jon Steward (Will Smith, Common) green lantern until Hal Jordan got his due, and right now that’s Ryan Reynolds.
Dave,
You sir are a A-class moron. SHOW ME a online post where GL fans clamored for Will Smith to play John Stewart! The fans wanted Nathan Fillion and you know it. Only reasons he wasn’t in the running was that no one knew his name, he was too old and Warners would never have bet a $200+ movie franchise on a 2nd tier superhero with a star no one knows. No one cared about Brandon Routh or Christopher Reeve being Superman because it was fucking SUPERMAN!
PS – If you think THOR of all movies with Kenneth (SNORE) Branagh directing and fucking Anthony Hopkins doing his best Liam Neeson in CLASH impression is a better movie that a movie about intergalactic space police, you’re as dumb as i think you are. Go read up on your norse mythology, cuz I sure as hell won’t! I want to stay awake.
Green Lantern has been continuously published since the 1960′s in its current form. The basic characters are still loved today. The concept, the character, and the basic situation work, not the least of which is they were all laid out back when writers still had a connection to ordinary people and pulp energy.
A crummy director, bad acting, and stupid script changes can make Hamlet into the Schwarzenegger parody in Last Action Hero. Frank Miller made a lame, second rate hero (Daredevil) into one of Marvel’s faves.
Sure, the movie can stink. Brandon Routh and Bryan Singer’s Superman movie stunk, not the least of which was remaking the character into a Gay Christ parable. But Green Lantern is right there with Superman, Batman, the Flash, and Wonder Woman as a fan favorite and the DC Animated folks have shown how much one can do with the character.
@ development
I would respond but im sure you’re just another out of work wanna be waiting tables hosting Oscar parties in his upstairs apartment
I make Films.
We should probably wait until we see some actual footage, yeah?
I couldn’t disagree more with you about Green Lantern, though. Geoff Johns has completely re-energized the series and made Green Lantern one of the best reads out there. Besides, let’s not even start with John Stewart being the “popular” Lantern. He’s on the same level as Guy Gardner and Kyle Rayner.
I can’t believe I just spent part of my Friday night arguing Green Lantern…
Dave,
That is ridiculous. What has been the #1 Selling Series? The Blackest Night (Green Lantern). Green Lantern is a Top Tier character. So while this magazine cover does not look that great, don’t hate on a character that is so popular. Clearly, you do not know what you are talking about.
The Green Lanterns are a bunch of kick your door in space cops. The Lantern comics feature fast action, sprawling space settings, and extensive back story.
A Green Lantern series done right could rival Star Wars in scope. Such a trilogy would have room for half a dozen a-list actors to suit up in green. But the most fitting character to start such an epic story would be either Hal Jordan or Alan Scott, the classics.
Does this film live up to that kind of potential? I dunno. But the Green Laterns have that potential.
That’s a lot of Photoshop just to make Ryan Reynolds into Ben Stiller.
Lame.
It looks like a green, cheap version of the suits from The Cell.
Haven’t thought of that movie in a while…..uuhhhhh
I read GL back in the day (during high school) but I’m not a Comic-Con person. (I left comics behind in high school.)
But this suit looks too “digitized.” It doesn’t feel like a real suit.
Maybe a real suit would look too dorky but it didn’t seem to hurt Spiderman or Superman.
Hopefully this is just a rushed CGI thing for press.
Hardly a “controversy” (when have fanboys ever been 100% satisfied with anything?) when a costume is slightly tweaked from a static medium like comics to make allowance for how the outfit will actually look in motion on the big screen. Thus the digital makeover. I grew up reading GL in the mid 60′s, and nothing I’ve seen or read yet about this production makes me think this won’t be a home run for Martin Campbell and Warner Bros next summer.
Who cares? Next!
Semi-Lame.
“Official magazine of receptionists”? There’s the author’s not-so-hidden bias right there, taking a shot at the mag that employs Ausiello who regularly smokes her edit team.
Next!
What’s lame is asking us to believe that’s his body. And I’m an optimist.
Wow! Seth Rogen looks great! But where is Kato?
I laughed at that one!
yay. magical jewelry.
The well is empty.
His ring has nothing to do with magic at all, it’s alien technology. If you’re gonna be a critic, at least know what you’re talking about.
Love Green Lantern, Love Comics, Love Movies. Hate hate hate CG fake GL suit. Looks like a giant mood ring suit.
Well said G. My sentiments exactly. I was already expecting this film to set a new record for most CGI scenes but now having seen that suit I wish they kept it real. LAME in my book.
I think the mistake here was revealing the suit as a still image instead of in some sort of brief teaser — seeing a CGI suit in action would have been a much, much better first impression. Perhaps when it’s in motion, it doesn’t look as fake? If I recall, Gollum in LOTR was revealed first in motion, not as a still. (I may be wrong about that but I think my first impression of him was in motion…aside from the brief, in-the-shadows shots of him from Fellowship…)
Lamer than lame.
That’s Receptionist with a capital R, thank you!
Look, Ryan Reynolds is lame. There is no way any pic of him could be not lame. Stop it.
green lantern is a fantastic hero and perfectly suited for today’s special effects possibilities. Not only is the GL ring wickedly cool, it’d power is only limited to the wearer’s imagination and willpower. And not to mention, the awesomeness of the GL oath: “in brightedt day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight. Let those who worship evil’s might, beware my power…green lantern’s light!” so cool. Looking forward to the flick. That being said…not sold on the costume. We’ll see…..
“…for the official magazine of receptionists” ha, ha, ha, ha. Love Nikki Finke.
Look lame. This movie is gonna be a dud.
