Back From the Dead: CBS’ ‘Chaos’ Is Alive!
Tom Spezialy’s CIA drama pilot Chaos completed its remarkable comeback with a midseason series order at CBS. The network and producing studio 20th Century Fox TV just closed a deal for a 13-episode order to the Brett Ratner-directed pilot. Chaos was presumed dead 3 weeks ago when CBS and 20th TV could not come to an agreement after 5 weeks of negotiations and the options on the actors were let to expire on June 30.
But in the past 3 days, the network and the studio were able to patch things up on the dealmaking front (the lunch CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler had with 20th TV chairmen Dana Walden and Gary Newman on Monday certainly helped) and to get the cast back. Closing the deals for the actors was no small feat, especially as it was accomplished in 48 hours. Coming back for the series are the pilot’s star Freddy Rodriguez and co-stars Eric Close, James Murray, Tim Blake Nelson and Carmen Ejogo. Per decision the network and studio made right after the upfront, Stephen Rea, who was also in the pilot, will be recast.
Chaos joins another comeback kid at 20th TV, drama pilot Breakout Kings, which landed a pickup at A&E after being passed on by Fox. At CBS, Chaos joins the network’s other midseason drama series, Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior.

Freddy Rodriguez is a great decent actor, I liked him in Six Feet Under.
I’m just waiting to hear someone chime in with a comment on something related to the CW like, “is there any word on whether the Betwixt pilot will be brought back from the dead?!”
Didn’t see the pilot but I did read the pilot script. It was very good, they had to work real hard to not make a good pilot.
I actually thought the script was pretty solid too and had a lot of potential for a series. Never saw the shot pilot.
But Chaos was never really dead — just in the middle of partner-share negotiations. Is Betwixt going through the same thing?
I have a question. Where the is CBS going to put this come midseason? There isn’t alot of flexibility in their schedule. They also need room for Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior.
Monday’s at 10pm is out because Hawai’i Five-O will probably get a full season
Tuesday’s are out completely
Wednesday’s at 10pm are possible if they don’t order a full season on The Defenders or if that show gets the axe.
Thursday’s are out
Friday’s at 10pm are also possible if they don’t order a full season of Blue Bloods. I can’t see them cancelling this show.
Sunday’s at 9pm might be another possibility after Undercover Boss ends it’s season.
Any thoughts?
Glad to know these are the things you think about at 2:47am
Woohoo! Great news! I’ve been dying to see the awesome Freddy Rodriguez on TV again! I agree Ethan, Freddy Rodriguez was great as Federico Diaz in Six Feet Under. He was also superb as Gio Rossi in Ugly Betty, disappointingly his character was seriously underutilized in that show.
Boy, if the drama in Chaos is anything like the drama it took to get a 13 episode order, then it’ll be a thrilling show! I can’t wait for mid-season.
So “Chaos” is picked up as a midseason series. The only thing that will likely be different is that the series will have a completely different cast.
So glad that Chaos has been picked up for mid season. I want to see Eric Close on the screen again! He was terrific in Without a Trace.
I AGREE–loved Eric in Without A Trace and have been watching all the reruns:) Looking forward to seeing him again soon.
Excellent news! So glad that CBS came to their senses and picked this series up! All I needed to read was the casting of Freddy Rodriguez and I was hooked.
I enjoyed watching Freddy Rodriguez on Ugly Betty. No doubt all his fans from that show will follow him on Chaos. We were just waiting to see him on TV again!
Yes!!!! Chaos is ON! I’ve been dying to see the upcoming Freddy Rodriguez projects. There was so much buzz about this series and I was devastated when I heard it wasn’t picked.
I’m glad to hear there are positive comments about the script. I really can’t wait for this to air.
I notice there is a NOT an African American character on the show
Just saw the first show and LOVED IT! Please, God, keep it on……
I just watched Chaos and I must say its brilliant, intriguing and very funny. I can’t wait to see the next show.
Dump chaos give me back defenders
Great I just love it lots of fun and excietment.
I am so pleased that another original and entertaining CBS show is not biting the dust before it even has a chance to build a fan base. I love the show, excellent actors, action, witty dialogue, handsome men, comedy, what more can you ask for? Please do not cancel this show…..leave that for Survivor and all those other putzy reality shows. thanks!
I hope chaos didn’t get cancelled. after only 3 episodes…really. I loved the cast and how they worked together. it was very funny. need to do more like USA and have summer show series.
I’m glad Chaos is coming back. I wasn’t sure if I’d like it after the first episode, but by the third one, I was hooked. It’s quirky but smartly written, and the main cast works well together. I just watched the last two episodes and I’m thoroughly hooked. One thing though…you need a little more diversity interacting with the main cast…just a thought…
So glad to hear that you didn’t give up on Chaos. What time slot will they occupy? Waiting anxiously.
