Melina Kanakaredes Exits ‘CSI:NY’; Will Sela Ward Replace Her?
I hear it’s a done deal for Sela Ward to replace Melina Kanakaredes on CBS’ CSI:NY next season. Ward will play a new CSI joining the team of Detective Mac Taylor (Gary Sinise). CBS and producing studio CBS TV Studios moved swiftly after it became clear that Kanakaredes won’t return to the show after her contract expired at the end of season 6. There had been some minor salary issues for Kanakaredes on the show that had to do with paycheck freezes, not cuts, but I hear those had been mostly resolved and the actress ultimately left because she felt it was time to do so. Production on Season 7 of CSI:NY starts on July 28. Ward, who has won two lead actress in a drama series Emmys, one for Sisters, and one for Once and Again, was last seen on TV in a major recurring role on the second season of Fox’s House. She is with ICM and management 360.
UPDATE: CBS just issued a press release announcing Ward’s casting.
Sela Ward will join the cast of CSI: NY as an experienced investigator from Washington, D.C., whose work is driven by her empathy for the victim. Ward will make her first appearance in the season premiere when the show moves to Fridays at 9:00 PM this fall.
“We are delighted to have Sela joining CSI: NY,” said Executive Producer Pam Veasey. “With the exciting stories planned for Season 7, she’ll be a dynamic addition to the cast and the team.”
“I am thrilled to be working with Gary and this terrific group of people,” said Ward. ”I’m a huge fan.”

Sela is beautiful, an awesome actress, and so much better than Melina!! How can anyone not fall in love with her.
I think Sela Ward is an excellent replacement and is doing a great job so far.

Sela Ward has ruined the show!!!! It’s like the Sela Ward show, noone else knows anything but her. Not even Sinese gets to say much and all the other castmembers are like extras now. Get rid of her or get rid of the show and rename it Sela Ward the crime wikipedia.

I am a British gent. of ‘a certain age’ and I shall miss the beautiful Melina Kanakaredes a lot. I disagree with some views of her acting ability: she is a good professional screen actress and knows how to underplay – which is a degree of humility very pleasant to see in a woman who could so easily have strolled through her role just dazzling everyone with her remarkable physical beauty. Yet someone says she just ‘posed’ for the camera! You only had to see her alongside the more homely beauty of Anna Belknap (as Lindsay Monroe)to realise that she was never so self-obsessed as to upstage her – in fact her character was quiet and pleasant and she never tried to ‘top it’ over others. And her wonderful beauty is clearly God-given and nothing else. There are only ever a very few true beauties, in distinction to women who are just nice and pretty and charming (not that these qualities are to be despised by any means!), and Melina Kanakaredes is one of these truly beautiful women. Her beauty is as near to that of a Goddess as we are ever like to gaze upon in this existence. And the possessor of that great gift is also a person evidently of great style and – in the true sense – ‘class.’ It has been an unsurpassable experience even to gaze upon her from a distance. It really makes one feel better to know that the human race – too full of the sort of low wretches who are the raw material of the CSI franchise – has produced such a wonderful woman, allowing us to hope that perhaps evolution has been going in the right direction, after all. And please: no more vulgar comments when referring to this fine lady.

I am a British viewer and I think I think Sela Ward has made boring into an art form. She is expressionless, wooden in her acting and is ruining the show as far as I am concerned. My husband and son also agree with me.
Jayne and Philip of Britain — you are SO right. Sela is dull and cold and dragging the show down. Melina was hot, and warm, and beautiful, and interesting (I thought so). Costuming for all the women of CSI:NY is ridiculous — impractical and unprofessional, with maximum cleavage and shoulders, and hair hanging into petrie dishes. Really stupid, but not the actresses’ fault. Still, they were all fun to watch until “Jo” came along doing her SuperWoman/Nurse Ratched act. Must be able to do better, folks at CBS. Move on.

Well, I love Sela Ward and yes she is less animated than Melina and I love her too. Not sure if she fits with Gary, he is great and I always thought he and Stella were a silent thing so this should be interesting. I hear that SVU is going to need a replacement for Olivia and of course Elliot is gone so this is terrible news for SVU, maybe Melina will replace or assist Olivia and whoever replaces Elliot has major shoes to fill, can’t be done. There is only one Elliot and everyone is in love with him and his aggressive character………..
How can they get more stale? They’re terrible to begin with. I despise these horrible shows so much I run upstairs every time my wife puts them on. I can’t even listen to more than two lines before I realize how bad the writing and the acting is. They’re just plain dreadful. Dreadful.
WELL NOW I CAN WATCH CSINY BECAUSE THEY FINALLY REPLACED THE WORST ACTRESS ON CSINY MELINA. I THINK THE CHEMISTRY BETWEEN SELA AND GARY IS AMAZING BECAUSE MAC AND JOE SEEM LIKE THEY WERE PARNERS FOR YEAR.
NOW THE NEXT THING TO GO IS MAC TAYLORS NEW LOVE INTEREST WHO DOSENT CLICK LIKE MAC AND PEYTON DID ON THE SHOW. I FEEL THAT IF GARY SINESE CANT GET PEYTON BACK ON CSINY THEN MAYBE IT WOULD BE BETTER TO HAVE GARY SINESE STAY A SINGLE GUY .
