If I understand this correctly, Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern wears a costume for filming and it’s filled with sensors for all that digital and special effects gimmickry. But this photo for the official magazine of receptionists (which is owned by the same Time Warner parent company as Warner Bros in an obvious bit of synergy) shows Reynolds in a getup digitally painted onto his body. Lame or not?
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

Yes it’s lame, bordering on outright disaster. From the looks of things right now Lantern is gon a have his clock cleaned next summer by Thor and Cap. They better have a great reel at Comic-Con to make up for this botch job, and I’m afraid they won’t. Geoff Johns has spent the last year promising how great this costume looks and jusy about EVERYBODY who has seen this has reacted badly. Please keep him FAR away from Batman.
The Daredevil creative team went through tons of different costumes, many were tried and discarded. Eventually they went back to the classic red leather suit.
Cap will suck. Because its being written by Joss Whedon. Who’s perfect for stuff requiring a feminist, post-modern, gay-friendly, ultra-hip and quippy pop culture movie. None of which is Captain America. Cap will end up like a really hip version of Twilight.
Yeah – I hate the way Marvel is going cheap and shitting all over my childhood dreams. Just like everyone else! I loved the comic book Cap. Now it’ll just be another dull film where nothing really happens other than a lot of product placement. Hell – we may as well call it Captain Twilight – or Captain Avatar.
They just don’t give a fuck about the fans anymore – it’s all about the money and marketing.
The worst part is that all of these films will do well, simply because most people do exactly what the marketeers tell them to do – so they’ll be lining up to watch these films, buy another i-phone, and eat another hamburger.
Even the lame Green Lantern with it’s lame completely miscast star.
It’s not lame. It’s great. I know people are buzzing about that great trailer for Social Network, but I like this tease even more. This is the best. I love it. I don’t need to see anymore. I’m in.
(Just being contrary because you were so clearly fishing for something else.)
Oh, Friday. I like a good chuckle from a rhetorical question at the end of the week. Is it…? I nearly typed out the awful “lol”.
all this shit is about to implode… there’s got to be a high water mark with Dark Knight.
I can tell this is not going to be a big hit just because of the fact that even a cover shot of the costume has clearly divided the audience in opinion. The producers of GL had promised for quite a long time that the suit would blow us all away… The response in the comments on this blog entry clearly show they have fallen short of their promise. If their interpretation of the costume is any indication of what is to come in the final film, then I think we can expect results on a par with “Superman Returns,” which also featured a less-than impressive suit…
What do I think? That’s not the GL suit. I deem it LAME.
This same “joke” was made last week, and I commented but it never got posted. It’s obviously meant to be derogatory towards the magazine, and in the process insults hard-working people in the receptionist field for no reason.
Really? I thought it was hilarious! And I held receptionist jobs during college and once as part of an internship. Not exactly what I would call “hard work”.
I think the more important question is whether or not Ryan Reynolds can play anything other than a mouthy asshole who works out seventeen hours a day. SSDD if he’s in a CGI green suit or not. Tom Cruise effect is setting in fast on this boring kid.
Nothing against Ryan Reynolds, but the photo looks like Will Ferrell.
Who cares really… but is his shoulder feeling better?… PR people needing to drum up some crap on his ‘close call’ is just too damn obvious!
Yes it’s lame. I love Green Lantern and Ryan Reynolds but the two together don’t make a good pairing. What the fuck was Campbell thinking? “O, Dr. Manhatten was cool let’s make GL look like him.”
i think it actually looks cool
anyone up for some gay disco?
wow U dont do geek Mrs. Finke, hah? I expect all the H-wood snobs here will say LAME…
I think the suit have an organic look that is pretty cool to me, and it’s possible it works very well in motion. I have to wait to see the movie in order to say if it’s good or not.
After having watched so many superheroe movies in the lastest years, i’m just happy they keep the symbol just the way it is in the comics, and the mask is right and the eyes are white… But where the hell are the white gloves and the black areas on the suit?!
Why film makers don’t read this comments?
Why Batman is all black? Why the x-men are all black? Why Superman is… all that? Don’t they hear our opinions? WE pay the tickets! c’mon!
I really don’t see what the issue is. He’s fucking HOT!!! and the picture shows off his every muscle. YAh! What is not to like. The only thing that is lame is people making an issue out of this and saying the outfit is too much. All of you only wish you had a man as hot as Ryan. I think you should all crawl back under the stupid rock from which you came. LOL
Richard Donner answered the ridiculousness of the superhero costume first, and it’s still best. Superman emerges from a building to save Lois, and the first person to see him is a PIMP. “Say Jim. That’s a BAD OUTFIT!!!!” Superman’s polite but stern response: “Excuse me.” And up in the air he goes….
The challenge for movies like these is to reach the largest possible audience, most of whom aren’t familiar with the character. I think what Martin Campbell is going for, in his big budget sci-fi imagining of this lesser known DC character – is what happens when a human encounters a technology that is ALIEN. I’m hopeful the uniform is motivated and explained within the story. It does make me curious about the rest of the CORPS, and what they will look like.
I still find it funny seeing Tobey Maguire sketch his Spider-Man suit in a book, then voila — a Spidey suit that looks like it cost a million dollars — definitely not underoos! But it doesn’t matter, because the movie worked, and the Spidey suit was loyal to the character.
My fanboy/nerd thing was the Superman Returns costume, where the S-shield was 3D. Could you hide it under a shirt? That bothered me, probably because I was fidgeting for a better Superman movie. Of course, I’m letting go the fact that he stuffs his cape down his pants!
And how many Batman movies did it take before he could turn his head to the side?
Campbell’s reboot of Bond with Casino Royale is the best Bond film in years.
He’s a good filmmaker. I’m sure he’ll deliver.
Ben posted: “I think the mistake here was revealing the suit as a still image…”
I agree Ben. Superhero costumes seem to look terrible in stills no matter how you slice it. The current Batman’s outfit looked terrible in the stills released prior to Batman Begins as well. In that case it had to do with the lighting.
I suggest folks withhold judgment on the Green Lantern suit until we see it in action.
Super Lame. Lamezilla.
What’s lame in the photo is Ryan R’s bland expression, which exemplifies what will be lame about the film. He’s effective as a softy/sweetheart kind of guy, not any superhero in my book. I predict the film will dive, based on that fact.
What’s lame is that with that mask on, he looks like Will Ferrell.
“Ron Burgundy Goes Green.”
As long as the film’s suit is sharper than the cover (note the lighting issues on the cover) I think they MIGHT be able to pull it off. I still think a full spandex suit was the safer (and sexier) way to go!
Ian wrote: ” I still think a full spandex suit was the safer (and sexier) way to go!”
Nobody–and I mean nobody–looks good in spandex.
in ascending order. Bad Actor, Good Hero, Cool suit if a tragic omen for costume makers
LAME LAME LAME LAME LAME. Hollywood doesn’t get it.
At least it’s green.
